APPLE AND BYD’S BATTERY PARTNERSHIP
Apple began collaborating with BYD around 2017 to create a battery system using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, as reported by Bloomberg. This partnership aimed to enhance Apple’s electric vehicle (EV) goals, reflecting the company’s serious interest in developing a car.
The battery technology produced from this collaboration was specifically designed for Apple’s potential vehicle, with Apple engineers focusing on advanced battery design and thermal management. BYD brought its manufacturing expertise and innovations in LFP technology to the project.
While both companies declined to comment on the collaboration, BYD stated that its Blade battery concept was independently developed by its engineers, who hold full patent rights. Currently, the Blade battery system is used in all of BYD’s vehicles, which reportedly benefited from insights gained during the work with Apple.
The partnership’s roots date back nearly a decade when Apple sought essential technologies for its vehicle project. BYD showcased early prototypes of the Blade battery to Apple executives, who were impressed with their safety and energy storage capabilities. Apple requested changes to improve the driving range of the EV.
At that time, Apple was investigating various battery types, including nickel and alkaline, and was heavily investing in battery pack design. The goal was to create a reliable, long-range battery solution by combining the strengths of both companies.

ENGIE TO CLOSE EVBOX OPERATIONS
French energy firm Engie has revealed its intention to fully liquidate EVBox, a charging infrastructure company based in Amsterdam. Since Engie’s acquisition of EVBox in 2017, the firm has faced losses amounting to €800 million. The closure will involve shutting down operations in the Netherlands, Germany, and the United States, with only 30 of the 700 jobs expected to be preserved. Engie is in discussions with unions regarding temporary roles for about 100 employees.
EVBox has served over 20,000 business clients and was previously on track for a public market merger that ultimately did not occur in 2021.
The future of EVBox’s charging products is unclear, leaving clients without direction. Since its founding in 2010, the company has installed around 500,000 charging stations globally, including a significant truck charging corridor between Paris and Lyon, which features a 480 kW charging point. Last year, EVBox was reported to be producing modular DC fast charging stations in Libertyville, Illinois, with deliveries aligned with the Build America, Buy America initiative.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES: CARLOS TAVARES’ PERSPECTIVE
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares strongly supports electric vehicles (EVs), viewing them as essential for the automotive industry’s future and a solution to environmental challenges. He encourages a swift transition to EVs without suggesting that governments delay the process. Tavares has criticized regulations like the UK’s zero-emissions vehicle (ZEV) mandate, claiming they surpass market needs. Still, he firmly believes that the shift towards EVs is necessary.
Speaking at the Paris motor show, Tavares remarked, “We want to be on the good side of history in terms of contributing to fixing the global warming issue.” Although he previously criticized the European Union’s EV strategy as costly and ineffective, he now recognizes improvements in the regulatory framework, stating, “We are now in a regulatory framework that is clear… if this is what society wants, we can do it. We are ready.”
He concluded by emphasizing the performance benefits of EVs, highlighting their faster acceleration and improved dynamics compared to conventional vehicles.

ELECTRIC VEHICLES’ EFFECT ON AUTO EMPLOYMENT
The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) is generating discussions about its impact on jobs in the automotive sector, especially in light of the upcoming 2024 elections. Key political figures, including Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump, are emphasizing economic issues, particularly in Michigan, where the automotive industry employs approximately 392,000 individuals, representing over 7% of the state’s workforce.
Harris argues that investments in EV technology will safeguard jobs and boost U.S. competitiveness against China. Conversely, Trump contends that the move towards EVs could negatively affect workers. With limited historical data on domestic EV production, candidates are relying on political narratives to express their positions.
Recent studies, including one from the University of Michigan (UM), suggest that the job losses feared by EV critics may not occur. The research indicates that manufacturing electric vehicles could require more labor than traditional gasoline-powered cars in the early years. Engineers Omar Ahmed and Andrew Weng, who led the study, stated that “rapid widespread loss of employment at vehicle assembly plants is a smaller risk than many fear,” challenging Trump’s claims.
The UM study also points to varying job impacts within the automotive supply chain, especially in battery cell production. Research from Carnegie Mellon University and McKinsey & Company predicts that moving to an all-EV market could generate between 71,000 and 107,000 jobs in battery production, which is significantly higher than the roughly 57,000 jobs currently tied to engine manufacturing. However, a report from Argonne National Laboratory estimates that only about 31,000 new jobs may be created.

RISING EV PRICES IN EUROPE AMID FALLING BATTERY COSTS
Electric vehicle (EV) prices in Europe are climbing, despite the decrease in battery costs. The average price of an EV has grown from about €40,000 in 2020 to around €45,000 currently, representing an 11 percent rise, as reported by Transport & Environment (T&E).
This increase is mainly due to the surge in demand for premium EVs. Sales of larger models, including C-segment SUVs and above, have escalated from 28 percent of the EV market in 2020 to 64 percent in 2024. Notably, brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW have raised their EV prices by 55 percent and 50 percent, respectively. On the other hand, companies like Volvo and Stellantis have kept prices lower, reducing them by 31 percent and 4 percent.
Amid the price rise, interest in affordable EVs remains high. A study by the European Commission found that 57 percent of Europeans are keen on purchasing an electric vehicle, although price remains a significant barrier. Additionally, a YouGov survey for T&E revealed that 35 percent of potential buyers would consider an EV priced at €25,000. However, the average amount Europeans are willing to spend on an EV is around €20,000.
