Tesla Model Y Offers New Low APR

– From May 10th to May 31st, Tesla is offering a special 0.99% Annual Percentage Rate (APR) for financing a Model Y, making it a more attractive proposition for potential buyers, especially when combined with federal and state rebates.

– This financing offer is available to well-qualified buyers and applies to 36, 48, 60, and 72-month financing terms.

– The automotive industry has seen price reductions and significant incentives for several months, leading to a positive impact on sales, with leasing deals being particularly beneficial in North America for models not eligible for the $7,500 consumer rebate.

– Despite not losing its rebate eligibility, the Model Y experienced a slump in demand during the first quarter, prompting Tesla to reduce prices, offer more attractive leasing options, and provide discounts on inventory vehicles.

– The Model Y’s transaction prices have decreased significantly, making it more affordable than the average EV, which is priced at $52,000 in the U.S. as reported by Cox Automotive.

– Tesla’s competitive financing offer of 0.99% APR contrasts sharply with the average new and used car APRs in the U.S., which are approximately 6% and 8%, respectively, according to Experian.

– Comparison with Hyundai’s 0% APR offer for the Ioniq 5 and Ford’s similar promotion for the 2023 Mach-E illustrates the competitive financing options available in the EV market.

– Despite the lower upfront cost of buying a used Model Y, when considering the higher interest rates applied to used car loans, the total cost of ownership can narrow the price gap between new and used models.

– The decision between buying new or used may hinge on specific financial incentives, such as a $7,500 federal tax credit for new EVs or a $4,000 rebate for used EVs meeting certain criteria.

– The Tesla Model Y’s combination of a low purchase price after federal incentives, a generous estimated range of 320 miles (approximately 515 kilometers), and the attractive financing rate solidifies its position as a highly compelling choice for EV buyers.

Tesla Factory Expansion Protest in Berlin

– About 800 individuals engaged in a confrontation with law enforcement while attempting to gain entry into Tesla’s Gigafactory outside Berlin.

– The protest was organized by Disrupt Tesla, a group opposing the factory’s expansion due to concerns over potential environmental repercussions. The group alleges that the expansion could lead to groundwater depletion, resource theft, and a global threat to human safety.

– During the protest, footage captured scenes of demonstrators, wearing blue hats and masks to cover their faces, trying to breach the Tesla property, while police forces held them back.

– Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded questioning why “the police let the left-wing protestors off so easily.”

– Beyond addressing local environmental concerns, Disrupt Tesla aims to bring attention to the broader issue of environmental degradation associated with lithium mining—a key component in electric vehicle batteries—in countries like Argentina and Bolivia.

– Despite breaching the outer fence of the Tesla Gigafactory, the protesters were halted by police forces shortly thereafter.

– The disruption extended to a nearby airfield in Neuhardenberg, where Tesla vehicles awaiting sale are stored, and included a protest outside a Tesla dealership in Berlin by the environmental group Robin Wood.

– The activists, undeterred, planned several days of action targeting Tesla and its operations within the Brandenburg region, emphasizing their call for a comprehensive transition to sustainable mobility that favors public transportation over individual car ownership.

Fisker Faces New NHTSA Probe Over Brake Issues

– The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a preliminary inquiry into 6,813 of the 2023 Fisker Ocean SUVs due to reports of the automatic emergency braking system activating unexpectedly.

– This investigation arose from eight complaints about the braking system engaging without any clear obstacles in the path of the vehicle, causing abrupt deceleration.

– Among these reports, three incidents are linked to injuries caused by the sudden activation of the brakes.

– The NHTSA’s examination aims to determine the extent and severity of this issue, evaluating its potential impact on the safety of the vehicle occupants. Depending on their findings, the investigation could either lead to further action or be concluded without any measures taken against Fisker.

– This new probe adds to the challenges faced by Fisker, as their Ocean SUVs were already under scrutiny for separate issues, including complaints about the vehicle doors failing to open properly. In a move to address its financial difficulties, Fisker initiated insolvency proceedings for its Austrian division earlier in the week, seeking strategic options to generate the necessary funds to meet its debt obligations.

Biden’s New Tariffs on Chinese EVs and Potential Impact

– The Biden administration is rumored to be planning a significant hike in tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), potentially increasing the rate from 25% to 100%, with an additional 2.5% tariff added on top.

– This move is motivated by concerns that inexpensive Chinese EVs, exemplified by the BYD Seagull priced below $10,000 in China, could undermine the American auto industry and lead to extensive job losses.

– Despite the appeal of low-cost vehicles, the Biden administration and others argue that Chinese EVs may not meet the performance and luxury expectations of American consumers.

– Volvo’s EX30, produced in China, demonstrates a loophole in the tariff system, as tariffs can be refunded if a company also exports American-made products, allowing Volvo to potentially avoid the import tariff.

– The impending tariffs on Chinese EVs and possibly solar panels pose a dilemma for the U.S., as they could both protect domestic industries and hinder the transition to low-emission technologies.

Mercedes Mass-Produces Axial-Flux Motors for EVs

– Axial-flux electric motors, known for their compact size and high torque, are being scaled for mass production by Mercedes-Benz.

– Unlike traditional radial-flux motors, axial-flux motors are distinguished by their flat, “pancake” design, offering significant advantages in efficiency, power, and vehicle design flexibility.

– YASA has developed a motor that weighs just 12 kg (26.45 lbs) and produces 250 horsepower.  These motors not only allow for a reduction in the overall weight of an EV by approximately 200 kg (440 lbs) but also enable a more efficient use of space within the vehicle, potentially increasing range and reducing costs.

– The unique qualities of axial-flux motors have also caught the attention of luxury and high-performance car manufacturers like Lamborghini, Ferrari, and McLaren.

– Lucid and Rimac, among others, continue to develop advanced radial-flux motors, suggesting that while axial-flux technology offers significant advantages, the future of EV motors may include a variety of technologies based on application-specific requirements.
