Tesla Halts Discounts on EVs to Refocus Sales Strategy

– Tesla has ceased offering discounts on its electric vehicle (EV) inventory, affecting all models including the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X in the United States.

– This shift away from price reductions follows a period of significant price adjustments. Throughout 2022, Tesla increased vehicle prices, but in 2023, the company began systematically lowering prices, sometimes by nearly 20% on some models.

– In April of this year, price reductions included a $5,000 drop for many long-range and performance Model Y vehicles, and over $7,000 for rear-wheel drive versions.

– Despite these past price cuts helping Tesla achieve a sales record of 1.8 million vehicles sold, these strategies have simultaneously diminished profit margins.

– In the first quarter of 2024, Tesla experienced a decline in delivery numbers compared to the previous year, marking the first dip in sales in three years. This period also saw the company manufacturing more cars than it could deliver, a trend that persisted for seven of the last eight quarters.

– This cessation of discounts indicates a potential strategic pivot to stabilize or enhance production and delivery efficiencies.

NHTSA Investigates Cybertruck Following Accelerator Issue Report

– The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is probing into a reported safety concern with Tesla’s Cybertruck after a video surfaced of an owner claiming a malfunction.

– The owner, Jose Martinez from California, uploaded a video on TikTok illustrating that part of his Cybertruck’s accelerator pedal dislodged and jammed, causing the pedal to stick in the full throttle position.

– Martinez described the incident as happening while he was driving, when a cover on the accelerator pedal seemingly moved forward and got stuck.

– The NHTSA has acknowledged the issue and is currently gathering more information from Tesla to address the potential safety risk.

Archer Aviation Advances Toward FAA Certification with Successful Battery Drop Tests

– Archer Aviation, based in California, has completed critical battery pack drop tests at the National Institute for Aviation Research, gearing up for FAA certification.

– These tests are vital for validating the safety and durability of the battery packs used in Archer’s Midnight, an electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft designed for air taxi services.

– The battery packs were tested by dropping them from a height of 50 feet at different charge levels: fully charged (100%), partially charged (30%), and fully discharged (0%).

– After the drops, the battery packs continued to function correctly, affirming their robust design under severe impact conditions.

– The use of cylindrical cells in the battery packs was highlighted as a key factor contributing to the success of these tests.

– Passing these tests is crucial for achieving FAA type certification, as they are among the most demanding challenges in the certification process.

China’s Battery Production Exceeds Global EV Demand

– China’s battery manufacturing capacity currently surpasses the entire global demand for electric vehicle (EV) production.

– According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), the total global demand for battery cells, including those for EVs and energy storage, was about 950 gigawatt-hours in 2023.

– Meanwhile, China’s manufacturing capacity reached approximately 2,600 gigawatt-hours, more than doubling the global demand.

– By the end of 2025, the projected global manufacturing capacity is expected to hit 7,900 gigawatt-hours, against a demand estimate of 1,600 gigawatt-hours, assuming steady growth in EV sales and energy storage usage.

– Even half of this projected capacity would suffice to equip every new car sold worldwide next year with a 50-kWh battery.

– The surge in battery production capacity, coupled with a global oversupply of lithium, has led to falling battery prices across the board—from passenger cars to commercial vehicles and energy storage systems.

– A study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) predicts that dropping battery prices will allow EVs to reach cost parity with gasoline-powered models sooner than expected.

– Analysts from Goldman Sachs forecast a 40% reduction in battery prices, which they believe will significantly boost EV sales, regardless of subsidies.

– CATL’s stock rose by as much as 1.1% following the announcement of these financial results.

– Serving major automotive clients like Tesla, Volkswagen, and Toyota, CATL is a crucial player in China’s influence over the global electric vehicle (EV) battery market.

– Despite a cooling demand for EVs globally, CATL is committed to continuing its expansion, with strong cost management contributing to its robust financial performance.

– Joanna Chen, an analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, highlighted CATL’s effective cost controls as a key factor in its better-than-expected financial results.

– CATL Chairman Robin Zeng confirmed in a recent interview that there are no plans to decelerate the company’s growth initiatives, even with fluctuating EV demand.
