Key Tesla Executives Exit Amidst Company Layoffs

– Drew Baglino, a senior executive responsible for Tesla’s powertrain and battery technologies, has resigned from the company. His departure marks the second high-ranking executive exit within a year, following Tesla CFO Zachary Kirkhorn’s resignation in August 2023.

– Baglino was SVP of Engineering and notably active and responsive on Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, often engaging with public and technical inquiries. He was at the business 18 years, alongside co-founder and CTO JB Straubel, rising to be the lead of batteries, motors, drive units and energy. His loss is significant to Tesla’s core business.

– Rohan Patel, Tesla’s Vice President of Public Policy and Business Development, has resigned from the company also.

– Patel joined Tesla in 2017 after serving as a Special Assistant to President Obama for Intergovernmental Affairs and as a Senior Advisor for Climate and Energy.

– During his tenure at Tesla, Patel managed the company’s interactions with various government entities and regulatory bodies.

Tesla Halts Affordable NV9 Model Development

– Tesla has deferred its plans for the $25,000 electric vehicle, commonly known as the “Model 2”, contrary to previous statements by Elon Musk.

– Internally referred to as “NV9”, the project has been postponed and is currently inactive.

– Despite Elon Musk’s denial of reports claiming the project’s cancellation, internal sources confirm that funding for NV9 has been entirely withdrawn.

– The discontinuation of the NV9 project aligns with a recent wave of layoffs at Tesla, impacting many team members involved in the initiative.

– Tesla’s current focus has shifted away from the NV9 model towards the development of its Robotaxi program.

Rivian Innovates EV Charging with Reliability Grading System

– Rivian is introducing a new system that grades each charging station’s reliability, aiming to enhance route planning around charger performance.

– This grading initiative is part of the latest software update (2024.11.01) that started rolling out to Rivian vehicles such as the R1T electric pickup and the R1S electric SUV.

– Charging stations are evaluated based on data collected during each charging session, including the charger’s peak rate, payment success, and overall session success, leading to a grade ranging from A (best) to F (worst).

– Grades are visible to drivers during route planning and in the navigation and charging interfaces, helping to inform their decisions on where to charge.

– Rivian aims to direct drivers primarily to chargers with A and B grades for the most reliable charging experience.

– The grading system covers all fast-charging sites accessible to Rivian vehicles, including those within its own Rivian Adventure Network and external networks such as Tesla Superchargers, which require a Rivian-provided adapter.

– Wassym Bensaid told The Verge: ““Every time one of our vehicles interact with the charger, we have a number of data which are uploaded to the cloud and that give us a very accurate understanding of the health of the session that the vehicle is having,” he said. “So we get data related to not only the number of successful sessions, but then how many trials did you make? How was the payment? What’s the speed of interaction? What’s the overall peak performance that you have within a session? What’s the thermal derating behavior?””

–  And Tom Moloughney explained it as: For instance, if a Rivian vehicle plugged into a 350 kW Electrify America charging station at a low state of charge, and the vehicle was calling for more than 200 kW but the station only delivered 125 kW, the station would get dinged. This kind of granular information hasn’t been available to date. Additionally, if the customer requires multiple plug-ins to find a working charger, that will be factored in also.

– Rivian’s route planning tool is unique in incorporating collective charger reliability data directly into its navigation recommendations.

– The system also indicates if the vehicle’s peak charging rate surpasses the charger’s capability, enhancing user information and decision-making during charging.

Maserati Unveils Grancabrio Folgore: A High-Powered Convertible EV

– Maserati has introduced the Grancabrio Folgore, a convertible electric GT model featuring a soft roof design.

– The Grancabrio Folgore is equipped with three electric motors, replacing the twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 engine found in its combustion counterpart. One motor is mounted on the front axle, and two on the rear.

– Each motor has an output of 402 bhp, with a combined total limited to 751 bhp and 996 lb ft (1349 Nm) of torque due to the current battery discharge limit.

– The vehicle is powered by an 83 kWh usable battery, which supports a discharge rate of up to 600 kW (approximately 805 bhp). Future advancements in battery technology may increase this capability.

– The electric Grancabrio offers a range of 278 miles (447 km), comparable to the 280 miles (450 km) range of the hard-roofed Maserati Granturismo Folgore.

– Structural enhancements have been made to the Grancabrio’s sills and rear tray to ensure ride quality is maintained, with a greater emphasis on comfort over agility in this model.

– Maserati’s engineering focus for the Grancabrio Folgore has prioritized the driving comfort of a grand tourer, as stated by Davide Danesin, the engineering chief for the GT and Quattroporte product lines.

Alfa Romeo: New Model Named “Junior” After Legal Issue

– An Italian government official ruled that the name “Milano,” initially chosen for Alfa Romeo’s new compact sports car, cannot be used due to legal restrictions.

– Stellantis wrote today: During one of the most important weeks for Alfa Romeo’s future, an Italian government official declared that the use of the name “Milano” – chosen by the Brand for its recently unveiled new compact sports car – is banned by law. The name “Milano,” a public favorite, was chosen to pay tribute to the city where our history all began in 1910. This was not the first time that Alfa Romeo has asked the public’s opinion when choosing the name of a car. It was previously done in 1966 with the Spider 1600 when the name chosen by the public was Duetto. Despite Alfa Romeo believing that the name met all legal requirements and that there are issues much more important than the name of a new car, Alfa Romeo has decided to change it from “Milano” to “Alfa Romeo Junior” in the spirit of promoting mutual understanding. The Alfa Romeo team would like to thank the public for the positive feedback, the Italian dealer network for their support, journalists for the enormous media attention given to the new car, and the government for the free publicity brought on by this debate.  With a unique story and an endless list of names to choose from, the name change was not an issue. Indeed, it was a pleasure to go over the list of names selected as favorites from the public’s suggestions, one of which was “Alfa Romeo Junior.”

2025 eSprinter Update: More Models, Lower Cost

– The 2025 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, originally launched with a 113.0-kWh battery and a 170-inch wheelbase, now includes a new 81.0-kWh battery option.

– This new battery choice is available in two body styles: the existing high-roof, big-box version, and a newly introduced standard-roof model that’s 11.4 inches (approximately 29 cm) lower, with a 144-inch wheelbase and 40 inches (about 102 cm) shorter in length.

– The introduction of the 81.0-kWh battery reduces the eSprinter’s starting price significantly. Both battery sizes power a rear-mounted electric motor, which comes in two power options: standard 134 hp or an optional 201 hp.

– Range estimates for the 113.0-kWh model are 297 miles on the European WLTP cycle. The 81.0-kWh battery achieves 190 WLTP miles in the same body style and 204 WLTP miles in the smaller body variant.

– Mercedes-Benz notes that the eSprinter’s battery capacity is suitable for daily delivery routes, which typically do not exceed 150 miles. The entry price for the eSprinter with the smaller battery is now $63,545, a reduction of about $10,000. The price for the larger battery model begins at $75,855.
