Tesla Expands Model Y Lineup with New Large Battery RWD Variant

– Tesla has introduced a new rear-wheel drive version of the Model Y with a larger battery, now offering four Model Y variants in select European markets.

– The new Model Y variant features a long-range battery capable of up to 600 kilometers (373 miles) on a single charge, using the 2170 round cell battery from its all-wheel drive counterparts.

– This “Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive” version is currently available in Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Greece, Spain, Germany, and Norway, among others.

– France, the Netherlands, and the UK are notable exclusions where this new Model Y variant is not yet available.

– The existing “Rear-Wheel Drive” base model of the Model Y uses an LFP battery and offers a range of up to 455 kilometers (283 miles).

– The “Long Range All-Wheel Drive” version of the Model Y accelerates faster (0 to 100 kph in 5.0 seconds) compared to the new RWD version (5.9 seconds), but has a shorter range of 533 kilometers (331 miles).

– The top tier “Performance All-Wheel Drive” continues to offer enhanced specifications for speed and performance.

– In Germany, the new rear-wheel drive variant is priced approximately 6,000 euros cheaper than the all-wheel drive version.

Tesla at a Crossroads: Analyst Gives Musk Two Weeks to Address Concerns

– Dan Ives of Wedbush, a longstanding advocate for Tesla, sets a 12-month price target of $300 for Tesla’s stock, which is currently just below $175.

– At the upcoming April 23 earnings call, Elon Musk must effectively communicate his strategy to revive Tesla’s growth amidst a severe demand downturn, which Ives describes as a “Category 5 demand storm.”

– Essential to Tesla’s recovery strategy, according to Ives, is the introduction of a more affordable car model and the successful launch of robotaxis, which Musk plans to reveal on August 8.

Ives wrote a note on Thursday which said: ““A key part of the future growth story for Tesla is the Model 2 vehicle and sub $30k price point to drive mass demand globally in this EV landscape. We estimate that around 60% of future growth the next few years will come from Model 2 which was set to hit the roads by late 2025 or early 2026.”

– Increased competition in China and a global dip in EV demand are pressing concerns. Musk’s focus on developing AI technologies outside of Tesla and his legal issues over compensation in Delaware are also causing investor unease.

– Ives stresses that Elon Musk is at a critical juncture, needing to steer Tesla through these challenges to prevent further deterioration of investor confidence.

Tesla’s Swedish Strikes Continue Despite Musk’s Optimistic Remarks

– Elon Musk, in a live broadcast on X, suggested that the difficulties surrounding Tesla’s operations in Sweden have been largely resolved, stating, “Things are in reasonably good shape in Sweden” and “the storm has passed on that front.”

– Contrary to Musk’s assertions, Jesper Pettersson from the IF Metall union emphasized that the strike action against Tesla in Sweden is “very much ongoing.”

– Pettersson revealed that the union is contemplating an escalation of their actions, which originally started in late October.

– He also commented on Tesla’s portrayal of the situation, suggesting that the company’s implication that operations are normal is misleading.

EU Reports Reveal Overestimated Vehicle Fuel Economies

– Recent findings by the European Union have sparked concerns similar to the Dieselgate scandal, focusing on the discrepancies in real-world fuel economy versus laboratory results.

– Two influential studies, including one from the European Commission, predict impactful changes in the auto industry by 2026, possibly altering the range of vehicles available to consumers.

– Investigations reveal that the current testing methods under the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) significantly overestimate fuel efficiency. Petrol vehicles show a 23.7% overestimation, while diesel vehicles are overestimated by 18.1%.

– The real-world fuel consumption data for cars registered in 2022 highlights notable inaccuracies in lab testing compared to actual performance, with plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles not meeting expected standards.

– Enhanced scrutiny from European authorities is anticipated for PHEVs and other underperforming vehicles in light of these findings.

GAC Set to Launch Solid-State Battery EVs with 1,000+ km Range in 2026

– GAC has announced plans to deploy its solid-state battery technology in Hyper-branded electric vehicles by 2026, promising a driving range exceeding 1,000 kilometers.

– The solid-state batteries feature an energy density of over 400 Wh/kg, significantly enhancing the potential range of EVs.

– These batteries incorporate a third-generation sponge silicon negative electrode alongside a high-capacity solid-state positive electrode, facilitating this high energy density.

– Compared to traditional liquid lithium-ion batteries, GAC’s solid-state version boasts a mass energy density increase of over 50% and a volumetric energy density increase of more than 52%.

– Developing these batteries has been likened to “climbing Mount Everest,” highlighting the extensive challenges in materials, design, manufacturing, and integration.

– The batteries are characterized by a 100% solid-state electrolyte, providing ultra-high energy density, enhanced safety features, and a broad operational temperature range.

– Transition from laboratory to mass production of these batteries has already been achieved, setting the stage for their integration into production vehicles.

Voltpost Unveils Curbside EV Charging via Lampposts

– New York City-based startup Voltpost has developed a system to retrofit existing street lampposts for electric vehicle (EV) charging.

– The newly launched lamppost charger wraps around the lower part of a lamppost, incorporating necessary electronics and cables to charge two to four EVs simultaneously at Level 2 speeds.

– While not offering fast charging, the setup is ideal for overnight charging, providing sufficient power to top off EV batteries.

– The charger unit is positioned at hand-level for easy access, featuring a retractable cable system with an anchor positioned eight feet high to avoid cable clutter on the sidewalk.

– Voltpost’s product design is modular, allowing for simpler maintenance and future upgrades.

– Charge station operators can utilize Voltpost’s custom software to adjust pricing models and monitor the chargers remotely.

– Installation of the Voltpost charger is efficient, demonstrated by a one-hour setup time during trials with the New York City Department of Transportation.
