Mercedes-Benz EQS Boosts Range and Updates Design

– The Mercedes-Benz EQS electric saloon now features an additional 51 miles of range, totalling 511 miles, and introduces a new front-end design that resembles the brand’s iconic radiator grille.

– This update places the EQS in direct competition with the BMW i7, enhancing it with luxury interior options, advanced driver assistance systems, and standardizing the MBUX hyperscreen across the model. Similar enhancements are being made to the EQE saloon, EQE SUV, and EQS SUV, which all utilize the EVA2 electric platform.

– According to Holger Enzmann, the platform’s chief project manager, these improvements are considered an “upgrade before the update” rather than a comprehensive mid-life facelift. A notable design element is the new front panel option that features chrome plating, vertical slats, and a bonnet-mounted Mercedes star, echoing the aesthetic of the combustion-engined S-Class.

– The EQS’s range boost is achieved by upgrading to a 118kWh battery pack from the previous 108.4kWh version, incorporating improved cells and battery chemistry. To further extend range, a heat pump has been added as standard equipment, all-wheel-drive models have gained the ability to disconnect the front motor when not in use, and energy recuperation effectiveness has been doubled.

– With decreased reliance on brake discs due to advanced recuperation techniques, Mercedes has also introduced a maintenance feature to periodically engage the brakes to ensure their longevity.

– For those willing to invest more, the Pinnacle trim alongside the Executive Interior package introduces a rear seat with up to 38 degrees of recline and the option to fold the front passenger seat forward for added leg space.

C-Class EV: A Blend of EQS Luxury and Model 3 Simplicity?

– The upcoming Mercedes C-Class EV has been spotted by spy photographers.

– Interior spy shots reveal a dashboard dominated by screen displays, suggesting a more affordable take on the MBUX Hyperscreen that spans the cabin’s width. The interior design hints at shared components with the CLA EV, as indicated by similar screen setups seen in previous spy photos.

– Key interior features include a three-spoke steering wheel, slender air vents, and an in-cabin camera, emphasizing a minimalist design approach with limited physical controls.

Mercedes-Benz Q1 2024 Sales Overview

– Mercedes-Benz Group reported sales of 568,400 vehicles, marking a 6% decrease in the first quarter of 2024.

– Plug-in hybrid vehicle sales rose by 6% during this period. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales stood at 47,500 units, showing an 8% decline, partly due to the smart fortwo model concluding its lifecycle with a 30% drop in sales.

– Electric vehicles constituted 10% of Mercedes-Benz Cars’ total sales for the quarter, which increases to 19% when including plug-in hybrids.

– Mercedes-Benz plans to launch twelve high-end vehicles in 2024, featuring eight Mercedes-AMG models and the debut of the electric G model. In Germany, the brand maintained its lead in the premium segment for Q1, despite a reduction in BEV demand after the sudden cessation of a tax benefit.

2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT First Drives

– The 2025 Porsche Taycan Turbo GT four-door sedan eliminates the rear seats, adding a carbon-fiber storage bin to reduce weight by 49 pounds (approximately 22.23 kg).

– Additional weight-saving measures include removing the driver’s-side charging port and its wiring, using thinner windshield glass, eliminating rear speakers, and discarding floor mats.

– The optional Weissach package further enhances the car by adding a large fixed rear wing, front and rear splitters, and underbody modifications, resulting in 175 pounds (about 79.38 kg) of front and 310 pounds (about 140.61 kg) of rear downforce. This package also includes high-performance Pirelli P Zero Trofeo RS Elect tires.

– The Weissach package-equipped Turbo GT is notably lighter, weighing 165 pounds (approximately 74.84 kg) less than the standard Turbo GT and 157 pounds (approximately 71.21 kg) less than the Taycan Turbo S.

– Porsche Active Ride, the active damper system available in the updated 2025 Taycan lineup, comes standard on the Turbo GT.

– The Turbo GT features a two-motor powertrain upgraded with a 900-amp rear inverter for the rear motor, increasing the peak power output to 1092 horsepower for brief two-second spurts, and maintaining 1019 horsepower for 10-second intervals.

– This enhanced powertrain allowed the Turbo GT to significantly outperform competitors and previous models in time trials, clocking in nearly 18 seconds faster than a leading competitor and 26 seconds quicker than the Taycan Turbo S.

– A notable feature is the Turbo GT’s increased top speed of 180 mph (289.68 km/h), which can reach up to 190 mph (305.78 km/h) with the Weissach package, contributing to its superior performance in high-speed sections.

– During its record-setting lap, the Turbo GT’s battery temperature started at 57 degrees Fahrenheit (13.89 degrees Celsius) and climbed to 144 degrees Fahrenheit (62.22 degrees Celsius), closely approaching the critical temperature threshold of 149 degrees Fahrenheit (65 degrees Celsius).

battery recycling capacity than the supply of end-of-life batteries.

– Recycling facilities are anticipated to have the capacity to process 1.3 million EV battery packs annually by 2030.

– However, only about 341,000 end-of-life EV battery packs are expected to be available each year by that time.
