Quarter of Europe’s EVs to be China-Made in 2024

– In 2023, 19.5% of electric vehicles (EVs) sold in Europe were manufactured in China, with projections set to increase to 25% by 2024.

– Transport & Environment (T&E) analysis suggests the EU is considering import tariffs to offset subsidies for China’s EV industry, aiming to encourage local EV manufacturing and investment in the European battery supply chain.

– Despite current imports mainly being Tesla, Dacia, and BMW models produced in China, T&E forecasts Chinese brands might capture 11% of Europe’s EV market in 2024 and 20% by 2027, with BYD aiming for 5% by 2025.

– Implementing tariffs could push automakers to localize EV production within Europe but might not protect legacy manufacturers indefinitely as Chinese firms plan to establish factories in Europe.

– A proposed EU tariff increase to 25% on all vehicle imports from China could result in higher prices for medium-sized sedans and SUVs compared to their European counterparts.

– The cost advantage of Chinese-made lithium-ion batteries, being at least 20% cheaper and technologically more advanced than European ones, poses a risk to European investments in the battery sector.

BMW and Mercedes Set to Achieve UK EV Targets

– The UK’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate necessitates that electric or fuel cell vehicle sales constitute 22% of total vehicle registrations to avoid fines.

– Automakers failing to meet this target will incur fines of £15,000 (approximately $19,000) per vehicle.

– A flexibility provision permits brands predominantly selling combustion engine cars to purchase credits from electric-only manufacturers.

– The borrowing rule of the program allows for a temporary 5.5% battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales share, provided there’s an overachievement in subsequent years.

– BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and China’s MG are on course to meet the 22% electric vehicle sales target.

– Toyota’s full-electric bZ4X model has surged to represent 18% of the company’s sales after two months, a significant increase from a 0.5% share in 2023.

Majority of EV Charging Predicted to Be Level 1 & 2 by 2030

– The National Renewable Energy Laboratory forecasts that Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging will comprise 80% of all electric vehicle charging by 2030.

– An anticipated 33 million EVs will be on the road by 2030, necessitating substantial electric grid energy to accommodate charging needs.

– Around 64% of EV charging is expected to occur at single-family homes, utilizing Level 1 and Level 2 chargers due to their cost efficiency and convenience.

– DC fast charging stations are projected to fulfill 20% of the EV charging requirements.

– Granholm addressed concerns over Chinese investment in U.S. projects, stressing the importance of American leadership and ownership for companies seeking federal investment.

– Recent EPA emissions standards were discussed, mandating automakers to sell more efficient vehicles and electric vehicles (EVs), adjusting from initial fuel economy proposals.

– Sales of electric vehicles have seen significant growth, with 1.4 million units sold last year, marking a 50% increase from the previous year, and projections indicating sales of approximately 1.8 million EVs this year.
