Accelerating the Future: The Race for Fast-Charging EV Batteries

– South Korea’s top battery manufacturers are intensifying efforts to reduce electric vehicle (EV) charging times, a critical factor deterring consumers from transitioning to EVs.

– The adoption of EVs is seen as unlikely without the ability to recharge them as swiftly as refueling traditional combustion engine vehicles.

– Automakers are also leaning towards sourcing batteries that offer rapid charging capabilities due to sluggish EV sales.

– Samsung SDI Co., ranked as the seventh-largest EV battery producer globally, announced plans to mass-produce batteries by 2026. These batteries will boast a range of 600 kilometers (373 miles) with the capability of being charged to 80% in just nine minutes.

– Research commissioned by Samsung Group highlighted that charging speed is a principal concern for EV customers across major markets such as China, the US, and South Korea.

– Samsung SDI anticipates a future demand for batteries that can be charged in five minutes to cover distances up to 300 km.

– SK On, the world’s fifth-largest battery maker, showcased a battery capable of charging for 600 km within 15 minutes at a recent industry event in Seoul.

– By 2030, SK On plans to produce batteries that can be charged to travel 300 km in five minutes, a timeline four years later than Samsung SDI’s goal. This timeline is considered realistic by SK On due to the expected pace of fast-charging infrastructure development.

Apple and Tesla Lose Ground in China to Local Brands

– Apple has seen its market share in the premium smartphone segment decline to Huawei, particularly after the latter introduced the Mate 60 Pro with a domestic processor in August.

– There’s an ongoing push within Chinese state agencies to replace Apple iPhones with local brands, a move that began intensifying last summer.

– Government workers and educators were encouraged to switch to Huawei phones, sometimes with incentives like a 20% discount, to promote domestic technology firms.

– Patriotism among Chinese consumers has also fueled the shift from international brands like Apple to local ones such as Huawei.

– Apple’s smartphone sales in China dropped 24% in the early weeks of the year, while Huawei’s sales surged by 64%.

– Apple has resorted to price cuts and promotions to try and bolster sales in the face of increasing competition from local brands.

– Tesla, facing similar challenges, has offered significant discounts on its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China to sustain sales.

– Tesla’s share of China’s new energy vehicle market decreased to 6.6% in the first two months of the year, down from 7.9% in the corresponding period the previous year.
