Update: Tesla’s German Factory Hit by Arson, Closed Until March 17th

– The “Volcano Group” claimed responsibility for an arson attack on Tesla’s German factory in Grünheide, causing the facility to lose electricity and potentially nearly $1 billion in damages, and a potential closure until 17th March.  The attack impacted over 60,000 residents in Brandenburg and parts of Berlin due to the destruction of a high-voltage power mast.

– Andre Thierig, the plant’s senior director, estimated Tesla’s economic loss from halted production and recovery efforts in the high hundreds of millions of euros, with a daily production shortfall of about 1,000 vehicles. Emergency power solutions were ineffective due to the disconnection between the power mast and the local substation, resulting in the shutdown of the plant’s ventilation systems and the evacuation of all 12,500 employees.

– Repair efforts for the damaged infrastructure could extend over several days, according to local grid operators. E.DIS, an E.ON subsidiary responsible for the electrical grid, is attempting a temporary solution to restore power to Tesla and other affected areas, though no specific timeline for resolution was provided.

– Baird Equity Research predicts a substantial decrease in Tesla’s Q1 deliveries due to the arson attack

NxuOne™ Achieves Breakthrough with Tesla Cybertruck’s Charging

– NxuOne™ has become the first third-party charging system to fully leverage Tesla Cybertruck’s 800V architecture, and achieved a charging rate of 327kW, surpassing the Tesla Cybertruck’s previous maximum rates. This rate exceeds the known maximum of 253kW at a Tesla Supercharger, as reported by Out of Spec Reviews.

– Tesla’s Cybertruck, designed with an 800-volt architecture, was previously constrained to 250KW at 400 volts due to Tesla’s V3 supercharger limitations. To accommodate V3 superchargers, Tesla has been splitting the Cybertruck’s 800-volt battery into two 400-volt packs. Tesla’s head of vehicle engineering confirmed that with V4 superchargers, Cybertruck could reach peak charging speeds of 350KW.

– Third-party companies, utilizing Tesla’s J3400 connectors, can develop chargers that capitalize on the 800-volt technology.  Whilst was the news was welcome by Cybertruck fans, some of them breathlessly, perhaps take a breath to look at the charge curve supplied. It’s an odd one because the power and current are plotted on the same axis and the SOC is not displayed on the x axis as most other charge curge would be.  But it looks like 800volts really only helps up to 10 or 15%.

–           800v architectures are not a panacea for EV charging. There are benefits such as cabling and and thermal efficiencies, but when the limitation is clearly the truck, or should I say the 4680 cells here, that’s the constraint. As Tesla like to do, there’s a short burst of high peak power and that helps get the headlines, but soon the power is reduced to the equivavlent of a V3 Supercharger. This 800v charger could save 1-2 minutes for a typical charge.

Model 3 Ludicrous Edition Set for May Launch

– Tesla engineers from the Fremont factory recently visited China to address and resolve any remaining issues with the Model 3 Ludicrous, hinting at final preparations for launch.

– The car, which has been under tests in California, sports unique disguises like capes on its front and rear to mask its identity, indicating advanced testing stages.  Key improvements for the Model 3 Ludicrous include the integration of a new dual-motor system aimed at enhancing performance, suggesting it will exceed the Model 3 Performance’s acceleration of 0-60 mph in 3.1 seconds.

– The rollout of the Model 3 Ludicrous is scheduled for May, with a coordinated introduction planned for both the U.S. and China markets.

Mercedes-Benz and BMW to Boost EV Charging Network in China

– Mercedes-Benz and BMW have joined forces to launch a supercharging network in China. Their plan includes constructing over 1,000 supercharging stations by the end of 2026, with a broader goal of establishing around 7,000 stations across the nation.

– The initial phase of this project will see charging stations operational in major new energy vehicle cities in China starting in 2024, eventually extending to smaller towns and regions.  In 2023, BMW’s pure electric vehicle sales in China surpassed 40,000 units.

– The BMW Supercharging Station initiative, kicked off in August 2023, introduces high-power charging solutions with capacities up to 600 kilowatts. To date, 54 charging stations have been deployed across 17 key cities in China, accessible to electric vehicles from all manufacturers.

Budget Disappoints EV Sector with Missing Incentives

– The recent UK Budget announcement did not fulfill the automotive industry’s expectations for a 50% VAT reduction on electric vehicles (EVs).

– It also overlooked extending the Plug-in Van Grant, set to expire on March 31, 2025, causing concern for fleet operators over potential order disruptions. Although a 5p per litre fuel duty reduction was extended for another year, this move was largely anticipated.

– The Budget failed to address the VAT rate disparity between public charging (20%) and home charging (5%), missing an opportunity to ease financial pressures on drivers without home charging access and fleet operators.

Stuttgart Airport Welcomes Electric Refueling Vehicle by Mercedes-Benz

– Stuttgart Airport has introduced an all-electric refueling truck, the Mercedes-Benz eEconic, for aircraft servicing, developed in collaboration with tank body specialist Esterer.

– This vehicle, part of the finalize! project with Skytanking as the service provider, features a 40,000-liter electrically operated refueling system powered directly from its batteries. Marking a first, it’s based on a Daimler Truck electric series production model and stands as Stuttgart Airport’s inaugural fully electric refueling vehicle of its kind.  The eEconic’s electric drive minimizes noise and heat output while producing no CO2 or particulate emissions, enhancing the working environment for nearby personnel.

– Its innovative design allows both the vehicle and its refueling pump to operate on a single charge, highlighting an efficient energy use strategy. This initiative represents a significant step towards electrifying the ground handling fleet for Skytanking.
