Polestar 3 Kickstarts Global Production

– Polestar 3 manufacturing commenced in Chengdu, China, with plans to extend production to South Carolina, USA, by mid-2024.

– Successful completion of the initial production test series at the U.S. facility marks a significant step forward.

– This model will be Polestar’s first to be manufactured across two continents, aligning with the brand’s expansion goals in North America, Europe, and Asia.

Renault Scenic E-Tech Crowned 2024 European Car of the Year

– The Renault Scenic E-Tech, an all-electric vehicle, won the Car of the Year 2024 award at the Geneva Motor Show.

– It competed against six other finalists: BMW 5 Series, BYD Seal, Kia EV9, Peugeot E-3008/3008, Toyota C-HR, and Volvo EX30.

– This marks the first time a Chinese-made car, the BYD Seal, was shortlisted for this prestigious award.

– The award was determined by a panel of 59 automotive journalists from 22 different countries.

– The World Car of the Year 2024 finalists, announced at the same event, include the Kia EV9, Volvo EX30, and BYD Seal, with winners to be revealed on March 27 at the New York International Auto Show.

NJ to Phase Out EV Sales Tax Waiver

– New Jersey plans to gradually eliminate the sales tax exemption for new and used electric vehicle (EV) purchases over the next three years, as stated by state officials during Governor Phil Murphy’s budget address.

– The state had previously declared that all new car sales must be electric by 2035, with the policy starting to take effect at the end of 2026.

– Since 2004, New Jersey residents have enjoyed a 6.625% sales tax exemption on the purchase, lease, and rental of new or used fully electric vehicles under the zero-emission light duty vehicle tax break, excluding plug-in hybrids.

– The ChargeUp program, offering up to $4,000 in rebates for New Jersey residents buying an EV, will persist, though the exact funding for this year remains unspecified. The program has received about $30 million in the past three fiscal years.

MG Updates Lineup with New Estate Model, Replacing MG 5

– MG is introducing an estate version of the MG 4 EV hatchback later this year, aimed at replacing the older MG 5 SW EV.

– The outgoing MG 5, introduced to the UK market in 2020, is based on the Roewe i5 from 2017, indicating it’s time for an update.

– The forthcoming estate will utilize MG’s new EV-specific Modular Scalable Platform, enhancing performance and switching the drivetrain from front to rear-driven.

– This update is part of MG’s broader strategy to refresh its electric vehicle range, including new versions of the ZS EV and a redesigned HS model.

– The lineup will also feature a new MG 3 supermini and the second-generation Marvel-R SUV, both set to be introduced to the UK market.

Schaeffler Invests $230M in Ohio EV Axle Factory

– Schaeffler, a German automotive parts supplier, announces a $230 million investment for a new factory in Dover, Ohio, dedicated to electric vehicle (EV) component manufacturing.

– The new facility will focus on producing electric axles for light- and medium-duty electric vehicles.

– Located approximately 80 miles south of Cleveland, construction of the plant is set to begin mid-year, aiming for completion of its first phase (130,000 square feet) by the third quarter of 2025.

– Schaeffler is exploring potential incentives for the new plant under the Inflation Reduction Act, which promotes EV assembly and component manufacturing in North America.

– Additionally, Schaeffler recently finished expanding its Wooster, Ohio, factory by 90,000 square feet, where it already manufactures electric motors and EV powertrain components.

FreeWire Launches Pro Series Chargers with Bidirectional Power

– FreeWire’s Boost Power Pro chargers offer bidirectional power flow, enabling them to supply electricity back to the business premises.

– The Pro Series can function as a large-scale energy storage system by sharing storage capabilities across multiple stalls.

– Unlike non-Pro models, these chargers provide DC fast charging at rates up to 200 kilowatts and accept a low-power input.

– The Boost Power Pro features two charging cables: one with a CCS1 plug and another with a NACS connector.

– Each unit is equipped with a 150-kilowatt-hour integrated battery pack, with grid connection options configurable up to 53 kW.

– The Pro Series can contribute power back to the grid through FreeWire’s software, offering a potential revenue stream for businesses during peak energy periods.

– Batteries within the chargers can be charged during low-cost energy periods and exported back to the grid when prices are higher.

Honda Unveils CR-V e:FCEV with Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Tech

– Honda introduces the 2025 CR-V e:FCEV, an electrified version with a 29-mile battery range, followed by hydrogen fuel-cell propulsion for extended travel.

– The vehicle features a 17.7 kWh battery pack, enabling electric-only driving before switching to hydrogen fuel-cell power for an additional 241 miles.

– The CR-V e:FCEV’s hydrogen fuel-cell system distinguishes it from conventional hybrids, offering a total range of 270 miles without relying on gasoline.

– Currently, the U.S. has 52 public hydrogen fueling stations, all in California, concentrating mainly around San Francisco and Los Angeles.

– This model will be the only fuel-cell passenger vehicle manufactured in the U.S., specifically in Ohio, utilizing a fuel-cell module developed jointly with GM.

Toyota Slashes Mirai Price with Hefty Rebates in California

– Toyota has introduced a $40,000 rebate on the Mirai hydrogen car in California, reducing its price from $67,095 to $27,095.

– This discount, which accounts for 60% of the Mirai’s list price, is coupled with zero-percent financing and a $15,000 hydrogen fuel card.

– Rising hydrogen fuel costs in California, reaching up to $36 per kilogram, have led to a significant decline in consumer interest, with Mirai sales dropping 80% in Q4.

– In Japan, the demand for hydrogen vehicles has also plummeted, with sales dropping 83% over two years to just 422 units in 2023.

BYD Marks European Entry with Massive Vehicle Shipment

– BYD’s inaugural cargo ship, the Explorer No.1, docks in Germany, delivering around 3,000 vehicles.

– The Explorer No.1, a “Ro-Ro” ship, is 653 ft long with a capacity of 7,000 vehicles, showcasing BYD’s significant export capabilities.

– Owned by Zodiac Maritime and leased by BYD, this vessel is the first out of eight planned for vehicle exports and the first ship built by a Chinese shipyard specifically for vehicle exportation.

– The ship’s arrival in Bremerhaven, Germany, signifies a significant step in BYD’s strategy to broaden its market reach outside China.

– BYD, having produced over 3 million cars in China and sold around 240,000 internationally, aims to use its new fleet to boost exports further.

– At the Geneva Motor Show, BYD introduced the Yangwang U8, an off-road SUV, underlining its ambition to compete in the global auto market.

Hyundai Accelerates EV Production at New Georgia Facility

– Hyundai has advanced its production timeline for the new Georgia Metaplant, now set to begin EV manufacturing in Q4 of this year, earlier than the initial 2025 target.

– The state of Georgia has declared February 26 as Hyundai Day, celebrating the automaker’s significant investment in the region.

– The Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America in Ellabell, Georgia, will produce various EVs, including the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 models.

– Hyundai’s Georgia investments are projected to generate nearly 40,000 jobs, contributing $4.6 billion in annual earnings, per the Center for Automotive Research.

– The Metaplant is expected to create 8,500 direct jobs with a total investment of approximately $7.59 billion.

– A new battery manufacturing facility, in partnership with SK On, will provide an additional 3,500 jobs in the area.

– Hyundai is also establishing a mobility training center near the Metaplant, indicating a broader commitment to the region’s development.
