California’s BEV Sales Dominate US Market

– Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) made up 21.4% of all new car sales in California for the year 2023.

– Plugin hybrids added another 3.4% to the state’s plugin vehicle sales, emphasizing a strong preference for BEVs.

– Nationwide, electric vehicles only constituted 7.5% of total auto sales in 2023, with California’s high BEV rate significantly impacting this figure.

– California alone was responsible for 33.8% of all BEV sales in the United States.

– When combining BEVs, plugin hybrids, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, these eco-friendly options represented 35.9% of all new car sales in California during 2023.

SAE Sets New Standards for Vehicle-to-Grid Charging

– SAE International has introduced J3068/2, enabling Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) capability for Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging systems.

– This standard allows for “electrical certification” of electric vehicles (EVs) through unique digital identifiers, letting utilities verify if an EV is authorized to supply power back to the grid.

– J3068/2 facilitates utility-EV communication, enabling control over EV power discharge to prevent grid overload and compensate EV owners for supplying power.

– For DC fast charging, the ISO 15118-20 standard governs V2G operations but lacks certain signals and functionalities for AC V2G, which J3068/2 addresses.

– Utility pilot programs have mainly explored vehicle-to-home power supply due to challenges with integrating EV power back into the grid.

– V2G technology could potentially allow millions of EV owners to earn money by providing critical support to the power grid.

– Tesla’s NACS (J3400) standard, simpler and more cost-effective than CCS, can be adapted to work with J3068/2, promoting wider adoption of V2G technology.

– Charger manufacturers are preparing to include AC V2G capabilities in their products, potentially launching AC bidirectional charging in the U.S. before Europe.

– Utilities must develop interconnection procedures and incentives for EV owners to participate in V2G programs.

Volvo EX30 Maintains Initial Infotainment System Amid Feedback

– Volvo plans to reevaluate the infotainment software of its new EX30 compact crossover based on customer feedback, though significant changes are deferred.

– The EX30 has minimized physical buttons, favoring a large touchscreen for most functionalities, a decision that faced criticism for software functionality at launch.

– Contrary to reports of delays for software updates in Europe, Volvo clarified that only minor improvements were made without altering the menu structure or the accessibility of functions.

– The UK’s EX30 deliveries, scheduled for early March to coincide with the registration plate change, remain on track.

– Comprehensive reviews of the EX30 on UK roads are expected soon, indicating that while initial software is in use, Volvo is open to future enhancements based on user experience.

Kempower Partners with Polarium for Enhanced Charging Solutions

– Kempower is collaborating with Polarium, a Swedish energy storage manufacturer, to incorporate battery systems into Kempower’s DC fast-charging stations.

– This partnership aims to boost the power output of Kempower’s chargers, particularly benefiting electric trucks, without necessitating expensive upgrades to the electrical grid.

– By utilizing a battery buffer system that is continuously recharged, Kempower can offer higher charging capacities than what the direct grid connection supports, supplying additional power on demand.

– This solution is not only applicable to individual fast chargers for electric cars, which avoid the need for a medium-voltage connection but also supports the more demanding requirements of electric truck charging stations.

– Kempower highlights that current grid limitations present significant obstacles to fulfilling the anticipated future demand for charging infrastructure.

FedEx Express UK Expands E-Cargo Bike Fleet in London

– FedEx Express UK enhances its London delivery operations with an additional eight 4-wheeled electric cargo bikes, complementing its existing fleet.

– Electric cargo bikes emerge as a pivotal solution for last-mile deliveries, offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional diesel or gasoline vans.

– These e-cargo bikes are not only environmentally friendly but also provide the advantage of navigating city streets more quickly and cost-effectively than ICE-powered vehicles.

– Enclosed electric cargo bikes protect both the driver and the cargo from the elements while ensuring ample space for deliveries.

– The adoption of e-cargo bikes by FedEx Express UK underscores the growing interest in electric micromobility solutions among urban logistics companies for their efficiency and lower operational costs.

– Utilizing e-cargo bikes for deliveries allows for faster urban routing and eliminates tailpipe emissions, making them an ideal choice for congested or emission-restricted areas.
