BMW Expects Combustion Decline From Now

– BMW has reached a significant shift, with electric cars now driving most of its sales growth, outpacing combustion engine vehicles.  Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Walter Mertl stated that the tipping point for combustion engine sales was surpassed last year.

– Mertl anticipates a steady decline in combustion car sales, influenced by upcoming environmental regulations limiting such vehicles.

– In the previous year, BMW recorded a 15% sales share for all-electric vehicles. The company aims to increase this to 33% by 2026, introducing six new models in its EV-exclusive “Neue Klasse” line.

– The “Neue Klasse” initiative, a multibillion-euro investment, is BMW’s strategy to bridge the technology gap with its competitors in the EV market.

– Parity in profit margins between combustion engine vehicles and all-electric cars is not expected until at least 2026, according to Mertl.

– CEO Oliver Zipse has asserted that BMW’s profitability will be maintained or even enhanced with the large-scale production of the “Neue Klasse” EVs.

Honda Eyes Solid-State Batteries for Future Small, Affordable EVs

– Honda’s CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, suggests that a breakthrough like solid-state battery technology is crucial for developing small, cost-effective electric vehicles (EVs) by the late 2020s.

– Mibe highlights the uniformity of battery costs across vehicle segments, emphasizing the expense as a critical factor in EV pricing.

– The company is exploring solid-state batteries to reduce costs and improve range, aiming for a target price around $30,000 for a small EV.

– The implementation of solid-state batteries could also lead to simpler cooling systems and avoid compromising the vehicle’s range.

– Mibe acknowledges the need for significant technological advancements for affordable small car production.

– Honda’s upcoming releases include the 2024 Prologue SUV, developed in collaboration with GM, set to launch soon.

– The company recently announced the discontinuation of the Honda E in Europe, a model priced at nearly 40,000 euros with a range of 138 miles.

Surge in Electric Car Monthly Rental Programs in France

France is experiencing a surge in monthly subscription services for renting electric vehicles (EVs), reflecting the growing popularity of EVs. These subscription plans offer flexibility, allowing users to rent an electric car for periods of three, six, nine, or twelve months, with payments made monthly.

This rental approach is distinct from the French government’s €100-per-month scheme. Renting under these plans offers drivers the opportunity to experience electric cars without the commitment of purchasing one. Subscribers have the option to switch cars, choosing either newer models or alternating between fully electric and hybrid vehicles based on the plan’s terms.

The popularity of these plans coincides with President Macron’s introduction of a government-backed €100-per-month payment plan for lower-income drivers, which started on January 1, 2024. The government’s ‘social leasing’ scheme targets the bottom 50% of households in terms of income, with eligibility based on a taxable income per household unit of less than €15,400.

Eligible drivers for the government scheme are required to be ‘major users’, driving over 8,000 km per year or living more than 15 km from their workplace, which they commute to by car.

To qualify for the government scheme, drivers must be over 18 and provide proof of residence in France.  An estimated 4 to 5 million individuals are expected to be eligible for the government’s low-cost EV leasing program.

Elon Musk Seeks Increased Control in Tesla with New Compensation Plan

– Elon Musk, having previously sold Tesla shares to cover tax liabilities and finance the acquisition of a social media platform, is now seeking greater control in Tesla.

– In a post on social media, Musk expressed discomfort working at Tesla with his current 13% ownership, hinting at a desire for increased voting power.

– Musk’s concern is that with less than 15% of voting rights in Tesla, it is too easy for decisions to

be overridden against his preferences.

– Currently, Tesla’s focus is shifting towards enhancing the “supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD)” aspect of its Autopilot Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), rather than the earlier goal of millions of connected robotaxis.

– Musk’s demand for a new compensation package includes a minimum 25% ownership stake in Tesla, indicating his intent to have substantial influence over the company’s direction.

– These ambulances can sustain essential functions like heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and auxiliary power for a full 12-hour shift.

– A total of twelve electric ambulances are being piloted by NHS England’s Net Zero Travel and Transport team, in collaboration with LAS and four other ambulance trusts, to gather real-life operational data.

– The addition of these new ambulances expands the UK’s largest emergency fleet of electric vehicles, which currently includes 42 electric fast-response cars and three electric motorcycles, totaling 160 zero-emission vehicles.

– LAS has also installed 56 charging stations at ambulance stations to support their growing electric vehicle fleet.
