BRITISHVOLT BOUGHT BY AUSTRALIAN FIRM RECHARGE INDUSTRIES
– Summary: Recharge Industries, an Australian firm, has purchased Britishvolt, a defunct battery maker, out of administration. Though they plan to keep the Britishvolt brand name, their plans differ from the original company’s. They will focus on batteries for energy storage and high-performance sports cars, with products available by the end of 2025. The company is ultimately owned by a New York-based investment fund and have received validation from the US defence industry. Recharge Industries also hopes to create up to 8,000 jobs on site and in the supply chain. Though the UK government had offered £100m to the former Britishvolt owners, the new owners are seeking broad political support from both parties.

TESLA OVERTAKES FORD IN U.S. BRAND LOYALTY AWARD FOR FIRST TIME
– Summary: Tesla has overtaken Ford in the 2022 Automotive Loyalty Awards for U.S. brand loyalty for the first time, with General Motors also winning the award for the eighth consecutive year. Industrywide shortages have caused customer loyalty to drop from 2019 to 2022, but GM has still managed to retain loyal customers. Tesla’s win was driven by its brand resonance with ethnic consumers and its success in the alternative powertrain market. Mercedes-Benz also won an award for its launch of the electric EQS, while Subaru won its first award for “Overall Loyalty to Dealer”. The loyalty awards are based on an analysis of 11.7 million new U.S. vehicle registrations in 2022.

UK DRIVERS AT RISK OF LOSING £9BN FROM ELECTRIC VEHICLE SAVINGS
– Summary: The UK government is being urged to increase its proposed level for the incoming zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate in order to prevent UK motorists from missing out on £9bn of savings. According to the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU), a slower roll-out of new electric vehicles (EVs) could reduce the size of the second-hand market and force low-income drivers to pay more to continue running petrol cars. The ECIU estimates that a reduction in available used EVs would cost UK motorists around £9bn in missed savings by 2043. The government is investing £2 billion to help consumers transition to electric vehicles and the RAC Foundation found that a 40 per cent reduction in carbon emissions from cars can be achieved without drivers travelling less overall.

CHARIN PRAISES FINAL NEVI RULES FOR SUPPORTING EV INTEROPERABILITY AND OPEN STANDARDS FOR CHARGING
– Summary: The Federal Highway Administration’s new NEVI rules specify that federally-funded chargers must conform to the CCS and ISO 15118 standards and include the new Plug and Charge standard and future V2G integration. CharIN, a global association focused on charging standards, has commended the FHWA for taking action to ensure universal, accessible and equitable national EV charging infrastructure. CharIN has also noted that the adoption of open standards will enable economies of scale and accelerate deployment, and that ISO 15118-based Plug and Charge is now the global standard, supported by a worldwide ecosystem of companies.

EV CHARGING SUPPLIER SEES US RAISING COSTS BY CUTTING OFF CHINA
– Summary: Zerova Technologies, a maker of electric-vehicle charging systems, is riding the boom in demand for greener cars in the US. However, the company’s CEO, Jay Yang, believes that the Inflation Reduction Act, designed to reduce reliance on Chinese suppliers and encourage more US manufacturing, will lead to higher costs for consumers. Zerova has a US manufacturing facility and sources materials there, with labor costs being 80% higher than in Asia. This cost is likely to be passed onto the consumer, and the cost of charging infrastructure could double because of the Act. Despite the cost increases, Yang believes that localizing the supply chain is beneficial in the long run, as it will create job opportunities and ensure that the US is not too reliant on China for EV batteries. Zerova has grown from 20 to 600 employees in the last year, and is setting up a presence in Vietnam and Hong Kong.
