US HOUSE PASSES DEMOCRATS’ LANDMARK HEALTHCARE AND CLIMATE BILL
The House passed Democrats’ healthcare and climate spending package on Friday, sending the landmark piece of legislation to Joe Biden’s desk and delivering a much-needed political victory for the party ahead of the midterm elections this November.
Joe Biden is expected to quickly sign the legislation, which he has celebrated as a significant step toward combatting the climate crisis and reducing Americans’ healthcare costs.
The House’s passage of the bill came five days after the Senate approved the package in a vote of 51 to 50, following a marathon session that lasted overnight and stretched into Sunday afternoon.
The legislation includes $369bn in funds aimed at expanding renewable energy sources and lowering planet-heating emissions. Experts have estimated the bill could reduce America’s emissions by about 40% by 2030, compared with 2005 levels.

AUDI, PORSCHE, KIA SAY U.S. EV BUYERS WILL LOSE TAX CREDIT UNDER LEGISLATION
Audi of America, Kia Corp (000270.KS) and Porsche said on Friday that buyers of its electric vehicles will lose access to federal tax credits of up to $7,500 once President Joe Biden signs a $430 billion climate, health and tax measure.
The bill makes any electric vehicles assembled outside North America ineligible for tax credits, which has brought criticism from the European Union, South Korea and many automakers. The bill does allow credits for customers with binding contracts for vehicles not yet delivered when Biden signs the legislation.
Kia said in a letter to its U.S. dealers that the bill means all of its EV and plug-in vehicles will no longer qualify for tax credits once the bill is signed unless customers have written binding contracts. Kia urged dealers to reach out to customers on waiting lists to enter into contracts before Biden signs the bill. The letter, which the company confirmed on Friday, called the “sudden change” in EV tax policy “very disruptive to our business and unfortunately for our customers.”
Porsche said on Friday that buyers of its electric Taycan and plug-in hybrid Cayenne and Panamera vehicles will also immediately lose eligibility once the legislation is signed.
LUCID GIVES AIR SEDAN $6000 STEALTH PACK
Lucid Motors gets mean with their new Lucid Air Stealth Look exterior package, available for the Touring, Grand Touring, and Grand Touring Performance vehicles.
The package brings in changes to 35 exterior components, swapping out the standard silver trim with three dark gray variations, aptly named “black gloss,” “satin graphite,” and “Stealth Polished.” Two new wheel designs are introduced — the 21-inch Aero Sport Stealth Wheels and the 20-inch Aero Lite Stealth Wheels — each specific to the trim level. Even the mirror caps get a darker finish, as do the trim surrounding Air’s Intelligent Micro Lens Array headlights. Further enhancing the assertive and modern appearance, the C-pillar flags, fascia trim, nose blade, and lower doors all get darkened to deliver a cohesive look.
The $6,000 Stealth Look option can be paired with any of the Lucid Air’s five colors and will be available starting in Q1 of 2023.

EV STARTUP FISKER TO RAMP UP PRODUCTION IN 2023, EXPLORING US MANUFACTURING
Electric-vehicle startup Fisker Inc said on Friday it was exploring options to manufacture in the United States in 2024 and was considering ramping up production of its first vehicle, the Ocean SUV, in the second half of 2023.
U.S. manufacturing would make certain vehicle models eligible for a tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act, a $430 billion bill focused on lowering healthcare costs, promoting clean energy and increasing corporate taxes.
The California-based company also said it has sold out the Sport and Ultra variants of the Ocean vehicle that it planned to produce in 2023 for the U.S. market.
Production of the Ocean sports utility vehicle (SUV) is slated to begin this November at contract manufacturer Magna International’s Austrian unit.
BMW HYDROGEN SUV TO ENTER MASS PRODUCTION IN 2025 WITH HELP FROM TOYOTA
BMW has been experimenting with fuel cell technology for many years and was one of the first brands to introduce a production car back in 2005 with the E65-based 7 Series Hydrogen. Later this year, assembly of the iX5 SUV will kick off, but only a small batch will be produced. However, the German luxury marque is determined to make the tech more widely available by the middle of the decade.
Earlier this month, BMW Group Oliver Zipse said a next-generation iX5 is already being considered and that the Neue Klasse platform is being conceived to support a fuel cell. In an interview this week with Nikkei Asia, sales chief Pieter Nota said a mass-produced hydrogen car will arrive as early as 2025. Interestingly, BMW is once again teaming up with Toyota after the Z4 / Supra project. As a matter of fact, Nota added the two companies are working together on “various projects,” suggesting a deeper alliance.
By expressing its commitment to hydrogen, the car manufacturer will therefore cover all the bases and live up to its “Power of choice” slogan.
Rolls-Royce has a different strategy as it’ll go purely electric by the end of the decade, with next year’s Spectre EV leading the way. As for MINI, it too will bid adieu to the combustion engine early next decade

LEXUS LFA ELECTRIC SUCCESSOR COULD HAVE SIMULATED MANUAL GEARBOX
Lexus took us by surprise at the end of last year when parent company Toyota presented its EV strategy that also included the first glimpse of a swoopy supercar.
op Gear magazine sat down and had a chat with Lexus President Koji Sato about the road-going equivalent of the hugely promising Electrified Sport.
TG learned the manual gearbox experience would be simulated through special software, which would likely artificially limit the power of the electric motor to make you change gears and unlock it.
Koji Sato refrained from announcing when the electric supercar will be revealed, but he did share some other tidbits. The Electrified Sport will boast steer-by-wire as with all zero-emissions Lexus models, and he also said torque vectoring is on the agenda.

BYD SURPASSES CATL IN LOADING CAPACITY OF LITHIUM IRON PHOSPHATE BATTERIES
The China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance released power battery data for July on August 11. During the month, China produced a total of 47.2 GWh of power batteries, up 172.2% year-on-year and 14.4% quarter-on-quarter.
The loading capacity of power batteries in China in July was 24.2 GWh, up 114.2% year-on-year. Among them, the loading capacity of ternary batteries was 9.8 GWh, accounting for 40.7% of the total loading capacity. The loading capacity of lithium iron phosphate battery is 14.3 GWh, accounting for 59.3% of the total loading capacity.
CATL continued to lead with 47.19% in July this year, while FinDreams Battery owned by BYD, CALB, Gotion Hi-Tech and Sunwoda ranked two to five,
It is worth noting that at present, lithium iron phosphate batteries have surpassed ternary lithium batteries in terms of total installed capacity, and BYD, which specializes in lithium iron phosphate batteries, has also surpassed CATL in this field,

TESLA STOPS TAKING MODEL 3 LONG RANGE ORDERS AS BACKLOG EXTENDS TO 2023
Tesla has decided to stop taking new orders for its Model 3 Long Range, one of its most popular models, in the United States and Canada. The automaker has adopted this new business model to avoid creating delivery timelines that are super long for customers.
There’s currently a rush to order electric vehicles as the technology becomes more mainstream and, in the short term, grows in popularity due to gas price increases and the new federal EV incentive expected to become law any minute.
the Model 3 Long Range is now greyed out and cannot be selected to order. Tesla added a note that it will be “available in 2023.”
Tesla has also removed the pricing of the vehicle for now. Before today’s update, the price was $57,990. It’s likely that the price will be updated when Tesla reopens orders.
The Model 3 Long Range might be one of the few electric vehicles that could be eligible for the new EV tax credit with the battery and critical mineral criteria, but it is going to have to be less than $55,000 in order to qualify.

LONDON’S SANTANDER CYCLES SCHEME TO ADD 500 E-BIKES FROM SEPTEMBER
Transport for London (TfL) and Santander have announced that e-bikes will be introduced to London’s Santander Cycles scheme from 12th September.
Last month, the scheme recorded its busiest month in its history, with more than 1.3 million hires across the month. To support the scheme’s continued success and financial sustainability, TfL and Santander are introducing 500 e-bikes to its fleet.
The new e-bikes will be distributed across key central London locations.
– A new flat rate of £1.65 per 30-minute ride. This will replace the existing daily access charge, which is £2 for unlimited rides of up to 30 minutes in a 24-hour period, with additional charges for rides over 30 minutes
– A new monthly membership option, costing £20 per month. The membership, which can be cancelled at any time, will allow customers unlimited 60-minute rides in the month and will improve the scheme’s offer to people who do not wish to commit to an annual membership
