HYUNDAI IONIQ 6 PROTOTYPE FIRST DRIVE REVIEW
“Hyundai scored a home run with the Ioniq 5, and it’s looking to replicate that success with the new Ioniq 6. This streamlined sedan is a stark contrast to the boxy cyberpunk aesthetic of the Ioniq 5, but both ride on the same modular electric platform and share powertrains”
“The interior is completely uncovered, and build quality and fit and finish are pretty stellar. This particular Ioniq 6 is a rear-wheel-drive model in the highest trim level, with a 77.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack and a single electric motor putting out about 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Hyundai labeled this test drive as an “energy efficiency experience,” likely to highlight the Ioniq 6’s super-low drag coefficient of 0.21, which should result in a range exceeding 350 miles”
“Despite its 20-inch wheels, the Ioniq 6’s ride quality is superb — even better than the Ioniq 5’s. The Ioniq 6 is great at soaking up big potholes and rough road surfaces, and the cabin is Mercedes S-Class-level quiet.”
” Hyundai is also working on a number of in-car accessories for the Ioniq 6, including a fold-out table with a bunch of USB-C ports. There’s only a small cargo space in the frunk, but there’s room for two sets of golf clubs under the traditional sedan trunk lid.”

FEDEX OFFICE TO PILOT FORD E-TRANSIT VANS AMID BIG EV PUSH
FedEx Express is a major client of BrightDrop, the electric delivery and logistics business of General Motors (GM). FedEx Office is working with Ford Pro — Ford Motor Co.’s commercial vehicle business — to pilot 10 Ford E-Transit vans across its FedEx SameDay City Network, which offers local, door-to-door delivery.
The vans have a targeted range of 126 miles on a single charge, and are being tested in nine markets, so their performance can be assessed in a variety of road and weather conditions.FedEx Office has also installed charging stations for the vans at their home locations, and it’s set to supplement these with remote charging stations in each market, as needed.
FedEx wants its parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet to be entirely comprised of electric, zero-emission vehicles; and in June, FedEx Express announced it had received its first 150 electric delivery vehicles from BrightDrop. These were part of an order of 500 vehicles.
GM’S CFO SAYS THE AUTOMAKER IS HITTING AN INFLECTION POINT
At the 2022 JP Morgan Auto Conference yesterday, General Motors (GM) EVP and CFO Paul Jacobson talked about scaling EV production and said the company is hitting an inflection point.
Speaking with JP Morgan Research Automotive Analyst Ryan Brinkman, Jacobson said GM has some very exciting things going for it. Most importantly, the legacy automaker is hitting an inflection point and expects to ramp EV production.
GM is doubling its EV production target from 1 million by 2025 to 2 million. The company believes its diverse lineup can attract customers in any market. For example, GM has four EV models right now:
GMC Hummer EV
Cadillac LYRIQ
Chevy Bolt EV
Chevy Bolt EUV

NEW NÜRBURGRING RECORD FOR THE PORSCHE TAYCAN
Never before has a series-production electric car posted a faster lap on the Nürburgring Nordschleife: Porsche development driver Lars Kern took just seven minutes and 33 seconds for a lap in the Taycan Turbo S.
The sports sedan was equipped with the new performance kit and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) and – aside from the required roll cage and racing seats – was an entirely standard production vehicle. It weighed the same as the series production car. A notary was on hand to verify the new record time on the 20.8-kilometre circuit in Germany’s Eifel region, while TÜV Rheinland confirmed that the record-breaking road car was a standard production model.
The performance kit is offered through Porsche Tequipment. It is currently only available in Germany and only for the 2023 model year Taycan Turbo S sports sedan. Production of these cars started in late July 2022, while the performance kit itself is expected to be available from the end of the year. The plan is for the retrofit to be carried out after initial delivery, in the Porsche workshops in Zuffenhausen.
RENAULT MEGANE E-TECH IS NOW FRANCE’S MOST POPULAR CAR
“Renault achieves success with its new compact and all-electric car Megane E-Tech, which last month came first in sales of electric cars in France, where in the last three months they managed to sell 25,000 units. That means they’ve hit the 100,000-car-a-year milestone — but can they top Tesla’s Model 3 this year?”
“Megane E-Tech, along with the Dacia Spring, have achieved good sales figures in a country where total new car registrations have fallen, in addition to an automotive crisis with figures still extremely low compared to pre-pandemic levels.”
“Carmakers such as Renault are facing a difficult European market with rising inflation and a shortage of semiconductors, a market which is impossible to control, making the electric car equation a challenging problem”
By 2025, the French brand aims to have a line-up of seven all-electric cars, with the return of the R5 and 4L in a new zero-emissions version.
FORD AND DTE MAKE RENEWABLE ENERGY HISTORY
Ford has made the country’s largest renewable energy purchase from a utility, putting it 10 years ahead of schedule on its carbon-neutral goal.
In partnership with the Detroit automaker, DTE will add 650 megawatts of new solar energy capacity for the state by 2025.
the purchase will increase the total amount of installed solar energy in Michigan by nearly 70%, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. Based on Bloomberg NEF New Energy Outlook, this marks the largest renewable energy purchase from a utility in U.S. history.
THE E-BIKE TAX CREDIT IS ONLY MOSTLY DEAD
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 is a major piece of legislation that would invest an eye-popping $369 billion in clean energy and other climate fighting tools, including billions of dollars for expanded tax credits for electric cars.
A $900 refundable tax credit on the purchase of a new electric bike was left on the cutting room floor by congressional negotiators, to the consternation of bike advocates that have been pushing for it for years.
The pain is especially acute given how close advocates got to passing a real federal policy to incentivize e-bike sales. President Joe Biden’s original Build Back Better proposal included a refundable tax credit worth 30 percent of a new e-bike’s purchase price, capped at $1,500. But Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) had the final word at the end of the day, and the e-bike tax credit was eliminated.

RIVIAN AMAZON DELIVERY VANS DELIVERED MORE THAN 430K PACKAGES DURING PILOT PROGRAM
Rivian reported delivering more than 430,000 Amazon packages with its Electric Delivery Van (EDV) during the vehicles’ pilot deployments. Amazon officially rolled out Rivian’s EDV vehicles last month.
In July 2022, Amazon announced that Rivian EDVs would be deployed in locations across the United States, including Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Nashville, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle, and St. Louis. Rivian and Amazon worked closely together to design the EDV vehicle.
“A close development partnership with Amazon and its delivery drivers enabled us to optimize the EDV features and design for last mile delivery. This process included delivering more than 430,000 packages through multiple pilot deployments that began in early 2021 – these pilots enabled a rapid refinement of a range of features,” stated Rivian in its Q2 Shareholders Letter.
The EV automaker equipped the electric delivery van with rear roll-up doors so it would be easier to load bulky warehouse items. Rivian’s Amazon Delivery Van also has a tall roof, so drivers can easily walk through it. Plus, Amazon EDV vehicles work with Rivian’s fleet management system, called FleetOS.
The EV automaker also highlighted how closely Rivian engineers worked with Amazon employees to optimize EDV features.
