LUCID SLASHES 2022 VEHICLE PRODUCTION FORECAST
– Lucid Group is cutting its car production forecast for this year by as much as 40%, sending shares of the electric vehicle start-up tumbling 14% during after hours trading.
– The company on Monday cited supply chain constraints and parts quality issues for slashing production to between 12,000 and 14,000 vehicles, down from initial expectations of 20,000.
– Rawlinson said Lucid also will delay its second vehicle, an electric SUV called Gravity, to the first half of 2024. It was initially expected in 2023. He said the delay is to refine the product and give more time to impose best practices from launching the Air.
– Lucid said customer reservations now exceed 25,000 units, reflecting potential sales of more than $2.4 billion. That’s up from 17,000 units in November.

APPLE HAS WON AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE PATENT COVERING A NEXT-GEN LIQUID COOLING SYSTEM
– Today the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office officially granted Apple a patent that relates to Project Titan and more specifically to a deaeration device for a thermal system that could be used in Apple’s future electric vehicle.
– In Apple’s patent background they note that liquid heating and/or cooling systems circulate a liquid media through a system. The liquid media travels between components before returning to its starting point, in what is commonly referred to as a thermal loop, a cooling loop, or a heating loop.
– Apple’s granted patent covers a thermal system that includes a deaeration device that operates at high flow rates with much higher efficiency as compared to constant bleed systems.
– Traditional low flow liquid cooling systems pass all of their fluid flow directly through a reservoir. While this approach is acceptable at low flow rates, at higher flow rates the liquid in the reservoir will become turbulent and aeration results.

COPENHAGEN AIRPORT TO INSTALL 1,350 CHARGING STATIONS
– Copenhagen Airport (CPH) plans to build 1,350 charging stations for electric vehicles within the next ten years. The majority of these will be AC charging points, but HPCs for short-term parkers are also planned.
– The agreement now signed with the Danish energy company EWII stipulates that the charging stations will be built in cooperation with ZAPP Mobility, ABB and Monta. The plan is to install 1,320 AC charging stations with 22 kW power and 30 DC chargers with at least 180 kW. Of these, 180 of the AC chargers and 15 of the DC chargers are to go into operation before the end of 2022.
– the 180 kW charging points are to be attractive for two target groups: short-term parkers who bring relatives to the airport or pick them up there, and electric taxis that also transport passengers.
– The CPH airport has 14,000 parking spaces

CITY OF HOUSTON PURCHASES 100 ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO REPLACE AGING FLEET
– The city purchased about 100 new electric vehicles that will replace aging vehicles from the city of Houston’s fleet.
– The initiative is partially being funded off the proceeds from the city auctioning off old vehicles amid a used-car boom. The city spent $899,210 on 97 vehicles that will be used in various city departments including: the Houston Police Department, Houston Airport System, Solid Waste Management Department, and Houston Parks and Recreation Department, according to a press release.
– There are already 40 battery-electric vehicles in the fleet, and Mayor Sylvester Turner anticipates bringing additional electric and low-emission vehicle purchases to the Council in the near future.
– Each EV is expected to save approximately $16,000 in the total cost of operation — from fuel costs being roughly 23% of gasoline costs, maintenance being half the costs, and resale value being twice of a conventional vehicle. In addition, each EV is expected to reduce tailpipe and upstream greenhouse gas emissions by 25 tons compared to a conventional, gasoline-powered vehicle
– Recently, The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County also purchased 20 electric buses for its fleet of 1,300 vehicles in February.

5 WAYS US STATES CAN GET MORE ELECTRIC SCHOOL BUSES ON THE ROAD
– Under the new Clean School Bus Program, to run between 2022 and 2026, the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will cover up to 100 percent of the costs of replacing existing school buses, including vehicles and charging or fueling infrastructure. It’s critical that the EPA use the flexibility provided by Congress to prioritize electric school buses over alternative fuel vehicles under the second portion of the program.
– Diesel school buses contribute to climate change and expose children, drivers and the surrounding community to unhealthy levels of air pollution, with impacts on health and learning.
– traditionally underserved communities — including communities of color and low-income communities — are more likely to rely on school buses for transporting their children to school and to suffer from vehicle-based air pollution. And according to one analysis, federal investment through the Clean School Bus Program could also provide major economic benefits
– Although the Clean School Bus Program is the largest amount of funding established to electrify school buses, this investment is still not enough to transition the entire fleet of 480,000 school buses to electric vehicles — especially when each electric bus costs school districts more than three times their diesel counterparts. States will play a critical role in bridging the current upfront cost gap.
– 1. Set ambitious goals and build a supportive policy environment
– 2. Provide dedicated upfront funding
– 3. Incorporate technical assistance and workforce development strategies
– 4. Ensure electric utility programs adequately and equitably invest in charging infrastructure
– 5. Incorporate equity into all aspects of ESB program design and implementation

TRAINS WITH BATTERIES BIG ENOUGH TO POWER SMALL TOWNS
– Union Pacific recently said it would spend more than $100 million to buy 20 battery-powered locomotives and charging systems from Wabtec and Caterpillar’s Progress Rail, the world’s biggest such purchase to date. Starting in 2023, the Omaha-based railroad will use the trains to pull cars around freight yards in California and Nebraska
– could eliminate 8,000 tons of carbon emissions annually
– Union Pacific ordered locomotives with 2.5-megawatt-hour batteries from Wabtec but isn’t sure the lithium-ion cells they use are durable enough to deploy them on its main, long-haul lines where multiple diesel-powered locomotives are linked up to pull 150 more rail cars
– Other railroads want to start to see whether Wabtec’s battery trains, with lithium-ion Ultium packs supplied by partner General Motors, can do more than pull cars around a rail yard. The Pittsburgh-based manufacturer is readying more powerful machines for Canadian National and Australian mining companies Rio Tinto, BHP and Roy Hill that will be loaded with up to 8 mwh battery packs, says Wabtec CTO Eric Gebhardt.
– “We’re now at 7 mwh (batteries) and we’re going to 8 mwh in the near future. When we do that, we’re going to save 30% on fuel usage,” Gebhardt says. “Because every time you hit the brakes all of that is charging the batteries. It’s several megawatts worth of power going into those batteries. . . . The big difference between a train and a truck is that you may have a mile or two of cars behind you on a train, which are 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 tons.”
– Los Angeles-based Parallel Systems, led by a trio of former SpaceX engineers, is taking high-tech rail ideas even further with plans for relatively small, battery-powered trains making short-haul freight runs that also can operate autonomously, according to cofounder and CEO Matt Soule. “We are creating a vehicle that has truck-competitive unit economics without requiring massive scale,” he says.

NEW 2022 FISKER OCEAN SUV ON SALE IN THE UK FROM £34,990
– The first 5,000 cars built will be in a full bells and whistles spec, badged as Fisker Ocean One, priced from £59,900 and offering the same vital stats as the Extreme model. They’re fitted with special 22-inch wheels and a commemorative digital signature to differentiate these special-run models.
– “It’s 4,780mm long, which, to put in context, it’s about the same length as the BMW X3 or the Tesla Model Y. The wheelbase is 2,920mm”
– “The Ocean may be an SUV, but it drives like a sports car,” Fisker added. “It’s got the handling because it’s got torque vectoring, but it’s also got instant torque.”
– Ocean Sports will use lithium-ion phosphate battery-cell chemistry, while Ocean Ultra and Ocean Extreme cars will use battery packs with a nickel-manganese-cobalt cell chemistry. All batteries are being supplied by CATL”.
– Wiith a CV includes brands like Aston Martin and BMW, Fisker was responsible for the look of the Ocean which, with its pumped-up wheel arches, looks surprisingly athletic. “I did the first sketch, and I did the first clay model,” Fisker told us. “Then it got handed over to the design team and we worked together.”
– “How do we make a car that’s $37,500 and desirable? We had to make some decisions. to create a hood that you can open, you have to have hinges, you have to have seals – it’s quite expensive. So, we decided just to have a fixed hood.”
– Then there will be two more expensive models, straddling the £100,000 mark, developed in the UK by the recently announced Fisker Magic Works, which will be set up and run by former Aston Martin man David King.
– Fisker has confirmed it will launch in the UK in early 2023 with a right-hand-drive version of its new Ocean SUV, which will be offered exclusively through a subscription service managed by Onto for the first 12 months of UK availability.
