THE WORLD LARGEST EV TEST

This week, I participated in NAF and Motor’s big winter test of 31 Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV). The test aims to see how the cars perform compared to the manufacturers’ stated WLTP figures.

As we can see from the numbers in the table below, there are significant variations in how much the cars went under the WLTP range in per cent. The best car was the BYD Tang with only 11 per cent less range.

The most significant deviation from the WLTP range did the Skoda Enyaq iV80 have. The car have a WLTP range of 509 km but did only go 347 km in the test. That is 31.83 per cent less range. NAF has received a lot of reaction on this result as this is the 2-wheel drive version of the Enyaq, and it was beaten by its 4-wheel drive sibling, the Enyaq iV80x with over 50 km.

I did drive the NIO ES8 and was happy with how the car did perform. After the test, I did discover that NIO did give us the wrong WLTP numbers as the car had seven seats and 21-inch wheels. The WLTP-range for the model tested was 488 km, not 500 km used in the official result below. This gives a deviation on 12,9 %, not 15,0 %. This moves the NIO up to fifth place on the list.

All cars did start charged to 100 % in the same garage. However, they were not preheated, and the temperature in the garage was 9 degrees Celsius. This slightly disadvantages cars with more advanced battery heating systems that could have benefited most from preheated batteries.

The starting point in Oslo was 7 meters above sea level. The route’s highest point was a bit after 450 km with an elevation of 1,060 meters.

GOVERNMENT OFFERS UP £500M OF TAXPAYER CASH IN JAGUAR LAND ROVER LOAN GUARANTEE

Half a billion pounds of taxpayer money will be used to guarantee the majority of a loan for Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) to boost its electric vehicle programme.

The total loan is worth £625million and is being provided to JLR by 12 commercial banks. UK Export Finance (UKEF) – a ministerial department of the Government – is guaranteeing 80 per cent of the loan with £500million of taxpayer cash.

The Export Development Guarantee (EDG) will support JLR’s research, development and export of electric cars, the Government says. The guarantee programme was set up to help drive major investment into UK firms.

JAGUAR DETAILS BESPOKE PANTHERA PLATFORM FOR NEW EV FAMILY

Jaguar’s new electric vehicle platform will be built in-house, the company has said, giving new details of its shift to an all-electric line-up from 2025 under Jaguar Land Rover’s Reimagine plan.

JLR CEO Thierry Bolloré initially said the company would look externally for an EV platform suitable enough to underpin a range of upmarket electric Jaguars, but JLR is now working on its own platform, Bolloré told investors in a call on Monday.

Bolloré said that JLR cars, including Jaguars, need a platform that combines design proportions and capabilities not offered by other car makers, citing both the MLA High platform underpinning the new Range Rover and the future EMA platform for smaller Land Rovers.

THE NEW PLATFORM IS CALLED PANTHERA

JLR decision to go it alone on the Jaguar platform rather than save money on development by buying in a platform is likely to be related to JLR’s chief designer Gerry McGovern’s requirement that the cars should look unique as the company takes the brand more towards Bentley territory in terms of pricing.

SKODA ENYAQ COUPÉ IV BRINGS A SPORTY FLAIR TO THE FIRM’S FIRST ELECTRIC CAR

The Skoda Enyaq Coupé IV is the latest electric car from the Czech firm, and it’s even available in a sportier RS trim too.

It’s not strictly an all-new EV, as the Coupé IV offering a new body type over its traditional SUV sibling with its sweeping roof-line giving it a more dynamic aesthetic – similar to what Audi has done with the etron and etron Sportback.

For those in the UK that means orders for the Coupé RS IV open in February, with the car expected to arrive on British soil in June or July, while those after the Coupé IV will have to wait for orders to open in May, with the first deliveries currently slated for August.

The Coupé RS IV has a 220kW power output and will accelerate from 0-100km/h (0-62mph) in 6.5 seconds

REPORT: SAMSUNG SDI AND RIVIAN’S BATTERY JV TALKS COME TO AN END

Rivian has expressed intention to engage in battery cell production, but according to a new unofficial report, it appears that its current battery supplier – Samsung SDI – is not interested in a battery joint venture with Rivian.

Samsung SDI supplies Rivian with 2170-type cylindrical cells (the same form factor as Tesla uses in the Model 3/Model Y and Lucid in the Air). The Elec reports that the talks over forming a potential joint venture in the U.S. were dropped. Nonetheless, Samsung SDI remains Rivian’s supplier.

On top of that comes Rivian terms, which, according to the sources, includes a transfer of the battery making technology, rights to inspect the interior of factories, and no definite contract on the battery volume

Meanwhile, Samsung SDI announced a battery joint venture with Stellantis, with an initial annual production capacity of 23 GWh (40 GWh in the future). Production will start in 2025, but the location is not yet announced.

TESLA HACKER FINDS EVIDENCE OF ‘SEAT ABUSE’ PROTECTION

We’ve reported on the findings of Tesla hacker/researcher GreenTheOnly before, and it seems that a new interesting detail has been discovered, found in relation to information about a new front seat vendor for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars. The cars appear to track metrics and data about how often the seat is adjusted, and “excessive use” can result in users being locked out of adjusting the seat. This sounds, um, annoying.

“they are also introducing “seat abuse” metrics complete with disabling of seat moving for users with helpful messages like “Excessive use of seat track motor detected” “Seat track motor unavailable due to excessive use” and “Wait 5 minutes to adjust seat track position again””

One person in the comments asking: “I wonder if this is tied to the new seat vendor, and the new track motors are known to overheat if used more than a certain duty cycle, so it monitors the duty cycle and enforces a reduced duty cycle to prolong life. Most likely cause would be a kid fiddling with it?”

TESLA TO RECALL NEARLY 54,000 VEHICLES THAT MAY DISOBEY STOP SIGNS

Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) will recall 53,822 U.S. vehicles with the company’s Full Self-Driving (Beta) software that may allow some models to conduct “rolling stops” and not come to a complete stop at some intersections posing a safety risk.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the recall covers some 2016-2022 Model S and Model X, 2017-2022 Model 3, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles. NHTSA said the feature also known as FSD Beta may allow vehicles to travel through an all-way stop intersection without first coming to a stop.

The feature, which appeared to violate state laws that require vehicles to come to a complete stop and required drivers to opt-in for what it dubbed “Assertive” mode, drew attention on social media and prompted NHTSA to raise questions with Tesla.

Tesla said it met with NHTSA staff on Jan. 10 and Jan. 19 “to discuss the functionality, including operating parameters” and the automaker on Jan. 20 agreed to the recall.

TESLA FANS, MUSK INCLUDED, COMPLAIN THAT BIDEN OVERLOOKS THEM

Some Tesla devotees and Chief Executive Elon Musk say the White House has been snubbing America’s top-selling electric vehicle brand — and they’re making their discontent known.

More than 33,000 people have signed a petition on Change.org asking President Biden to acknowledge Tesla’s electric vehicle leadership as he touts EVs as a way to fight climate change. The petitioners have accused the president of ignoring Tesla, a nonunion company, in favor of the traditional Detroit automakers, which are unionized.

The president has visited Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co. factories, met with their chief executives and praised them for taking a lead in electric vehicle development. In addition, he has driven new battery-powered vehicles from GM, Ford and Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler) and displayed them, with some fanfare, on the White House South Lawn.

FARLEY: FORD PRO SERVICES TO BRING IN $45B USING ELECTRIC VEHICLES

Selling vehicles is just the first step in Ford’s plans to make money off its first electric delivery van that the automaker is rolling out this month.

Between plans to sell 150,000 electric Transit commercial vehicles annually from 2023 onward (after building fewer to sell the first year) and creating “charging depots” to help customers manage their fleets, the company’s new Ford Pro group will generate $45 billion by 2025 and more after that, CEO Jim Farley said Tuesday at an elaborate unveiling of the E-Transit and Ford Pro’s strategy.

Ford Pro boss Ted Cannis said the program, called Ford Pro Intelligence, will include:Charging depots where Ford will work with its customers and utilities to minimize EV energy costs and maximize running time. Cloud-based routing to reduce driving time and increase efficiency.Over-the-air updates with new features. The ability for businesses to tailor alerts for maintenance and repairs.

KOENIGSEGG’S TINY ELECTRIC MOTOR MAKES 335 HP AND 443 LB-FT OF TORQUE

Koenigsegg has long been a home for novel engineering, and that’s evident in its new electric motor. Developed for the Gemera four-seater, this electric motor, dubbed the Quark, is a tiny powerhouse. In a package that weighs just 63 pounds, the Quark develops 335 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque

The Quark, announced Monday, combines both radial- and axial-flux constructions to offer a good balance between power and torque.

Those peak power and torque figures are only available for 20 seconds, which is common among EV motors. After 20 seconds, the figures drop to 134 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. That’s fine for the Gemera, which has three electric motors and a 600-hp three-cylinder.

“The Quark is designed to bolster the low-speed range of the Gemera, where you need it, for brutal acceleration,” said Koengisegg electric-motor design lead Dragos-Mihai Postariu in a statement. “The ICE then focuses on the high-speed range. What this means in terms of performance for the Gemera is a big power surge followed by a continuous record-speed push to 400 km/h [248.5 mph] without any torque or power losses.”

WATCH THE RIVIAN R1T TAKE ON TOUGH TOWING TEST

Rivian says that its R1T can tow up to 11,000 pounds but as the guys from The Fast Lane Truck YouTube channel have found out, there’s more to it than meets the eye. For almost a decade, the team has run what they call the world’s toughest towing test and the Rivian is the latest contender. Will range be a concern?

The electric R1T is fitted with a Gen-Y tow hitch fitted with a weight distribution attachment, as recommended by Rivian for trailers weighing over 5,000 lbs. Switching over to trailer mode, the range reduces drastically to just 135 miles on a full charge

he R1T still out-accelerates the Ram 1500 TRX support vehicle, despite its hefty load.
