ELON MUSK REVEALS TRI-MOTOR MODEL S
“Tesla CEO Elon Musk arrived on stage in typically modest fashion — by hurtling around the Fremont test track at 100-plus mph in the new all-electric Plaid (see video above). Speaking to a small but enthusiastic crowd, Musk spent the next half-hour running through the car’s plethora of features” said Digital Trends: “The tri-motor, 1,020-horsepower Model S Plaid sits at the top of the Model S range and comes with a serious boost to its performance specs, including a top speed of 200 mph and an astonishingly zippy zero-to-60 time of just 1.99 seconds. The first deliveries of the Model S Plaid come nine months after Tesla started taking orders for the new vehicle, which, at just a shade over $130,000, is the company’s most expensive production vehicle to date. Musk told the crowd the automaker is ready to deliver the first 25 Model S Plaid cars now, increasing to several hundred vehicles a week “soon,””
“The 1,000-vehicle-per-week run rate is half of the maximum combined output of Model S and Model X previously reached in 2018. Musk did not mention when production of the updated Model X would begin, but reservation holders have recently been told to expect their vehicles in October, at the earliest” reported Fox Business: “The price of the Model S Plaid, which Tesla claims is the world’s quickest car, was also increased by $10,000 just before the event to $129,990, but existing reservation holders will still be able to get theirs for the original price. A less powerful $79,990 Model S is also available for order, but the start of production has not been announced. The Tesla website lists the estimated delivery date for new orders as September-October.”
On the price rise, Rob Mauer from Tesla Daily noted: “Strangely, Tesla still lists the price of the “Plaid” Model X at $119,990 — $10,000 cheaper than the comparable Model S. As a larger vehicle, historically the Model X has been more expensive than the Model S. This is evident on the base “Long Range” trims of each vehicle, where the Model X starts at $89,990 compared to the Model S at $79,990.”

TESLA WARNS NEW MODEL S PLAID WON’T HIT ADVERTISED 200 MPH
“Tesla is warning that its new Model S Plaid won’t hit its advertised 200 mph top speed at launch since it will need a tire and wheel upgrade this fall. says electrek: “But now we learn that the new Model S Plaid won’t actually hit the advertised 200 mph (322 km/h). Tesla added a note to its online configurator stating that it will require new wheels and tires. The indicated Plaid top speed requires proper wheels and tires which will be available in Fall 2021. The automaker hasn’t released much information about the Model S Plaid’s wheels and tires other than two wheel options. It’s unclear what wheel and tire combination is going to be needed to achieve 200 mph, but tires have speed ratings and 200 mph tires are fairly rare (and expensive). Tesla also warns that the 21″ Arachnid wheel package reduces the expected range of the Model S Plaid to 350 miles (down from 390 miles) and it costs an extra $4,500.”
Tesla warns new Model S Plaid won’t hit advertised 200 mph at launch, needs tire/wheel upgrade
And talking of range reductions, the new Model S Long Range. Elon Musk said on stage the car had 412 mile range, which matches what they had been advertising. However after the presentation the website team lowered it to 405 miles. So $79,990 a 7 miles less range, not a deal breaker.
ELON MUSK DEMOS CYBERPUNK 2077 ON NEW TESLA
“Elon Musk teased that Tesla’s new Model S Plaid would be capable of running Cyberpunk 2077 earlier this year, and he’s now demonstrated the car’s “PS5-level performance.” The refreshed Model S includes a new Tesla infotainment system, powered by AMD’s Ryzen processor and a discrete AMD RDNA 2 GPU.” reports The Verge: “We only saw a brief demo of Cyberpunk 2077 running at high frame rates on the $130,000 Model S Plaid during Tesla’s event, alongside a closer look at the updated UI on the infotainment system. You might be wondering why you’d need PS5-level gaming performance in your car”

APPLE HIRES COFOUNDER OF EV STARTUP CANOO AND BMW VETERAN
“Apple has hired Ulrich Kranz, a former BMW executive and cofounder of autonomous electric vehicle startup Canoo, to work on its electric car, Bloomberg first reported. Apple hired Kranz in recent weeks, about a month after he stepped down as CEO of Canoo, people familiar with the situation told Bloomberg. He would report to Doug Field, formerly of Tesla, who heads up Apple’s electric vehicle project, the people said” according to Business Insider: “Kranz worked at BMW for 30 years, and was a senior vice-president for around half of that time. While at the company he worked on the development of Minis, sports cars, and the company’s first SUV. He also led BMW’s Project I, which designed electric vehicles for use in large cities.”

FORD F-150 LIGHTNING EXCEEDS 100,000 RESERVATIONS
“Ford has confirmed that the total number of reservations of the Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck exceeded 100,000! The milestone was achieved in about three weeks since the unveiling on May 19, 2021 (see the debut post and features here) and it’s a huge success.” according to InsideEVs: “That would explain why Ford is now considering also a smaller electric pickup, possibly based on the all-new Maverick model. Customers want electric pickups – surely not all, but it’s such a big market segment that demand is probably overwhelming. The commercial version starts at $39,974 (MSRP) with the Standard-Range Battery, while the Extended-Range Battery increases the price by $10,000 to $49,974. ”

ELECTRIFY AMERICA TAPS INTO CONNECTED HOME CHARGING
“Electrify America is expanding its focus from public charging to the place most EV drivers charge the most—at home. On sale now, the HomeStation Level 2 AC charging station is Electrify America’s most serious effort yet to gain a foothold in home charging, where EV owners typically charge 80% or more of the time.” says Green Car Reports: “The HomeStation is part of Electrify America’s home-charging business, dubbed Electrify Home, announced in 2020. The station itself was announced earlier this year, but is only now going on sale through Electrify Home’s website or Amazon, priced at $649, Electrify America announced Tuesday in a press release. With 9.6 kilowatts of power at 40 amps, Electrify America claims the HomeStation can add 33 miles of range per hour. It can be plugged into a NEMA 14-50 outlet or hardwired, according to the company. A WiFi connection allows the HomeStation to sync with the Electrify America smartphone app, allowing users to remotely start and stop charging. Amazon Alexa integration will soon be added as well, Electrify America said.”
