Show #1010

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 3rd March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 SPOTTED CHARGING AT 149KW AT 80%!

“Here is a very interesting video from Germany, where one of the pre-production prototypes of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 was seen fast charging at an IONITY station. A quick look at the beginning allowed us to see a valuable data point – the car was charging at 149 kW at around 80% State of Charge (SOC). That’s actually a pretty strong level.” says InsideEVs: “During 16-minutes of charging, the car used nearly 42 kWh, which is about 157 kW on average, but we don’t know the details and the starting point (we guess it could be a 22%-80% session if the pack is 72.6 kWh).Hyundai announced that there will be two battery versions – 58 kWh and 72.6 kWh. The battery system voltage is roughly 800 V nominal. The charger was at around 750 V at 80% SOC.”

For the efficiency of the IONIQ it’s about 10 miles a minute. In the German video they say the vehicle reached a peak of 220kW but not on that session. It’s the holy grail of 10 minutes stop, 100 miles range. 20 minute break, another 200 miles or three hours of driving.

I prefer the miles per minute or miles per hour charge rating, because it’s both speed and efficiency.

VOLKSWAGEN CEO TWEETS, MUSK-STYLE

“When the market value of Germany’s Volkswagen briefly rose above the 100-billion-euro mark on Wednesday for the first time since 2015, the boss of the normally staid carmaker took to Twitter, Elon Musk-style, to crow about it.” according to Autoblog: “VW shares soared as much as 6% after investment bank UBS raised its price target on the stock by 50% and said the company’s new electric vehicle platform was set to challenge Tesla’s dominance in the battery electric vehicle (BEV) market. Herbert Diess, chief executive of VW Group, highlighted the UBS note on Twitter and shared the market capitalisation milestone. Diess sent his first tweet using the “@Herbert_Diess” handle less than two months ago and has since tweeted 51 times. While he has managed to amass almost 25,000 followers in this time, Musk can boast of 48.3 million.”

VW’S ID3 ELECTRIC CAR STACKS UP WELL AGAINST TESLA IN UBS TEARDOWN

“A teardown of Volkswagen’s first dedicated full-electric vehicle found it measures up favorably to Tesla models in several key aspects. The deep dive into the ID3 by UBS Group analysts found the MEB platform underpinning VW’s EV models will be fully cost competitive with Tesla and have best-in-class energy density and efficiency.” says Automotive NEws Europe: “Analysts led by Patrick Hummel called the car “the most credible EV effort by any legacy auto company so far.” VW is primarily targeting Europe with the ID3 hatchback, which will be flanked this year with its crossover sibling, the ID4. The latter model will be produced in China and the U.S. in addition to Germany. VW group brands Audi, Skoda and Seat also will introduce vehicles this year that share the underpinnings to boost economies of scale. “

AMPLE IS TRYING TO MAKE BATTERY SWAPPING FOR EVS A REALITY

“A San Francisco start-up called Ample wants to make electric vehicle battery swapping work in the United States following a history of failure by others in the space. Ample now operates five battery swap stations in the San Francisco Bay Area specifically for Uber drivers. Participating drivers with supported electric vehicles can exchange a spent battery for a fully charged one in less than 10 minutes. At launch, Ample supports the Nissan Leaf” says CNBC: “Ample believes swapping will be popular among fleet managers, delivery, service and ride-hail drivers. They log hundreds of miles a day and don’t want to put wear and tear on their batteries by rapid charging them every shift”

CHEVY BOLT LEASE DROPS TO ONLY $107 PER MONTH

“For many, Costco heralds the arrival of free samples – at least pre-pandemic – and great deals on common items. CarsDirect recently reported that the wholesale retailer dipped its toe deeper into the automotive market, offering a promo on the Chevrolet Bolt EV. The deal offers the chance to lease the vehicle for as little as $107 per month.” according to Motor1: “To offer a broader perspective, Costco’s deal brings about $10,000 of savings over the length of the lease, compared to prior deals. For prospective buyers, Chevy is continuing to offer an $8,500 rebate on all Bolt vehicles that you can boost to $11,500 with the Costco bonus. CarsDirect also reports that the American automaker is offering zero percent APR for 84 months on the 2020 Bolt plus $7,000 in GM Down Payment Assistance.”

FORD TO MUSTANG MACH-E BUYERS: SORRY ABOUT DELAYS, HERE’S $1,000

“Quality is a top priority. For Mustang Mach-E customers who have experienced delays receiving their vehicles, we are providing an additional 250 kilowatt-hours of complimentary charging on the FordPass Charging Network. This applies to approximately 4,500 customers, including about 1,500 of whom have already received their Mach-E. In addition, Ford will provide $1,000 toward the purchase of a Mustang Mach-E for approximately 150 customers who have experienced more than one delay due to quality checks.”

FIRST PORSCHE ELECTRIC TAYCAN DELIVERIES TO ROLL OUT IN AUSTRALIA

“The arrival of what will be the most expensive electric vehicle on the Australian market is all-but complete, with German car maker Porsche prepariong to make the first deliveries of its all-electric Taycan four-door sedan in Australia on the weekend. Porsche is believed to have close to 100 Taycan EVs in the country, enough to meet the initial demand for the long-awaited EV, and for each of its 14 stores in Australia to have some on show and available for test drives, which will happen this weekend along with the first deliveries.” reports The Driven: “Orders can also be placed online via the Porsche Car Configurator, which is now live with local specifications and pricing for the Taycan 4S, the Taycan Turbo and the Taycan Turbo S. According to The Driven’s configurations, based on all standard or baseline colours and features and a Victorian postcode, the “drive away” prices for the three models range from $209,818 to $291,202 and a heady $364,142, respectively.”

WORLD’S LARGEST ELECTRIC FERRY LAUNCHES IN NORWAY

“The world’s largest all-electric ferry yet has gone into service in Norway on a route across the Oslo Fjord. Bastø Electric is the first of three battery-powered ferries operated by the shipping company Bastø Fosen to enter Norwegian waters with more in the making in Turkey.” according to electrive; “The Bastø Electric is 139.2-metre-long and 21-metre-wide and was built by the Turkish Sefine Shipyard and has room for 600 passengers and 200 cars or 24 trucks. The battery and fast-charging systems for all three ferries are supplied by Siemens Energy from the battery factory in Trondheim. Bastø Electric uses batteries with a capacity of 4.3 MWh. The fast-charging system has a capacity of 9 MW, according to the shipping company. When docking, the ferry is always “charged at lightning speed”.”
