Show #998

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 19th February. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

HYUNDAI EXPLORES BATTERY LEASING TO LOWER EV PRICES

“Hyundai is looking into battery leasing as a way to lower electric-car prices and ensure environmentally-conscious reuse of battery packs. The automaker on Thursday announced a memorandum of understanding with the South Korean government and partner companies to create an “ecosystem” around EV batteries, according to a press release.” says Green Car Reports: “One of the partners is KST Mobility, which will lease batteries from Hyundai for a fleet of electric taxis. The company will pay a monthly fee for the battery leases, which will result in lower upfront costs for the purchase of EVs, Hyundai said. After “extensive usage,” Hyundai said it will recover the batteries and use them in an energy-storage system for fast charging of EV taxis. While the release did not discuss the scale of this business, or verify that the scheme relates to vehicles built on its upcoming E-GMP platform, Hyundai noted that it recently acquired a patent “for a container that can efficiently transport large quantities of used batteries.””

2021 BOLT EV SEEING LARGE DISCOUNT

“Chevy cranked-up discounts on the 2021 Bolt EV just days ahead of a recently-unveiled redesign. In addition to more than doubling the value of rebates compared to earlier this month, our analysis finds that leasing one can be a surprisingly good deal.” says Cars Direct: “According to a bulletin sent to dealers on February 9th, all 2021 Bolts now offer an $8,500 cash incentive. That’s 70% more than the $5,000 rebate from earlier this month. The change rolled out days before the brand’s unveiling of the Bolt’s 2022 redesign. But that’s not the only improvement. At the same time, the latest version of the Bolt became eligible for GM Employee Pricing. You may not see it advertised yet on Chevy’s website, but this is actually the same deal the brand is offering on the 2020 Bolt. In the case of a Bolt Premier, that’s worth more than $11,000 off MSRP.”

US FORD DEALERSHIPS WILL NEED TO INVEST $35,000 FOR EVS

“Ford has sent a letter to its US dealers to inform them that they will be required to invest a sum of $35,000 to receive the brand’s “next-generation EV certification”. This is meant to cover chargers and service offers for EV” reports electrive: “Ford states in their letter that the initial investment is optional for most dealers at the moment, and is only an estimate to cover charging infrastructure, service equipment, and installation. One of the basic barriers to be able to take EV reservations for Ford requires the dealerships to be capable of demonstrating 240V charging capability and ordering necessary service equipment by April 30.”

VOLKSWAGEN BEGINS ELECTRIC CAR SHARING IN HAMBURG

Rethinking mobility: Volkswagen Group has already succeeded in doing this with the WeShare pilot project in Berlin since 2019 – so successfully, in fact, that fully electric car sharing will now also be possible in Hamburg from February 25.

There are now well over 100,000 people registered with WeShare In Berlin. Around half of them use WeShare at least once a month. In these times of crisis, many people see car sharing as a safe and reliable addition to their mobility. For good reasons: The vehicles are within walking distance. In addition, the cleaning and disinfection intervals of the vehicles have been shortened. According to Reth, there was no reluctance or fear to use the vehicles during the pandemic. Around 800 electric ID.3 vehicles will be on the road in an environmentally friendly manner.”

EVGO AWARDED GRANTS BY STATE OF NEW JERSEY TO SUPPORT DEVELOPMENT OF 30 NEW FAST CHARGERS

– EVgo, the nation’s largest public fast charging network for electric vehicles (EVs) and only platform that is powered by 100% renewable electricity, announced today that it was awarded a series of grants from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to deploy 30 new DC fast charging stalls at eight locations across the Garden State, including at grocery stores, retail shopping centers, and a travel plaza on the New Jersey Turnpike. Development of the new stations will be supported by the New Jersey DEP’s It Pay$ to Plug In program.

BMW CHANGES CHARGING TARIFS IN EUROPE

“The BMW Group has introduced a new tariff structure for its charging services BMW Charging and Mini Charging in 19 European countries. Only one of the two tariffs offers fixed prices at all available charging stations. In both cases, preferential conditions with Ionity cost more.” says electrive; “after a one-time registration, BMW or Mini drivers are supposed to get access to 173,000 charging points in 19 European countries via app or charging card. The vast majority (162,000 charging points) are AC chargers, the remaining 11,000 charging points are operated with direct current. BMW has not yet revealed the number of HPC chargers with more than 150 kW. In Austria, for example, customers are charged by the minute (AC: 0.10 euros per min, DC, 0.47 euros per min), but in the Netherlands, drivers are charged by the amount of energy consumed (AC: 0.27 euros per kWh, DC: 0.41 euros per kWh). Ionity is exempt from the DC conditions (also in roaming). Here, 0.79 euros per kWh is charged”

ARAL IS PLANNING BROADER HPC EXPANSION IN GERMANY

“Aral is combining all activities in the field of e-mobility under its new Aral Pulse brand and has announced that it intends to expand its HPC network in Germany more comprehensively than previously planned: by the end of the year, 500 charging points with up to 350 kW are to be connected to over 120 Aral Petrol stations are in operation.” reports de24.news: “So far, Aral had promised 100 high-power charging points at around 30 German filling stations by mid-2021. This announcement was made in July 2020. At that time, however, Aral was already talking about the long-term planning for “several hundred locations”.”
