Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 28th January. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

“The ultimate focus on driving: no stalks, no shifting. With a stalkless steering yoke, you can enjoy both the best car to drive, and the best car to be driven in.”
Steering wheel: half-circle design. Chopped off across the top. Flat bottom.
No stalk for indicator or changing gear.
Force touch buttons for the turn signals, high beams, honk, Autopilot, windshield control, and voice commands.
“The vehicle uses its Autopilot sensors to intelligently and automatically determine intended drive modes and select them. For example, if the front of Model S/X is facing a garage wall, it will detect this and automatically shift to Reverse once the driver presses the brake pedal. This eliminates one more step for the drivers of the world’s most intelligent production cars.”
Deliveries April 2021.
“We’ve got [the] design fixed. We’re getting to…soon order the equipment necessary to make the Cybertruck work. We’re actually going to be using even bigger casting machines for the rear body of the Cybertruck because it’s a bigger vehicle and you’ve got a long truck bed that’s going to support a lot of load. So we’ll be using an 8,000-ton casting press for the rear body casting as opposed to the 6,000-ton for the Model Y.”
Tesla confirmed its intentions to start production of the Semi in 2021: “Finally, we are excited to ramp the updated Model S and Model X, and deliver our first Tesla Semi by the end of the year.” Elon Musk said that mass production of the Semi will begin when the company starts mass production of 4680 battery cells
VP Drew Baglino said that the setup for a 10GWh annual production rate is set in Fremont,
Elon Musk says will be part rocket.
EARNINGS AND PROFIT
six quarters in a row in which Tesla has reported a profit.
$10.74 billion in revenue
Free cash flow of 1.9 billion in Q4
Q4 $400 million of ZEV credits to pad the bottom line
Q4 profit $270m
Potentially loss without ZEV credits
2020 ZEV credit is $1.58 billion
In the US it’s to GM, and FCA over 1 billion Euros to pool with Tesla to avoid CO2 fines
Tesla sitting on almost $20 billion in the bank
Annual growth at 50% (seems conservative). No clear guidance.
total revenue grew 46% year-over-year in the fourth quarter
For the full year of 2020, Tesla produced a total of 509,737 vehicles comprised of 454,932 Model 3 and Model Y, and 54,805 Model S and Model X.
Vehicle average selling price (ASP) also declined 11% YoY
The Q4 was a truly exceptional quarter:
383 of new stations – 128% more than a year ago
3,840 of new individual connectors (stalls) – 166% more than a year ago
10.0 connectors (stalls) per station on average
“For the first time, our total battery deployments surpassed 3 GWh in a single year, which is an 83% increase compared to the prior year. This growth was driven mainly by the popularity of the Megapack, our utility scale storage product. Powerwall demand continues to increase as the residential business continues to grow. While we have made progress on production, we should see even further increases in supply in the next few months.
Our energy storage business continues to be supply-constrained as backlog remains strong. We are looking to increase capacity both on the manufacturing equipment side as well as supply chain side, to allow us to continue to grow at a similar pace again in 2021.”
SELF DRIVING SUBSCRIPTION (NOW OVERDUE)
Coming in a month or two.
Also from Elon Musk: “We’ve had some preliminary discussions about licensing Autopilot to other OEMs.”
