Show #940

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 1st December. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

LUCID COMPLETE FACTORY BUILD

“Lucid Motors officially completed the construction the first phase of its Lucid AMP-1 (Advanced Manufacturing Plant – 1) factory in Casa Grande, Arizona – within a year since the company broke ground on the 590-acre site on December 2, 2019.” says InsideEVs: “The plant, at its current stage, will have an initial capacity of 30,000 units of the Lucid Air model annually “to supply global markets, beginning with North America. Lucid is now busy with the commissioning of production equipment and intends to start series production of customer cars in Spring 2021. Before that happens, over the next few months, Lucid will build production-representative versions of the Air, fine-tuning its production line. In total, four phases are planned through 2028 (the square footage of the factory will expand from 999,000 square feet to 5.1 million square feet). The final form will have the manufacturing capacity of up to 400,000 electric cars annually (multiple models).”

Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO, Lucid Motors said:  “We broke ground on the 590-acre Lucid AMP-1 site in Casa Grande, Arizona, on December 2, 2019, and slightly less than a year later we have completed the first purpose-built EV factory in North America. The effort and agility demonstrated by this team is truly astounding, as we’re already commissioning equipment compatible with the Lucid manufacturing system to start production of the next-generation EV, the Lucid Air, in just a few months.”

We know a SUV is coming next and then two more models.

VW FACES LEADERSHIP CRISIS AS CEO DEMANDS A VOTE OF CONFIDENCE

” Volkswagen risked a leadership crisis Tuesday after Chief Executive Herbert Diess forced a vote of confidence in his reform efforts by asking for an early contract extension.” writes Autoblog “The multi-brand car and truck maker is convening its Executive Committee to discuss Diess’s demand for the contract extension, long before his current term comes to an end in 2023, three sources told Reuters on Monday.Volkswagen Chairman Hans Dieter Poetsch is seeking to avert a clash between labor leaders and Diess by postponing discussions about a contract extension, a person familiar with the matter said. Diess, who defected from BMW in 2015, and helped Volkswagen to reform after its diesel scandal with an $87 billion electric vehicle investment plan, has grown frustrated with German labor leaders blocking cost cuts. labor representatives control half the seats on the board of directors and local politicians have a 20% voting stake, allowing them to vote down significant strategic reform proposals.”

A version of back me or sack me.

You know, if they can’t fight the unions and he leaves. Nailed on he’ll run Tesla Europe or TEsla EMEA. With Elon as CEO, Drew Baglino as SVP Powertrain and Jerome Guillen President of Automotive, there’s a COO role somewhere to run Tesla as a whole – energy, solar, insurance etc.

But would it be too much of a demotion. VW sld 10.96million vehicles in 2019 whereas Tesla will do 500,000 this year. He currentyl manages a company with 671,000 employees, Tesla around 50k.

Herbert Diess wrote for Handelsblatt newspaper last week: ” When I took office in Wolfsburg, I had firmly resolved to change the VW system. This meant breaking up old, encrusted structures and making the company more agile and modern. Together with many companions with the same level of motivation, I succeeded in doing this in many places, but not in some, especially not yet at our corporate headquarters in Wolfsburg.””

EUROPE: PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR SALES TRIPLED IN OCTOBER 2020

“October was almost a record month for plug-in electric car sales in Europe, slightly behind September, as the volume almost tripled year-over-year. 146,606 new plug-in passenger cars were registered during the period (up 195% year-over-year), which represents roughly 13% of the market. BEVs: 73,257 ” says INsideEVs: “After ten months of 2020, close to 919,000 new plug-in passenger cars were registered in Europe, which is 9.5% of the total volume (5.1% falls on BEVs)! With two more months to be added, Europe might end at over 1.2 million.”

EUROPEAN FAVOURITE MODELS

“This time the top model was the Volkswagen ID.3, which is its second month on top. ID.3 logged 10,584 new registrations. Interesting is that 7,911 of those were in just three countries: the Netherlands (2,789), Germany (2,647) and Norway (2,475). The second best – Renault ZOE – noted 9,890 registrations, but here also most of the sales (7,517) come from just two countries: Germany (5,010) and France (2,507).”

Hyundia Kona

Kia E-Niro

Peugeot e-208

Audi e-tron

Clearly October a rough month for ships arriving here. No Tesla was in the Top 20.

As for the year so far

1) Zoe (73,403)

2) Model 3 (58,063)

3)  Kona

4) e-Golf

5) etron

12) VW ID.3 (20,337)

VW GROUP COMPONENTS MAKES 40% OF ID.4 COMPONENTS

“The VW Group subsidiary Group Components has now published which parts their ‘Components’ division supplies for ID.4 and in which plants these parts and their preliminary products are manufactured.” says electrive: “According to Volkswagen Group Components (VWGC), it contributes around 40 per cent of the total value added to the electric SUV, which is allegedly ten percentage points more than a comparable internal combustion engine model. VWGC is an entrepreneurially independent business unit and is responsible for the development and production of strategic components for the Group brands.”

“In addition to the components that VW Group Components produces for the ID.4 and other MEB models, other important platform suppliers have now been revealed: The MEB drive control unit comes from Continental’s drive division Vitesco Technologies. The Dutch semiconductor manufacturer NXP is the sole supplier for the battery management systems of the MEB platform. TI Fluid Systems (TIFS) builds the heat pump module for the ID.3 and ID.4.”

TESLA OWNERS ARE GOING TO BE ABLE TO REMOTELY VIEW CAMERAS

“Tesla’s Sentry Mode is about to bring things to a whole new level by enabling Tesla owners to remotely see what their cars can see through Autopilot cameras.” writes electrek: “Earlier this year, Tesla released a new in-car Sentry mode viewer — facilitating the review of the footage for owners. Now hacker “green,” who has been revealing new Tesla features found in software updates, believes that the automaker is working on letting owners remote livestream what their cars see with their Autopilot cameras. Tesla owners can already have an extensive look at the status of their vehicles, including the doors open or close, same for windows, charge port, and more. Now they are going to be able to see around their vehicles even if no Sentry Mode event has been activated.”

@greentheonly: “Well, the remote camera viewing seems to be in the wings, whenever they’ll drop it in 2020.48 or if they’ll postpone it again — I don’t know.”
