Show #921
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
Welcome to a new EXECUTIVE PRODUCER ANDREW GREEN
CLARIFICATION #1
Last week I brought you the story about EV’s beating diesel for the first time. I wasn’t clear, and I should have been, that it was BEV/PHEV and HEV. So not just cars with plug sockets on.
“Data from Jato Dynamics shows one in four new cars registered last month was a hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, while the diesel market slumped to a record low. It’s the first time more than 300,000 hybrid and electric cars have been registered in a single month, and only the second time they have made up more than 20 percent of European registrations.” says Motor1.com: “the Volkswagen Group, which includes Skoda, SEAT, Audi, and Volkswagen among other brands, is now Europe’s top-selling electric car manufacturer, while Mercedes-Benz was the plug-in hybrid market leader with a 22 percent market share. The best-selling single electric car, however, was the Tesla Model 3, with 15,702 examples registered.”

CLARIFICATION 2
Also last week we talked about Panasonic developing the 4680 batteries with Tesla. And I wasn’t sure at the time if that was to work on cells or battery assembly. And further reporting over the weekend show that Panasonic is indeed going to make the 4680 cells at GigaNevada with Tesla. Panasonic’s Chief Financial Officer Hirokazu Umeda: “also said the company has decided to launch an additional production line at the Nevada factory next year, increasing the plant’s total capacity by some 10% to 38-39 gigawatt hours (GWh) a year by around 2022. “We are targeting a profit margin of around 5% at our Tesla battery business within two to three years,” he added.”
The balance of making 2170 cells vs 4680 cells wasn’t discussed.
39GWh would be 780,000 batery packs a year at an average size of 50Kwh, and 520,000 packs a year at an average of 75kWh per pack. Either way, a lot of cars and storage. Tesla have a pathway to ~2 million cars by the end of 2022 Berlin and Austin at volume production so Nevada could supply a quarter to a third of the required batteries. The Berlin made Model Y will be the first volume production vehicle to use the 4680 cells, shipped from the pilot line at Kato Road in Fremont. The shift from 2170 to 4680 will be one to watch.
@elonmusk
7 Oct
Berlin will use 4680 cell with structural battery pack & front & rear single piece castings. Also, a new paint system. Lot of new technology will happen in Berlin, which means significant production risk. Fremont & Shanghai will transition in ~2 years when new tech is proven.
BIDEN AIMS TO IMPROVE US EV TAX CREDIT
“If elected president of the United States, Joseph R. Biden would do a few things for the electric vehicle industry. Biden plans to restore the full EV tax credit (permanently) for US-made EVs, remove the per-manufacturer cap, target it to middle-income consumers (<$250K income)” reports CleanTechnica

BMW INEXT COMING NEXT WEEK
“BMW will unveil its new all-electric SUV on November 11. It’ll be based on BMW’s next-generation electric motor architecture, which the company is calling fifth-generation eDrive. Each drive unit packages together not only the electric motor itself, but the transmission and the system electronics. The result is a more flexible approach to electrification, giving BMW the potential to make front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive versions of its EVs, with one, two, or more drive units.” says SlashGear. The BMW iX3 is being produced in China with this tech but won’t come to the US, unlike the iNEXT
It will be on the common platform, so combustion or electric powertrains, although the iNEXT is EV only. Expectations are for 120kWh and 360 miles. That would be 3 miles per kWh. Compared to Tesla Model S over 4mpkWh and Model 3 goes 353 miles on 75kWh for 4.71 miles/kWh. As always efficiency is king. Tune in 2pm CET.

TESLA’S UPDATED FULL SELF-DRIVING NEEDS A THIRD FEWER INTERVENTIONS
@elonmusk: “This update addressed several issues, resulting in perhaps ~1/3 fewer interventions. Many of the improvements consist of fixing silly bugs vs grand eureka moments. True for most beta releases in my experience.”
How often will updates be rolled out? @elonmusk “Every 5 to 10 days”
HONDA JOINS FIAT IN TAPPING TESLA FOR EUROPE EMISSION COMPLIANCE
“Honda Motor Co. has joined Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV in pooling its fleet with Tesla Inc.’s to comply with Europe’s tougher emissions standards for passenger cars this year.” writes Bloomberg: “Honda was newly added as of last week to a European Commission filing in which manufacturers declare their intent to join together in meeting greenhouse-gas emissions standards. Fiat Chrysler had already reached an agreement to pool its fleet with Tesla’s. Last week, Volvo Cars announced it will overachieve in meeting the regulations and allow Ford Motor Co. to pool with its fleet for an undisclosed sum”

NIO & XPENG DELIVER RECORD EVS
NIO delivered 5,055 vehicles in October 2020, a new monthly record representing a strong 100.1% year-over-year growth.
The deliveries consisted of 2,695 ES6s, the Company’s 5-seater high-performance premium smart electric SUV, 1,477 ES8s, the Company’s 6-seater and 7-seater flagship premium smart electric SUV, and 883 EC6s, the Company’s 5-seater premium electric coupe SUV.
XPeng delivered a total of 3,040 Smart EVs in October 2020, consisting of 2,104 P7s, the Company’s smart sports sedan, and 936 G3s, its smart compact SUV. The Company’s October deliveries represented a 229% increase year-over-year.
BYD INCREASES PROFITS THROUGH Q3 OF 2020
“BYD generated sales of 44.52 billion yuan in the third quarter of 2020 (around 5.72 billion euros). This is around 40 per cent more than in the same period last year. Net profit rose by over 1,300 per cent to 1.75 billion yuan, equivalent to around 220 million euros.” reports electrive: “BYD recently announced that it is working on a new platform for next-generation electric cars. Thanks to the new platform, BEV production will cost less. In addition, the manufacturer says the electric cars should offer a similar range as combustion engines. The first model based on the new BYD platform will be presented at Auto China 2021.”
TESLA MODEL 3 WITH NEW LFP BATTERY NOW SUPERCHARGES EVEN FASTER?
“Initial supercharging results suggest that the new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery powered Tesla Model 3 can supercharge even faster than the version with the nickel battery. This looks promising, and is not unexpected.” writes Dr Max Holland for CleanTechnica: “Photos tweeted via Ray4Tesla (access the tweet below for full sized photos) recorded that the speed of supercharging from ~40% to 99% was significantly faster for the LFP variant. The supercharging session photos in the above tweet demonstrate that the original nickel-based battery Tesla Model 3 took ~62 minutes to go from 40% to 99% state of charge (SOC), whilst the LFP variant took just ~42 minutes to get from 41% to 99%. Whilst there are many varieties of LFP, each of which can prioritize different characteristics, one of the general strengths of most types of LFP is standing up relatively well to both high cycle life and also to high power (high C-rate) charging.”
Appears to be 120kW Superchargers, and of course variables like temps make this non-scientific.
RIMAC COMPLETES SECOND ROUND OF CRASH TESTS
“Since it was first showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in 2018, Rimac Automobili says its C_Two model has been undergoing an intense testing program, part of which has involved crash testing multiple prototypes.” according toto automotivetestingtechnologyinternational.com: “Rimac says that the latest round of full-vehicle physical testing – necessary to finalize the behavior of the carbon composite structure during an impact – is a confirmation of the virtual modeling. In total, Rimac Automobili says it will produce 13 prototype vehicles and five pre-series production cars – 11 of these 18 will be destroyed during crash testing – to complete the worldwide homologation and testing process, allowing the final production car to be sold in every market around the globe.”
PORSCHE TAYCAN CROSS TURISMO SPIED CAMO-FREE
.”The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is almost ready for its big debut later this year. The automaker’s all-electric performance wagon has been seen testing on public roads several times over the last year, and today we have a new batch of photos showing a completely undisguised prototype in Germany. It’s probably safe to say that what you see in the gallery below is 99 percent the final design of the car.” says Motor1: “The modernistic wagon may look at least a little different than the regular Taycan but it is expected to be almost completely identical underneath the skin. This means power will range from 530 horsepower (395 kilowatts) to 761 hp (567 kW) but there may be small upgrades in the battery department. Porsche recently gave the Taycan a host of improvements for the new model year including shaving 0.2 seconds off its 0-to-124 mile-per-hour (200 kilometer-per-hour) acceleration time to 9.6 seconds.”
