Show #888

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 11th  September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

ANY CAR WITH CCS APPEARS TO BE WORKING ON TESLA SUPERCHARGERS IN EUROPE

Any EV is charging on v3 Superchargers

VW e-Golf

VW ID.3

BMW i3

Opel Ampera-e (Chevy Bolt EV)

Hyundai Kona Electric

Hyundai IONIQ Electric

Renault Zoe

Porsche Taycan

Possible explanations:

1) Mistake. Something to do with the V3. Car does most of the work.

2) Handhsake fail.

3) A Test. Opening up the network to others. Recent licence to be an electricity supplier. Free for Tesla, charged for others.

4) New EU law

How will Tesla owners feel if all the stalls are full of other EVs.

Most EVs charge at 50kW, and the point of v3 is to charge TEsla quickly

TESLA MODEL Y GIGACASTINGS

“Aerial footage of the Fremont Factory suggests that the electric car maker has begun to test the production of the Model Y’s single-piece rear casts. Tesla enthusiast Gabeincal recently conducted a flyover of Tesla’s Fremont facilities, from the Roadrunner line in Kato Road to the new developments in the main vehicle production plant. Based on the Tesla enthusiast’s drone footage, it seemed evident that the company is currently deploying what appears to be a second “Giga Press” machine on the grounds of the Fremont factory. ” says Teslarati: “Reports have pointed to Gigafactory Shanghai also receiving a “Giga Press” for its Model Y production line in its Phase 2 zone, and filings from the electric car maker indicate that Giga Berlin will deploy a whopping eight “Giga Presses” for its operations. The utilization of these machines, together with other innovations, should allow Tesla to improve its operating costs”

MASERATI CONFIRMS EV SUV LAUNCH IN 2022

“Maserati just revealed the very enticing MC20, which will be available with a 621 horsepower V6 engine driving the rear wheels. However, it will also be made available with a fully electric powertrain within the next few years; this seems to be a trend for Maserati, as the manufacturer announced it had entered a new era in which it would embrace electrification.” according to InsideEVs: “2021 is the year when Maserati will also introduce the all-new GranTurismo and GranCabrio models and in-keeping with its new commitment to electrification, both will get pure EV variants too; these will debut one year later, in 2022”

ALDI TO BUILD 1,500 CHARGING STATIONS IN GERMANY

“Supermarket chain Aldi Süd has announced the construction of a further 1,500 charging stations in the parking lots of its stores. This would mean that more than 75 per cent of the discounter’s stores would have at least one charging point.” says electrive: “Before the end of this year, 200 stores are to receive a new charging station. Subsequently, around 300 charging stations are to be built and put into operation each year. At this rate, the announced expansion would be completed in 2024 or 2025.”

HYUNDAI AND SK INNOVATION SEE LEASED EV BATTERY PACKS PART OF MORE SUSTAINABLE ECOSYSTEM

“Hyundai and South Korean battery manufacturer SK Innovation are teaming up on EV battery leasing—or at least the need for it. The two companies hope to develop an “ecosystem” that includes reuse of battery packs for stationary energy storage, as well as recycling, Hyundai said in a press release Tuesday.” according to Green Car Reports: “This “battery as a service” model envisions battery packs as part of a leasing or rental service, Hyundai said, providing another possible revenue stream for automakers and battery manufacturers beyond car sales. The partnership aims to “strengthen the stability of the battery supply chain,” and will start by studying battery packs used in the Kia Niro EV, according to Hyundai. The case for battery leasing (and swapping) was laid out well long ago by Better Place, but no companies have been able to make a viable business case around leasing the battery of an electric car to customers. In August, Nio announced a battery-leasing option, in which customers pay a monthly fee in exchange for a substantial reduction in the vehicle’s price.”

OPEL ZAFIRA-E LIFE NOW AVAILABLE IN GERMANY FROM €45,825

Opel has opened the order books for the new Zafira-e Life – the all-electric, flagship variant of the Zafira Life “lounge on wheels”.

Available in Germany at a list price of only €53,800 (RRP including VAT, Zafira-e Life M Selection). This sum is reduced to €45,825 thanks to the environmental bonus in Germany.

75kWh and a class-leading range of up to 330 kilometres (ideal for large-family vacations) or with 50kWh and a range of up to 230km, both in the WLTP cycle.

With the “OpelConnect” e-remote control functions, customers can use their smartphones to check the battery’s state-of-charge or programme air conditioning and charging times.

ELECTRIFY AMERICA EXPANDS HOME CHARGING OFFERINGS WITH LAUNCH OF ELECTRIFY HOME

Electrify America has expanded its product portfolio with the launch of a new business unit called Electrify Home, designed to empower an independent lifestyle for electric vehicle drivers with convenient home charging solutions.

The introduction of Electrify Home follows the launch of the company’s first-ever Level 2 Home Charger last year – an easy solution for keeping an electric vehicle charged at home – and is part of Electrify America’s continued commitment to driving EV adoption by making ownership as convenient as possible.

As part of the launch, Electrify America will feature an Electrify Home web store on its existing website where customers can shop Electrify America’s Level 2 Home Charger, offering a simple and efficient purchase approach for existing and prospective EV owners. The Electrify Home web store offers a one-stop solution to charging at home.

Nina Huesgen, senior manager, Home and eCommerce at Electrify America: “”Right now, about 80 percent of electric vehicle charging is done at home. With the launch of Electrify Home, we’re providing flexible and forward-thinking home charging solutions for EV drivers of today and tomorrow,”.

GOOGLE MAPS GETS MORE ELECTRIC-CAR FRIENDLY

“Google Maps will now tell you your estimated battery level at arrival when you put a route into the navigation. In 2015, when Tesla introduced this feature into its cars, CEO Elon Musk said it would be the end of “range anxiety.” Indeed, it helps a lot to make it clear to the driver if you will get to your destination easily or if you should charge somewhere along the way. And the estimate does update as you drive.” says Clean Technica: “Furthermore, Google Maps will look for fast chargers along your route and identify them for you in case you want to fast charge. You can add charging stations to your driving route before leaving or while on the way. “If you add a charging station along the route, you’ll find a recommended minimum charging time,” Google writes.”

GM WILL USE A WIRELESS SYSTEM TO MANAGE ITS ULTIUM ELECTRIC CAR BATTERIES

“GM plans to become the first automaker to use a (nearly) wireless battery management system for vehicles using its new Ultium battery.” says Autoblog: ” It will allow GM to drop a system with common battery components into many different types of vehicles — from performance cars to heavy trucks — rather than devise new wiring and communications systems each time. And it will be able to take over-the-air updates via GM’s new Vehicle Intelligence Platform.”
