Show #884

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 7th September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

PORSCHE TAYCAN CROSS TURISMO SPIED TESTING AT THE RING

“Do you see that ridiculously fast wagon taking on the Nürburgring? Well, that’s the future of performance wagons everywhere, welcome to the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo. This impressive machine silently takes on the Nürburgring during what appears to be the final phases of testing as most of the car is exposed and barely any camo exists. The Taycan Cross Turismo is the first of many future iterations of the Porsche Taycan EV ” says Motor1.com: “The Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo is almost production-ready and based on the spy video will prove to be an impressive machine. In a world that is losing wagons at an alarming rate, it’s great to see a new addition on the horizon.”

PORSCHE’S FUTURE PANAMERA PLANS JUST GOT WAY MORE INTERESTING

“The second-generation Porsche Panamera just received a mid-life refresh to ensure it remains competitive for the next few years. Along with the Turbo becoming the Turbo S (we’ll never complain about more horsepower), a new hybrid trim was added, the 4S E-Hybrid. An all-powerful Turbo 4S E-Hybrid is also coming soon. But there’s still a fine line separating the plug-in hybrid Panameras from the new and all-electric Taycan. Interestingly, this line may vanish in the not so distant future. Speaking to Australia’s Go Auto, Porsche product line vice president Dr. Thomas Friemuth admitted a full-electric Panamera is under serious consideration.” says CarBuzz: “The early success of the Taycan has also proven customers are more than ready for an all-electric Porsche. In 2022, the next-generation Macan SUV is set to arrive and it too will be a pure battery-electric.”

“We have to think where are the markets going and we have to now follow what’s happening with our Taycan – our smaller limousine in terms of battery electric vehicles – and then we will see in the future what is happening. We don’t see a big overlap between these two cars. Panamera is a luxury sedan and a sports car and a big car with a lot of roominess and interior space. When you see the Taycan, you will vastly imagine that this is a different car – we don’t see much overlap from the customer perspective between Panamera and Taycan.”

NEW YORK UTILITIES, ENEL X, & UPLIGHT LAUNCH SMART EV CHARGING PROGRAM

“If you live in the utility districts of Central Hudson Gas & Electric and Orange & Rockland, you’ve got a cool new offering. Those utilities have partnered with Uplight and Enel X to get more smart EV chargers into people’s homes and help them charge on 100% green, clean, renewable energy.”  says CleanTechnica: “Customers in the pilot program get a $450 instant rebate when purchasing specific Wi-Fi enabled JuiceBox EV charging stations. After buying one on their utility’s online Marketplace, the charger needs to be enrolled in the Charge Smart Program. Customers can then check on their charging patterns and customize them through the Enel X JuiceNet platform, which includes an app and a smart charging web dashboard.”

“This program automatically charges the vehicle during times of the cleanest power generation – decreasing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions.

BILL GATES: HEAVY-DUTY BEVS LIKE THE TESLA SEMI WON’T WORK—BIOFUELS A BETTER OPTION

“Bill Gates’ recent post about electric vehicles contained a number of interesting insights about his views on electrification. While the Microsoft co-founder noted that EVs present an ideal solution for short-haul travel, he argued that battery-electric vehicles will probably never be a practical solution for heavy-duty machinery like 18-wheelers. This makes vehicles like the Tesla Semi inherently flawed, at least according to the tech visionary. ” writes TEsalrati: “Gates explained in his post that EVs do not work as long-haul vehicles like semitrailers because batteries are big and heavy. According to Gates, this results in an inherent problem, since moving more weight would require batteries, and more batteries would result in additional weight. Thus, even if electricity is drawn from zero-carbon sources, and even with innovations in battery tech, there are simply things that batteries would not be best at. The Microsoft co-founder explained that biofuels today are far different than the biofuels of the past such as ethanol. He added that some biofuels could be drawn from plants that aren’t grown for food, and some could even be used in existing engines without requiring any modifications. However, challenges remain with the rollout of biofuels for long-haul travel. ”

Bill Gates wrote: “”The problem is that batteries are big and heavy. The more weight you’re trying to move, the more batteries you need to power the vehicle. But the more batteries you use, the more weight you add—and the more power you need. Even with big breakthroughs in battery technology, electric vehicles will probably never be a practical solution for things like 18-wheelers, cargo ships, and passenger jets. Electricity works when you need to cover short distances, but we need a different solution for heavy, long-haul vehicles,” ”

AURUS ESCORT: PUTIN’S PRESIDENTIAL MOTORBIKE WILL BE ELECTRIC

Putin is modernizing his fleet, and he chose a newly developed range of vehicles under the Aurus label. It seems that even Putin cannot deny the higher quality and technology of electric vehicles. There it is — Putin’s choice of an electric escort motorcycle. Perhaps Russia’s advancements in cleaner technology are going to move forward.

Moto Station writes,

What can be said about these new bikes is that they will be purely electric. The Russian president obviously has great importance for his fleet of vehicles and the Russian style. But switching to electricity with these escort bikes is quite surprising. Is it to restore his image? The country is committed to reducing oil production as one of the world’s leading oil and gas producers.”

TESLA OWNERS BAND TOGETHER TO PUT TRASH CANS AT SUPERCHARGERS

“Tesla owners have banded together through an owners’ club in California to put trash cans at Superchargers and keep the charging stations clean. Who the hell leaves their trash on the ground? Well, a lot of people unfortunately.” says Electrek: “At Tesla Supercharger stations, there is often no trash can as the owner of the site and Tesla are often not clear on who’s responsibility it is to keep the site clean. The Tesla Owners Club of San Joaquin Valley have installed their own trash can at the local Supercharger station. They have a QR code on the trash can that let the club know if the trash can is full or if they want to join the club.”

TESLA MODEL 3 BUCKS TREND OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES DEPRECIATING RAPIDLY

“On average, your average new sedan depreciates 39 percent in its first three years. Trucks go down 34 percent. But electric vehicles drop an astonishing 52 percent, according to iSeeCars, which evaluated values of cars coming off lease.” says Car & Driver: “The outlier is the Tesla Model 3—both compared to other EVs and the market as a whole—which iSeeCars estimates is worth only 10 percent less coming off lease after three years than when it was new. Tesla’s technological advantages—real and perceived—are a big reason the 3 keeps so much of its value. They help keep the Model S and X above average as well. The downside of that strong demand, of course, is that finding a smashing deal on a used Model 3 is a challenge. Aside from the low depreciation rate, there just aren’t that many available on the used market. The overall high rate of depreciation for EVs has many causes, from the rapid advance of new battery technology to the fact that some new-EV purchases are subsidized by the $7500 federal tax credit. Here again, Tesla stands out. The company has sold enough EVs that the full tax credits no longer apply to its new offerings. Also, its over-the-air software updates can give even used cars new features.”

SKODA CANCELS CITIGO WHILE VW TEMPORARILY STOPS E-UP ORDERS

“Following the combustion Citigo taken off the shelves last year, now the electric Citigo-e iV will follow. VW has also imposed a temporary order stop for the e-Up in Germany. In the UK, however, the VW e-Up is still configurable.” says electrive: “While the order stop for the VW e-Up in Germany is officially only temporary, the Škoda Citigo e iV has entirely been discontinued – far beyond Germany. While the electric vehicle proved popular in the UK, Sales and Marketing Director Alain Favey told Autocar: “Citigo is gone”
