Show #878
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 28th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
TESLA, THE FBI AND $1M HACK ATTACK
“Earlier this week, the FBI arrested a 27-year-old Russian citizen for attempting to carry out a ransomware attack against a US company. It turns out that company was Tesla” says Autoblog: “Egor Igorevich Kriuchkov traveled to the U.S. and contacted a Russian speaking, non-U.S. citizen who was working at the Tesla Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada. After meeting with that individual, Kriuchkov allegedly proposed a deal. He would pay the employee $1 million to deliver malware to computer systems at the Gigafactory. Kriuchkov and his associates allegedly planned to extract data from the network and threaten to make it public if Tesla didn’t pay a ransom.”

LUCID TEASES POSSIBLE WORLD RECORD 1/4-MILE WITH AIR DREAM EDITION
“Lucid has released a teaser for its first sedan, the Air, indicating that it may have set a new electric vehicle world record before its highly-anticipated unveiling event on September 9th.” according to Joey at Teslarati: “The video did not reveal any specific time, but the quickly ticking timer that appears in the teaser goes as low as 10.48 seconds, but it is doubtful that this time is the lowest that the vehicle achieved. Lucid used the same style of video for the Air’s range unveiling, and that video only went as high as 441 miles. Lucid revealed the Air had 517 miles of range just four days later. The current world record for a quarter-mile for an electric sedan is held by the Tesla Model S, which completed a drag race in just 10.452 seconds at the Tulsa Raceway Park on May 17th, 2020. The Model S used Ludicrous Mode and the “Cheetah Stance” to record this time.”
The unveiling date is 9th of the 9th. So, 9.9 seconds?

LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT IS SELLING ITS FLEET OF BMW I3 VEHICLES
“Thereafter, BMW won a bid with LAPD to supply one hundred BMW i3s each year for three years starting in 2016. Fitted to the i3s were the base 22kWh battery pack, the Deka World interior package, and the standard 19″ aluminum wheels.” reports InsideEVs: “CBS Los Angeles reported some i3s that accumulated just several hundred miles making the whole proposition look more ineffective. If LAPD had around a dozen of these vehicles, the story probably would never have been brought to light, but LAPD had 200, $45,000 electric cars sitting in a parking garage collecting dust. New Century BMW, the dealer that handled the leases initially, is currently selling them as CPO models. some are priced around $15,000, unbeatable for an under warranty, lightly-driven electric car. The only issue that one may see is that some of these i3s were sitting, presumably for prolonged periods.”

AMAZON ORDERS OVER 1,800 ELECTRIC VANS FROM MERCEDES
“Amazon orders more than 1,800 electric transporters from Mercedes-Benz Vans. The order includes around 600 eVito and more than 1,200 eSprinter delivery vans, with Amazon expecting deliveries to begin this year. This is the largest order for electric vehicles from Mercedes transporter unit to date.” according to electrive: “The internet retailer is reportedly expecting 10,000 electric delivery vans to come through Rivian, a US start-up, by 2022. The total order is for no less than 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. In Europe, Amazon has relied on established manufacturers such as Mercedes. In Munich, they use 40 StreetScooters and ten Mercedes eVito. Amazon recently added 340 charging stations and operates more than 150 electric delivery vehicles every day at its distribution centre in Essen together with a Mercedes partner.”
RIMAC AUTOMOBILI WELCOMES NICO ROSBERG
“Rimac Automobili has welcomed 2016 Formula One World Champion Nico Rosberg to the family, as he joined the team in Croatia to customise his personal C_Two and test an advanced prototype. Nico’s announcement was captured in a video on his YouTube channel. Nico is one of just 150 people worldwide that will own a C_Two, having ordered his car in early 2019, following a viewing with the founder and CEO, Mate Rimac. Just recently, Nico visited the team – now numbering more than 700 – in Sveta Nedelja, Croatia, to decide on the bespoke configuration of his car, which will be delivered along with other customer cars in 2021.”

THE FIRST 700 VW ID.3 ELECTRIC CARS LAND IN NORWAY
“Volkswagen has confirmed that the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars have landed in Norway as deliveries of the important new electric vehicle are about to start. It has been in production since November of last year and they have manufactured thousands of them while they completed the vehicle’s software. The result is that they plan to start deliveries with a pretty large inventory in the coming weeks.” writes electrek: “Jürgen Stackmann, VW’s head of marketing, confirmed that today by sharing footage of the first 700 VW ID.3 electric cars landing in Norway, which is expected to be an important market for the electric car:”

PANAMA CANCELS ORDER FOR DIESEL BUSES, WILL PURCHASE 195 ELECTRIC BUSES INSTEAD
“MiBus has decided to cancel an order for 160 new diesel buses and purchase electric buses from BYD instead. In total, MiBus will spend $35 million to purchase 195 medium size electric buses for use in Panama City.” ays CleanTechnica: “In a telephone interview with the Panama Star, Luis Campaña, manager of MiBus, explained that the year long triual period demonstrated the value of regenerative braking and that the buses air conditioning systems were capable of managing the hot, humid environment of Panama. he MiBus representative clarified that his company originally thought of “presenting a proposal for the purchase of 35 medium or 10 meter electric buses, plus 160 diesel buses to partially replace the existing fleet,” but came to believe “it would be better to expand the framework and acquire 195 electric buses .””

WIND AND SOLAR ARE 30-50% CHEAPER THAN THOUGHT
“Electricity generated from wind and solar is 30-50% cheaper than previously thought, according to newly published UK government figures. The new estimates of the “levelised cost” of electricity, published this week by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), show that renewables are much cheaper than expected in the previous iteration of the report, published in 2016.” reports Simon Evans writing for CarbonBrief: “The new report is the government’s first public admission of the dramatic reductions in renewable costs in recent years. In 2013, the UK government estimated that an offshore windfarm opening in 2025 would generate electricity for £140/MWh. By 2016, this was revised down by 24%, to £107/MWh. The latest estimate puts the cost at just £57/MWh, another 47% reduction. The new estimates include similarly dramatic reductions for onshore wind and solar, with levelised costs in 2025 now thought to be some 50% lower than expected.” BEIS now expects offshore wind to become cheaper than onshore by the mid-2030s. This is primarily due to much larger turbine sizes, reaching 20 megawatts (MW) by 2040, up from 9MW today.
