Show #867

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 14th August 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

VOLKSWAGEN TO MAKE ELECTRIC CAR CELLS, BATTERY PACKS IN U.S.

“Volkswagen said it was expanding its Chattanooga factory in Tennessee to make electric vehicle cells and battery packs in the United States, alongside assembling electric vehicles. The company said it plans to break ground for a laboratory in Chattanooga to develop and test cells and battery packs for its upcoming car models assembled in the U.S., with the goal of a fully operational lab by spring 2021.” reports Autoblog: “Volkswagen’s plan to produce its own cells and battery packs for electric vehicles in the United States follows an emissions scandal at the company, which admitted to using illegal software to cheat pollution tests in the country.  Insourcing electric vehicle cells and battery packs reinforces Volkswagen as one of the most ambitious traditional carmakers in the electric vehicle domain, Credit Suisse analyst Dan Levy said.”

ID.3 IS A 4-SEATER

“VW does not yet seem to have the new electric car technology under control: Those who want the ID.3 with the large battery have to be content with only four seats. that’s what it says on the website of a portal that offers the ID.3 in cooperation with a VW dealership: The two currently available Pro S and Tour variants have “unfortunately only 4 seats”, it says there. On the other hand, no information can be found on the order pages of VW itself, neither under the technical data nor with the standard equipment of the ID.3″ says teslamag.de: “A Volkswagen spokesperson contacted us after this report was published. He confirmed that only four people are allowed to drive in the ID.3 and cited the total weight and the classification in the homologation as reasons. He also referred to the variants with smaller batteries that have five seats. VW is assuming that the ID.3 with the medium-sized battery (58 kilowatt hours, a little more than the smallest Tesla model) will be the volume model.”

What about similar sided cars on that platform. ID.4, Skoda enyaq, Seat Cupra el-born.

PORSCHE & CUSTOMCELLS CONSIDER BATTERY FACTORY IN GERMANY

“Porsche and the Fraunhofer spin-off Customcells apparently want to build a battery cell factory in Tübingen. The endeavour is still missing EU approval that would enable state funding. cell manufacturer Customcells is to develop battery cells with Porsche for the next generation of the VW subsidiary’s electric sports cars. The two partners have already founded the joint venture called Cellforce Group for this purpose, and production will be located in Tübingen, south of Stuttgart.” says electrive: “The project still has to gain approval from the EU whereby the project would be classified as an IPCEI project (Important Project of Common European Interest), which would enable state funding. So far, the IPCEI project has funded the planned battery cell production of the PSA subsidiary Opel in Kaiserslautern and the battery cell production of BMW in Parsdorf near Munich, which was announced a few weeks ago. In total, the German government intends to invest around three billion euros in various battery cell projects.”

FORD MUSTANG MACH-E RANGE FIGURES RUMORED TO INCREASE FOLLOWING EPA TESTING

“It’s believed that Ford will increase the Mach-E range ratings following official EPA testing that’s apparently being conducted now. Though the EPA still doesn’t have official figures listed for the range of any of the versions of the Mach-E, rumor has it that the initial figures released by Ford will be revised upwards.” says InsideEVs.

HYUNDAI KONA ELECTRIC SETS RANGE RECORD OF 1,026 KILOMETERS

Over the course of a three-day range mission, the pure electric subcompact SUVs each travelled 1,018.7, 1,024.1 and 1,026.0 kilometers (km), exceeding the goal of 1,000 km on a single battery charge. Each distance also represents a record in terms of 64 kWh battery capacity.

The nearly 35-hour test took place at Lausitzring, a racetrack in northeast Germany. Dekra, a European vehicle inspection company that has operated at Lausitzring since 2017, monitored the test process and vehicles, recording 36 driver changes.

. Each vehicle’s air conditioning and entertainment systems remained off, with available power used solely for propulsion. Only the daytime running lights remained on to comply with the legal requirements for road traffic.

The drive teams – one from the renowned German trade magazine Auto Bild and two from Hyundai Motor Deutschland – recorded an average speed between 29 and 31 km/h to reflect typical inner-city traffic speeds in Europe. On the third day, the vehicles managed to cover over 20 km with only 3 percent residual capacity. At zero percent charge, the vehicles continued to drive for several hundred meters before running out of power and coming to a stop.

WACKER NEUSON PRESENTS ELECTRIC MINI EXCAVATOR EZ17E

“Wacker Neuson, a German firm based in Munich, is expanding its zero-emission range to include the EZ17e electric mini excavator. The manufacturer now offers 12 electric construction machines in this product series.”The EZ17e is designed to operate for a whole working day without intermediate charging. If stationary activities permit, it can also be operated by cable and charged while working on power sources ranging from 100 to 415 volts. The operator can monitor how much he loads the site’s power supply system via a display and disconnect the excavator from the grid if necessary. Charging at 415 volts should take around four hours, according to the manufacturer. The battery also has its own heater to allow operation at low temperatures. Despite the power storage, the excavator is very compact and was designed as a zero-tail – i.e. without rear overhang.”
