Show #806

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 11th June 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA IS NOW WORLD’S MOST VALUABLE AUTOMAKER

“Elon Musk and Tesla have dethroned Toyota to become the world’s most valuable automaker. GM is roughly worth $41 billion, Ford at $27 billion and FCA has about a $20 billion market cap. For a moment, the market valued Tesla more than all three combined.” says Yahoo! News: “Just this week, Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said he thinks it still has “room to run further,” citing “game-changing” developments as his reason. The analyst lifted his price target to $1,000 from $800 and boosted his bull-case target to $1,500.”

Electrek’s take was that: “It’s hard to directly compare Tesla to other automakers because the company is more than an automaker due to its growing energy division and its tech-like approach to the automotive business. But most of its revenue currently comes from selling cars, which mostly makes the company an “automaker” on a market capitalization standpoint. To be fair, Tesla didn’t just achieve that through its own performance but also declines in valuation from virtually all other automakers. Toyota lost 7% of its value since the start of the year. The Japanese automaker lost as much as 20% of its value during the global pandemic, but it has still recovered most of that loss.”

Whilst Teslarati were feeling reflective: “Tesla is riding a wave of momentum that has taken it from a small, likely unsuccessful car startup that was plagued with issues in 2008, to the most valuable automaker in the world in 2020. Not only has Tesla established itself as the leader in American EV manufacturing, but the company has launched itself into an international powerhouse that has combined electric mobility with sustainable energy solutions to become an international sensation.”

Tesla (TSLA) becomes world’s most valuable automaker, hits $1,000 per share

Tesla becomes world’s most valuable “automaker”, but the story goes well beyond cars

ELON MUSK: IT’S TIME TO BRING THE TESLA SEMI TO VOLUME PRODUCTION

“In a new email to Tesla employees, Elon Musk wrote to that it’s time to start volume production of the Tesla Semi all-electric trucks. The news was broke by Reuters, but later Elon Musk confirmed it to be true on Twitter.” reports InsideEVs: “Tesla was busy with other projects, but now it seems it is the right time, especially since there are other companies interested in EV trucks and new hydrogen fuel cell counterparts from Nikola Motor are on the horizon. Elon Musk wrote also that both the battery and powertrain will be produced at the Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada, but there is no surprise here. The interesting thing is that “most of the other work probably occurring in other states”. So we basically don’t know yet where it will be produced. The company probably is still searching for the right site.”

Elon: “It’s time to go all out and bring the Tesla Semi to volume production. It’s been in limited production so far, which has allowed us to improve many aspects of the design. Production of the battery and powertrain would take place at Giga Nevada, with most of the other work probably occurring in other states.”

Jerome and I are very excited to work with you to bring this amazing product to market!””

Whilst Teslarati looks at how we got here: “What is rather interesting is that Tesla has placed the pieces for this battery endgame years ago. Even before it could prove that premium, well-designed electric vehicles are a viable business, Tesla pushed the idea of establishing a Gigafactory in Nevada that will be dedicated to the mass-production of battery cells. Four years ago, the company funded the work of a group of scientists led for the past 24 years by Jeff Dahn, a pioneer in lithium-ion battery development as well. These, as well as a number of other key pieces, seem to be coming together now, or at least in the near future.”

Elon Musk’s Tesla Semi update means that the battery that changes everything is ready

VW ID3 ORDERS FROM JUNE 17

The final timetable for the start of Volkswagen’s ID. family has been set: Binding orders for the 30,000 models making up the limited 1st Edition of the ID. 3 can be placed from June 17 in most European countries. As a token of thanks for their loyalty to the brand, Volkswagen is offering all pre-bookers wishing to take possession of their ID.3 1st as quickly as possible membership the 1st Mover Club. Delivery of the ID.3 1st to “First Movers” begins in early September.

ID.3 pre-bookers can choose between two different options: The first is delivery of their ID.3 1st in early September, combined with membership of the exclusive ID.3 1st Mover Club. This membership includes various customer benefits – and a software update for two outstanding digital functions at the beginning of next year. At market launch in September, the App Connect function and the distance feature in the head-up display will not yet have been activated.

ID.3 pre-bookers with a little more patience can choose the second option when signing the purchase agreement for their ID.3 1st – with a delivery date in the fourth quarter of 2020. When the keys are handed over to the customer, this later version will be equipped with all functions.

It will not only be possible to engage direct with customer enquiries, but will also enable Volkswagen to collect feedback on everyday experiences along with comments from ID.3 first drivers for use in further development. “To say thank you, all 1st Movers who are leasing their vehicles will not pay any leasing rates for the first three months”, Jürgen Stackmann said.

The first edition of the ID.3 has the larger 58 kWh battery which is driven by an electric motor at the rear axle. It generates 150 kW.

ID.4 SET FOR 2021 SPRING U.S. LAUNCH

The ID3’s September delivery date narrowly meets an end-of-summer deadline VW had set itself to start handing over the car to customers. Starting deliveries of a new model that lacks key functions is virtually unheard of for VW and reflects the internal pressure the automaker faced to get the car on the streets.” writes Automotive News Europe “The ID3 is primarily aimed at European customers who like hatchbacks. The U.S. will get the ID4 crossover, which will also be sold in Europe and China. VW said on Wednesday that U.S. deliveries of the ID4 will start around spring of next year.”

2021 MERCEDES-BENZ EQA SPIED WEARING LESS CAMOUFLAGE

“The Mercedes-Benz EQA electric city SUV has been spied wearing less camouflage, however details of the model’s global reveal and Australian future remain unclear. New images show the EQA – a full-electric model based on Mercedes-Benz GLA city SUV – with less camouflage than when it was teased in February completing winter testing in Sweden.” according to Car Advice: “The Mercedes-Benz EQA shares its platform with the GLA, however it receives different front and rear end styling. The EQA will join the EQC and EQB in Mercedes-Benz’s electric SUV family. A global reveal of the EQA is expected sometime later this year.”

FORD’S ELECTRIC F-150 WILL GO ON SALE IN 2022

“Ford has spent the last few years promising it will make an all-electric version of its extremely popular pickup truck, the F-150. Now the company is saying it will go on sale by the middle of 2022 — what’s expected to be the biggest year for new vehicle launches in decades, according to a new study from Bank of America Merrill Lynch.” reports The Verge: “Ford’s chief operating officer Jim Farley shared the news on Wednesday, but didn’t offer any further specifics about the truck in an interview with CNBC or during an appearance at a Deutsche Bank automotive conference. He did say that the release of the electric version of Ford’s Transit van has been pushed back a year to 2022, though.”

TESLA MODEL 3 COBALT-FREE LFP VERSION DETAILS

“While most automakers are still making excuses to delay the massification of electric cars, the Standard Range Plus version of the Tesla Model 3 made in China already has an extremely safe, durable, simple and cheap cobalt-free LFP battery from CATL and an impressive profit margin of 35 %.” says Push EVs looking into the technology: “Automakers that say they are losing money with their overpriced electric cars are either lying or doing it wrong. Maybe it’s both. In the more realistic WLTP test cycle the range should be around 351 km (218 miles). Unfortunately we still don’t know the capacity of the battery or cells. Some rumors suggest that the battery pack is made with 108 cells (108s1p). It’s suggested that CATL’s battery pack is either module-less or it has 4 modules and each module has 27 cells.”
