Show #775

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 11th May 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don’t have to.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

FERRARI PROTOTYPE SPIED POSSIBLY TESTING HYBRID POWERTRAIN

“Ferrari’s lineup is bigger than ever and it will further grow later this year with the launch of two new cars. The Prancing Horse has made it clear it will fully embrace electrification and we know for a fact they’ve been testing prototypes with a hybrid powertrain for quite a while. Our most recent encounter with a hybrid test vehicle was at the end of last month when the prototype pictured above was seen in Maranello.” says Motor1.com: “A new family of V6 engines was announced nearly two years ago, so we know it’s definitely coming. It would make sense to electrify the smallest powertrain in the lineup to obtain a greater combined output worthy of the Ferrari badge.”

How do we know Ferrari is going hybrid, the big yellow warning triangle stickers indicating high voltage aren’t  just there for show.

AUDI A6 STATION WAGON NOW AVAILABLE AS A PLUG-IN HYBRID

Following the A6 Sedan, the Audi full-size station wagon is now entering the market as a plug-in hybrid.  The new Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro has a 105kW electric motor integrated into a seven-speed S tronic gearbox, 14.1 kWh battery.

Permanently available all-wheel drive for an equally high level of traction and dynamic handling

The electric range of the Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro is up to 51 kilometers (31.7 mi) in the WLTP cycle.

50 percent company car tax reduction in Germany.

0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in 5.7 seconds. Its top speed is 250 km/h (155.3 mph) – in electric-only mode, the plug-in hybrid can reach a speed of up to 135 km/h (83.9 mph)

“EV” for all-electric driving, “Hybrid” for the efficient combination of both drive types and “Hold” to conserve the electrical energy available at any given time.

“Hybrid” mode, the predictive operating strategy ensures maximum efficiency and the maximum possible amount of electric driving. It controls the drivetrain so that the last stage of the journey before getting to the destination can be covered in all-electric mode and the battery is charged up beforehand via the combustion engine where necessary.

Customers can use the myAudi app to manage charging and pre-entry climate control even before they set off. The air conditioning system operates together with a highly efficient heat pump that uses the waste heat from the electrical drive components.

The myAudi app is equipped with a route planner that shows where the terminals are.

The base price for the Audi A6 Avant 55 TFSI e quattro is EUR 71.940.

2024 VOLVO XC100 RECHARGE: A SWEDISHLY STYLISH ELECTRIC FLAGSHIP

“Volvo’s renaissance launched with the reborn XC90 SUV—which will be the basis of Volvo’s new flagship and foray into the SUV “coupe” trend with the XC100.” says MotorTrend: “As a branding statement more than a gear hauler, the sleeker XC100 Recharge will then take over as Volvo’s style leader and be an altogether more indulgent offering. Expect four seats rather than five, comfort- and luxury-oriented suspension tuning, semiautonomous capabilities, and more extravagant design. Both the XC90 and XC100 will be built on Volvo’s next-generation SPA-II architecture, SPA-II is designed to support full electric vehicles, as well. And while the XC90 will be offered as both a traditional gas-powered vehicle with hybrid options and a Recharge electric model, the XC100 will be purely electric.”

TESLA SECURES LOAN IN CHINA FOR SHANGHAI PLANT

“Tesla has secured a further credit line of up to 4 billion yuan (around 565 million US dollars) from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China for the expansion of its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai.” reports electrive: “Tesla announced the credit in a statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Last year, Tesla concluded loan agreements with Chinese banks for up to 3.5 billion yuan (465 million euros) for the first phase of its China plant. Tesla may only use the funds for the expansion of automobile production at the Shanghai location. In addition to the hall already constructed for Model 3, Tesla is currently constructing a second building in which Model Y will be produced for the Chinese market.”

2022 CHEVROLET BOLT EUV: HERE’S WHAT WE KNOW

Motortrend has an update on the Bolt EUV: “Based on the bolt’s bev2 architecture, the bolt euv is stretched 3 inches between the wheels for more interior space and 5 to 6 inches overall. The Bolt is already tall, and we don’t expect the Bolt EUV to get any taller, but more upright styling will make it look more like an SUV with low ground clearance than a life-size car emoji. The longer wheelbase will make space for a larger battery than the standard Bolt’s 66-kWh pack, which would logically improve the range beyond the smaller car’s 259 miles. It will still, however, be front-wheel drive only, as there are no plans to add a motor to the rear axle. Chevy is addressing a number of our complaints about the current Bolt, giving the new Bolt and Bolt EUV better seats, an upgraded infotainment system, and a push-button gear selector.”

  • NO GM ULtium batteries.
  • YES to SuperCruise
  • Bolt starts at $37k before local, state, federal incentives

LG CHEM EDGES OUT PANASONIC BY EV BATTERY CAPACITY DEPLOYED IN 2020 Q1

In the first quarter of 2020, passenger vehicle cell suppliers deployed 20.5 GWh of battery capacity globally, down from 20.9 GWh during the first quarter of 2019 and 26.5 GWh in the fourth quarter, according to data from Adamas Intelligence’s EV Battery Capacity and Battery Metals Tracker.

After losing the top spot to LG Chem in January and February of 2020, Panasonic bounced back with a vengeance in March, deploying 3.8 GWh globally to LG Chem’s 2.2 GWh. Adamas Intelligence data shows that LG Chem deployed 6.07 GWh in the first quarter of 2020 whereas Panasonic deployed 6.05 GWh over the same period. Collectively, the duo was responsible for 60% of all passenger EV battery capacity deployed globally in the first quarter of 2020.

CHICAGO REQUIRES NEW RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION INCLUDE EV CHARGING CAPABILITIES

“The Chicago City Council on April 24 approved an ordinance requiring new construction of residential and commercial buildings of certain sizes to ensure at least 20% of any supplied parking spaces are ready for electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment to be installed.” writes UtilityDive: ” The new rules apply to residential buildings with five or more units and commercial buildings with 30 or more parking spaces. Consumer advocates say the ordinance makes Chicago a national leader in its efforts to increase adoption of emissions-free vehicles, and called for similar policies to be adopted more widely. “This is a giant step forward and it’s the kind of wise EV policy we need across Illinois,” Citizens Utility Board (CUB) Executive Director David Kolata said in a statement.”

OLEV EXTENDS EVHS INSTALLATION DATE FOR PREVIOUS GRANT FUNDING

“The Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) has announced that, due to coronavirus restrictions, it has extended the time-frame for installations of home charge points to receive a £500 grant to April 2021.” reports Zap Map: “The mid-March Budget announcement revealed a reduction in the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) grant from a maximum of £500 to up-to £350. This limit means that anyone that qualifies for the EVHS grant, and has applied for a charge point before 12th March 2020, has until the first week of April next year to get the full £500 off the charger.”
