Show #662

Today I’m publishing this bonus episode all about Elon Musk and Tesla’s Chinese launch of the locally made Model 3, plus the Model Y launch there too. Look out for the regular news episode for today in your podcast feed or on YouTube.

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 8th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA OPENS CHINESE PLANT AS ERA OF REAL COMPETITION BEGINS

“Musk presided over a ceremony on Tuesday at a new multibillion-dollar plant near Shanghai — its first outside the U.S. The American company handed over the first China-made Model 3 sedans to the public, a white sedan going to a man from the nearby city of Wuxi. Deliveries to employees began last week.” says Bloomberg today: “Musk also introduced the Model Y crossover for the Chinese market, saying that demand for the vehicle will probably outstrip all of Tesla’s other models combined. Other plans include forming a design-and-engineering center in China so that Tesla can eventually develop a new car from there, he said. Originally just a muddy plot about a 90-minute drive away from Shanghai’s city center, the China plant has quickly come online since it broke ground at the start of 2019. It took twice as long for Tesla’s Gigafactory near Reno, Nevada, to begin churning out batteries.”

ELON MUSK DID A DAD-DANCE STRIPTEASE ON STAGE AT TESLA’S NEW SHANGHAI GIGAFACTORY

“If you need something to startle you awake this morning, look no further: Tesla CEO Elon Musk has posted footage of himself stripteasing, dad-style, outside Tesla’s new Shanghai Gigafactory.” is how Business Insider reported today’s big talking point: “Footage of Musk dancing has also been posted on Twitter by members of the audience, which – unlike the clip posted by Musk – makes clear just how taken aback the watching crowd was. In a clip posted by Bloomberg’s Selina Wang, the audience positively gasps when Musk starts dancing.”

ELON MUSK DANCES LIKE NOBODY’S WATCHING AT TESLA EVENT IN CHINA

“The Tesla CEO was so happy, he started to dance. Or, at least we think that’s what this was. Musk got so wrapped up in the moment that he even shed his jacket when the music, “More Than You Know” by Axwell Ingrosso, got going.” says Gizmodo.

ELON MUSK FLAUNTS STRIPTEASE MOVES

“Elon Musk has celebrated the first delivery of cars from Tesla’s new factory in Shanghai by flying out to China and performing striptease moves in front of his own workers.” says Sky News UK: “At a ceremony celebrating the first deliveries of Tesla vehicles produced in China, the 48-year-old danced, threw off his clothes, and high-fived employees in the crowd. An initial batch of vehicles produced at the Tesla Gigafactory 3 were rolled out last month as the company began production in its first location outside of the US. The first Model 3s to come off the factory’s production line were delivered to Tesla employees on 30 December. The facility, which is the first wholly foreign-owned car plant in China, is intended to initially produce about 250,000 Model 3 and Model Y cars every year, as well as battery cells.”

CHINA-MADE TESLA HAS MORE ROOM FOR PRICE CUTS

“Shanghai-made Tesla still has room for further price cuts, said news portal ThePaper, citing a report from Industrial Securities on Sunday.” reported by China Daily: “The report noted that the made-in-China Model 3 is expected to lower the price to a minimum 197,000 yuan, after Tesla fully adopts a domestic supply chain in the future. The production cost of cars made in the new Shanghai gigafactory is about 20-28 percent lower than that in Tesla’s America factory, said the report from Industrial Securities. Tesla cut the starting price of its Shanghai-made Model 3 sedans by 9 percent on Friday, from 355,800 yuan to 323,800 yuan, according to the website.”
