Show #602

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 6th October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Hi Martin!

I heard you complain about the lack of electric vans. I have the same issue. That’s why I am building my electric camper van now, based on a 2013 VW Crafter – with the help of some pros, of course.

Just started, but the diesel engine is already history…

Will have a 75kwh battery, hopefully giving me a 200+km range. No fast charging so 🙁

And BTW: I could not disagree more with that BMW guy, who said that people won’t buy EVs if they cannot charge at home or at work. I live and work in a flat in Munich – less than a mile away from the BMW factory – and will street park and charge public. Getting juice is no longer an issue. It’s 2019 baby!

Thanks for your pod. I am enjoying every episode.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS

BRIAN WEATHERALL

I’d not named my cars before I had a leaf, but my first one with the Reg ending MLF was almost called MiLF, but a little worried the kids would ask questions it was instead called Hal ( of course after the 2001 a space odyssey computer)

Second LEAF is called Ruby (red being the best LEAF colour)

I’m surprised how many EV drivers name their cars and I guess it’s proof of the emotional connection some have, rather than it just being a too.

KYLE HODGSON

Furbie.

Because, when we walk up to it (with the key fob in hand) it’s “ears” (side mirrors really) open up to greet us, in a way that reminds us of the toy robot/teddy bear/alien from the late 90’s.

PETER BRYN

Haven’t named my PHEV, but my friend’s Leaf lovingly goes by Plugs.

DAN WREN

I own a Renault Zoe 22kw I haven’t personally named the vehicle but when we first purchased the vehicle my 7-year old daughter was so amazed by this car she named it Zoomy Zoe because she likes how it accelerates so the name has stuck. It’s has even gone as far as having the name put on the car mats I know that’s a bit sad but my daughter loves it. We are so impressed with this vehicle that we will never ever go back to fossil cars.

And thank you for all the hard work you do for everyone who listens to This podcast I listen every day

IAN GRIFFITHS (PATREON SUPPORTER)

I’m a big Everton FC fan & I’ve just taken delivery of my blue model 3.

I was going to call it ‘Blue Nose’ but it’s been called ‘Gwladys’ from the home-end stand at Goodison Park – Gwladys Street!

JON GIBBINS

My car is lovingly known as Piffle by the wife.

Something to do with the number plate apparently!

… alas, it’s a Honda Insight. A mere hybrid in a world of EVs.

TIM JAMES

never named a car but if I ever manage to get a Tesla I’ll probably call it  Franz…after Franz von Holzhausen.

MARK BUCKINGHAM

Hi Martyn, Kia Ora!  my cars name is it plate LETRIC

KENT

Yes, I’ve named both my electric cars, my Hyundai Kona is just ‘Kona’, as Kona is norwegian for wife, it’s kinda funny.

And my Model 3 is named ‘Navi’, as my dog is named Link, my robot vacuum is called Zelda, it was just fitting to name the TM3 Navi, since it’s blue and all 🙂 Zelda nerds will know! (although, my Navi is not as annoying as the Zelda Navi!)

MIKE

My 2017 Ioniq Electric is Carmen Electra.

LUKE

I’d never named a car before but when I first met my now wife I was driving a VW Golf with a stock number plate GMT24 so she called it Ben after Big Ben / Greenwich Mean Time 24 hours. We picked up our first EV (Kia Niro EV or e-Niro in the UK) with the number plate MKY296. She has now named it Micky.

BROCK

I’ve named my 2012 Chevy Volt “Carmen Electric” after Carmen Electra. It was the first name that came to mind.

PAUL RIDINGS

my car name is Stormfly after the dragon in “How to train your dragon”, this was because my kids really liked the films. Also after previously owning only really boring family cars, driving it does feel like flying on the back of a dragon!

SVEIN

Our EV name is Bye-BYE-OIL, which is also our license plate for our red model 3. It is spelled BBYEOIL. Most people firgure it out as intended, perhaps after thinking about it for just a bit.  Except one neighbour that  somehow still think is says Baby-Oil, and just can’t figure out why we would call our car that. 🙂

Andreas Juul Mikkelsen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

When we got our blue BMW i3 I named him Saint Elmo – or just Elmo amongst friends.

We felt that the blue BMW i3 was such a fun car to both look at and drive, that we thought of Elmo from Sesame Street and that it was an Electric car the ELmo was perfect. More to the name was the Saint Elmo’s Fire is a static election phenomena that occurs around objects like ship’s sails and wings of airplanes, so it made it even more perfect.

We love our Elmo and he is part of the family.

Thanks for a great show. Highly appreciated.

Frederik Leon Anlauf

my little i3 is named BOB, it’s also in the Numberplate as B for Berlin combined with OB. I think it’s the perfect name for an i3, it looks so funny it’s a BOB 😂 By the way a brillant car.

Owain

My wife calls my silver-brown Kia Soul “The Sideboard”. Most rude of her!

John Fruhwirth

My car is a Tesla Model S P90D and is my dream car.

I’ve  named it Blitzen with a sub heading of John’s Red Rocket.

DAVID TOOKER

We named out Tesla Model 3 ” ‘Ekolu” which is Hawaiian for “Three”. When we got our Oregon plates they had the word LAM in it. So now the full official name is “‘ Ekolu (Lammie Pie) “.

KARL CRAMER

My 2012 Chevrolet Volt was immediately named Voltron after the defender of the universe because I’m a hopeless geek.
