Show #599
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 3rd October 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
PORSCHE ADDS 500 MORE JOBS TO INCREASE PRODUCTION OF TAYCAN
“Porsche announced that the original production capacity of the Taycan (originally planned at 20,000 units annually) will be increased in “response to the great worldwide demand”.” says InsideEVs: “Taking into consideration 500 new jobs for the Taycan (on top of 1,500 announced previously) the increase might be to at least 25,000-30,000 annually.”
And from Porsche themselves: “”Taycan’s original production capacity was 20,000 units. This continues to be the requirement for the first year of production. By increasing its workforce by the end of the second quarter of 2020, Porsche is providing itself with the necessary flexibility to be able to produce more units if necessary. Porsche builds another 500 new jobs: The company increases production in Zuffenhausen for the first purely electrically powered sports car. This is Porsche’s response to the great worldwide demand for the electric sports car, which celebrated its world premiere at the beginning of September. With the Taycan, we are showing that e-mobility is by no means a job killer. Rather, we are underlining its future viability, especially in the sports car segment. In addition, more than 32,000 applications show how great the interest is in shaping the future of the sports car together with us.””

TESLA IS BUYING COMPUTER VISION START-UP DEEPSCALE
“Tesla is acquiring DeepScale, a computer vision start-up that could help it develop fully driverless vehicles, CNBC has learned. The deal could help Tesla’s goal to deliver cars with advanced driver-assistance systems that are good enough for owners to rent them out as “robotaxis” on an Uber-like platform without drivers. However, like all automakers, Tesla is limited by the computational resources it can build into its vehicles.” says Lora Kolodny for CNBC: “DeepScale’s technology was designed to help automakers use low-wattage processors, which are standard in most cars, to power very accurate computer vision. These processors work with sensors, mapping, planning and control systems, to allow cars to make sense of what’s going on around them. This week, DeepScale CEO Forrest Iandola joined Tesla as a senior staff machine learning scientist, according to an announcement he posted on his LinkedIn page.”

THE POLESTAR 2 WILL COST FIFTY GRAND
“The Polestar 2 will cost £49,900 when it’s launched next year. That’s £2,900 more than the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, and £2,100 less than the Model 3 Performance.” according to Top Gear: “So hopes are high for the 2, the company’s first all-electric car. It’s not all about numbers, of course, but here they are anyway: the 2 claims a 311-mile range from its 78kWh battery, the equivalent of 402bhp and a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds. Meanwhile its arch rival, the Long Range Model 3, claims a 348-mile range and 0-62mph in 4.4 seconds.”

BMW EXEC SAYS CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE IS HOLDING BACK EV ADOPTION
“As automakers continue to tout their collective transition to electric vehicles, not much is happening. Most have missed deadlines and have nothing to show for it. BMW is about as bad as it gets in terms of actually making EV plans a reality. Its EV sales are way down and it has even stopped reporting that number. Instead, it just tells us each month how much worse the picture is via a percentage decrease.” according to InsideEVs.
BMW director of global research cooperation Stephan Neugebauer: “”No one will buy an electric car if you can’t charge it near your work or home. It’s as simple as that. That is why we must continue our partnership with the European Union. Except that we no longer need to focus solely on the actual development of the car itself, as has been mainly the case in recent years. We should focus on cooperation with others, like energy companies and municipalities.”
“You just have to be able to drive somewhere and stick the plug into a socket so that you can charge a car. That’s my vision for the future.”

AUDI PLANNING AT LEAST THREE MEB-BASED ELECTRIC CARS
“Audi will build at least three electric cars on the modular MEB platform developed by parent company Volkswagen. The three battery-powered models are part of an ongoing, 20-car EV offensive that started with the E-Tron in 2018, and that the firm hopes to complete by 2025.” reports AutoBLog: “While the Q4 is the only MEB-based Audi that has been shown to the public, the company confirmed at least two more are on their way. In Europe, the Q4 E-Tron will come standard with a single, rear-mounted electric motor. Dual-motor all-wheel drive will be available at an extra cost.”

IONITY ALREADY INSTALLED 150 CHARGING STATIONS, ELECTRIFY AMERICA 300
“The two major ultra-fast charging networks – IONITY in Europe and Electrify America in the U.S. – that aim for a power level of up to 350 kW, recently achieved new milestones. IONITY installed its 150th CCS Combo 2 station out of 400 planned by the end of 2020. An additional 64 are under construction.” reports InsideEVs :”The total number of IONITY chargers will be up to 2,400 chargers by the end of 2020, which translates to an average of six per station. Electrify America charging network is already two times bigger and includes 301 stations (with 1,047 CCS1, 301 CCS1-CHAdeMO and 44 AC Level 2 stalls) with 159 “Coming soon”. Just like in the case of IONITY, the chargers will be ready for 800 V battery systems.”
