Show #550

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 13th August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA MODEL 3 PERFORMANCE ENDURES 31 HARD LAUNCHES WITH NO THROTTLING

“Tesla owner Patrick Lawson opted to see if his vehicle, a Tesla Model 3 Performance, could accomplish multiple max power launches without losing power. By the 10th 0-60 mph test, Lawson noted that he was already feeling the effects of the Model 3’s multiple hard launches. The father and son duo continued over the next 30 minutes, hitting 31 consecutive launches in the Model 3. At that point, Lawson noted that his son was probably good for about 10 more launches, but that was about all he could handle. Interestingly, the Model 3 Performance, just like the Porsche Taycan Turbo, did not throttle its power at all. The 31st launch registered a 0-60 mph time of 3.11 seconds, which is in the same territory as the Taycan Turbo.” reports Teslarati: “Lawson’s test did not involve the same parameters as Fully Charged’s test of Porsche’s all-electric car. The Taycan Turbo, for one, performed 26 runs that topped up at speeds of 200 kph (124 mph), while Lawson’s Model 3 Performance test only involved 31 0-60/0-70 mph runs.”

MODEL 3 CHECKOUT OPENS IN AUSTRALIA,

“Australian drivers are now able to pay and finalise orders for Tesla’s Model 3 electric sedan, with the Californian EV maker updating the local website on Tuesday to allow payment, select pickup and delivery locations and confirm trade-ins.” according to The Driven: “While it is unknown exactly how many Australians reserved and are now finalising orders for the world’s best-selling electric car, two polls conducted by Tesla fans in Australia have uncovered a similar phenomenon to buying decisions for the Model 3 as in the US, known as the “Tesla Stretch”. There are currently only a handful of electric vehicles available in Australia and registered EVs accounting for less than 1% of our national fleet, but the arrival of the Model 3 (customer models of which could be arriving in Australia as soon as tomorrow) has the potential to create the tipping point needed for EV uptake to finally become a real phenomenon here.”

275-MILE POLESTAR 2 MAKES U.S. PUBLIC DEBUT IN SAN FRANCISCO

“The Polestar 2 is the first fully electric vehicle from Polestar cars. With ongoing launch events in the first seven North American cities that Polestar vehicles will be available, reservation and prospective owners got their first up-close look at the new car. Polestar vehicles will initially be available in four cities in the US, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego and three Canadian cities, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal starting in late 2019.” reports InsideEVs:” The Polestar 2 has also been available for online reservation since early in 2019. Those that placed an order or expressed interest were invited to get their first hands-on exposure to the new BEV. At the San Francisco event at the SF Museum of Modern Art, hundreds of reservation holders packed the venue to see the Polestar 2 up close. Polestar 2 deliveries in the seven initial geographies will start in Q2 2020. Polestar availability will expand nationally over time.”

DOMINO’S WILL USE E-BIKES TO DELIVER PIZZAS ACROSS THE US

“Domino’s Pizza is once again adopting cutting edge delivery vehicles, although you’re much more likely to see these ones in action. In the wake of successful tests, the restaurant chain is launching a US-wide e-bike delivery program that will give stores the choice of using custom Rad Power e-bikes to carry pizza.” reports Engadget: “They’re typical electric two-wheelers at their heart with motors that assist pedaling for 25 to 40 miles on a charge with a 20MPH top speed, but they also include front and rear insulated cargo spaces that hold a combined 12 large pizzas. A delivery person could make several stops before having to cycle back to home base.”

NEW BMW 330E PHEV FEATURES 50% BOOST IN ALL-ELECTRIC RANGE TO 41 MILES; XTRABOOST DEBUT

The new BMW 330e plug-in hybrid features the latest generation of BMW eDrive technology paired with a four-cylinder gasoline engine. Making its debut appearance in a BMW, the standard-fitted XtraBoost raises the system output of the plug-in hybrid to a maximum 215 kW/292 hp.

The all-electric range is more than 50% greater than that of its predecessor—66 kilometers (41 miles) (WLTP) is possible with zero tailpipe emissions. Fuel consumption and emissions are down by more than 15% on the levels of the predecessor model.

A new feature—included as standard in the new BMW 330e Sedan—is XtraBoost. The driver can quickly bring XtraBoost into play by activating SPORT mode with the Driving Experience Control switch. A vigorous stamp on the accelerator unleashes an additional 30 kW/40 hp on top of the combined 185 kW/252 hp already generated by the combination of electric motor and combustion engine; XtraBoost keeps it on tap for up to 10 seconds.

GM, VW SAY THEY WON’T BUILD HYBRIDS OR PLUG-IN HYBRIDS, ONLY BATTERY ELECTRIC CARS

GM president Mark Ruess told investors recently, “Hybrids are just countermeasures to an ICE. You can’t spend money to force the customer to carry around extra stuff they may not need. Or, you can spend your money on getting the real answer, which is providing the customer a zero emissions, sustainable, affordable solution.”

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Reuss amplified on his remarks. “If I had a dollar more to invest, would I spend it on a hybrid? Or would I spend it on the answer that we all know is going to happen, and get there faster and better than anybody else?”

Jalopnik points out that Volkswagen, with its commitment to its new MEB chassis for battery electric cars, is also not interested in making plug-in hybrid cars. Its ID 3 5-door sedan should debut later this year in Europe, while the ID Crozz will appear in the US in 2021 followed by the ID Buzz in 2022.

It also notes that Ford and Toyota are both committed to plug-in hybrid technology, setting up a clash of technologies that will play out in coming years

  1. Hi Martin,

Since you told us yesterday about the ship carrying the first Model 3s to Australia this week, I thought you might be interested that the very same ship popped into Auckland on the way to drop our first Model 3s to us. I haven’t heard a delivery date yet, but it must be inside 2 weeks now. Very excited!! Thanks for your work. I’m very glad I found you!

    Geoff
