Show #548
Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 4th August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
FREE UNLIMITED SUPERCHARGING IS BACK FOR TESLA MODEL S & MODEL X
“When we checked the Tesla online design studio today, we saw that the Model S and Model X are now offered with Free Unlimited Supercharging again. Worldwide.” says Mark at InsideEVs: “The return of the feature means that the new buyers will be able to use Superchargers on long-distance travel free of charge. Something that the Tesla Model 3 buyers can’t enjoy. The Free Unlimited Supercharging was included in new Model S/X offer from the start for several years, but then Tesla removed it, using it from time to time as a promotion in the referral program or used Model S/X sales. Tesla probably needs to increase Model S/X sales until at least the launch of the Model Y, which combined with the Model 3, could bring enough volume and revenues to maybe finally provide for significantly upgrading the Model S/X. As of now, Model S/X batteries accept up to 150 kW of charging power (compared to up to 250 kW in the Model 3). Supercharging will be slower but free.”

Nissan LEAF, Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-PACE not in the top 5.
InsideEVs said: “We had expected sales to increase in June with more LEAF Plus availability. However, that was not the case as sales again declined. In June, Nissan sold just 1,156 LEAFs. Now, with July behind us, we can report that Nissan sold only 938 LEAFs in the U.S. last month. Though the automaker doesn’t provide breakouts for the normal LEAF and LEAF Plus, we assume some (a small, but rising number) may be of the latter. Elsewhere around the globe, LEAF sales are mostly rising with the intro of the longer-range LEAF, but the same can’t be said for here in the U.S. with sales now again dropping out of the four-digit range.”

KIA IS BANKING ON BEVS FOR CO2 TARGETS
“Kia wants to achieve the European CO2 emission targets with a strategy focusing on battery-electric cars. In an interview Emilio Herrera, Chief Operating Officer of Kia Europe, gave interesting insights into the plan, including “emergency” options.” says electrive: “According to Herrera, Kia will have to sell 40,000 electric cars in Europe in 2020 alone in order to achieve the CO2 target. Kia would still benefit from the Supercredit system: By 2020, cars that emit less than 50 grams of CO2 per kilometre will be counted as two vehicles. In 2021 the factor will fall to 1.67, in 2022 to 1.33. For this year Herrera estimates EV sales at 16,000 vehicles in Europe – 12,000 e-Niro and 4,000 e-Soul. The problem is that there is not enough supply from the Korean plants. “
PORTUGAL BAGS LOWEST-COST SOLAR BID IN THE WORLD
“The Portuguese energy secretariat has secured 1.15 GW of solar development at an average cost of €20.33 ($22.53 per megawatt-hour), representing an investment of about €800 million or $887 million.” reports Clean Technica: “One of the bids was made at €14.76/MWh ($16.44/MWh), which was declared a new world record for low solar bidding, according to Portugal’s Journal Económico. The secretariat had placed a €45/kWh ceiling on bidding.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS
I felt that we will always have those who are a bit geeky/nerdy when it comes to EV’s and I think there will always be groups even when they become the main means of transport in the world. New and changing technology coupled with new car arrivals will always mean there will be something to chat about.
DARREN SANT
I believe the camaraderie has never been stronger. Not only are there more clubs but all of the clubs talk to each other, help each other and share resources. People like Neil Roberts, who has always been helpful since day 1 when I started the Yorkshire EV Club, people like Neil are helping others to drive their clubs forward and recruit new members and educate new people on EVs.
In fact the community is so strong that in the last week a disgruntled and jealous outsider recently referred to us as a cult! The best praise I can think of. #Viva La Ev
DAVID NYE
Is there still a camaraderie between EV drivers?
In my opinion, most certainly. There are exceptions of course, which is always the case, but a large majority of people with EV’s who are like minded, will say hello and have a chat if you, and they, have the time. It will of course wane with time as they become more mainstream, but that is ages away yet.
PETER JAMES ROBERTS
Yes there is definitely still a camaraderie among EV drivers just look at the growth of EV groups in the UK this year and the way we rally around when one of our family is Ill…. Mind you there is that one guy who tends to stick a mike in your face whenever he can….. But we’re an inclusive group.
JOHN FRUHWIRTH
Yes, there is still camaraderie in the EV community. Not only is our Tesla Owners Club flourishing and growing, but, When I encounter other EV owners on the road, we wave to each other and light up our faces with that EV smile.
DOUG VOWLES
Yes, there is camaraderie, as there is in many small “outsider” groups. But I look forward to the day when there isn’t the same camaraderie. When electric cars are ubiquitous, and normal, and expected. When special interest groups are not needed to solve problems and answer questions that should be easily answered by dealer networks, or whatever replaces them. Perhaps then we’ll speak of the camaraderie of fossil burners who get together occasionally for old times sake, and to do a few laps, providing of course, that they have the appropriate permits…
