Show #545

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 1st August 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Thank you to R W Savage for becoming a Producer: “I really admire your dedication to producing a high quality show EVERY DAY. The new connection with Avid Technology is also very promising. Congratulations.”

And thank you to Daniel Milford who came to the end of his support on Tuesday. 11 months is incredible, Daniel was one of the first Patrons of this show.

A text message sent to one of my listeners from Tesla: “Tesla Update – Great News! Your Model 3 will be arriving earlier than expected. Your estimated delivery window is between 7/8 and 20/8 in London, Heathrow. You invoice will be available shortly, please prepare for payment.”

VW ID CROZZ – MORE SPY SHOTS

“2019 will be the year when Volkswagen will launch its first mass-production all-electric vehicle. Dubbed the ID.3, it’s a compact hatch, roughly the size of the current Golf, which will be joined by a lifted crossover, also part of the I.D. family. The vehicle in question was previewed with a concept back in 2017 and is now making its first appearance on public roads through these spy photos.” says Motor1.com: “As far as we can tell, the electric crossover will be positioned between Tiguan and Tiguan Allspace in terms of exterior dimensions with a bit more room in the cabin compared to the former. While the prototype confirms the production model will follow the design language of the concept, there are several major differences between the two. The production I.D. Crozz (name not confirmed) will share its architecture with the ID.3. The MEB platform will be used as a foundation for the all-wheel-drive SUV, which will be powered by two electric motors, one for each axle. According to preliminary information, the electric powertrain will have a combined output of more than 300 horsepower (224 kilowatts). A large battery pack will provide a range of approximately 310 miles (500 kilometers) between two charges with a possible fast-charging function, recovering up to 80 percent of the energy in 30 minutes using a 150-kW charger. It’s already been confirmed for a launch in the United States. Production will reportedly take place at VW’s Emden factory in Germany.”

MG EXPERIENCES UNPRECEDENTED DEMAND FOR ZS EV: 1,000 ALREADY ORDERED

“Within two weeks, MG has received 1,000 orders (with a fully refundable £500 deposit) for its all-new ZS EV in the UK.” reports InsideEVs: “High demand seems to be directly related to the value proposition with an entry-level price of £21,495 (plus a free home charging station). MG decided to extend the promotion for another 1,000 orders, but this time without home charging station and advises you to act quickly (as the standard price will be £3,500 higher).”

From MG: “MG Motor UK has smashed its new car pre-sales records by securing 1,000 orders for its sensational MG ZS EV in just two weeks. Having officially launched the car to the press and public on 17th July, MG has experienced unprecedented demand as customers raced to be one of the first 1,000 retail customers to snap up the high-tech electric SUV from just £21,495.”

The first 1,000 retail customers were able to benefit from the sensational £21,495 launch price after MG matched the government’s £3,500 plug-in car grant with a £3,500 MG Grant of its own. MG is pleased to announce that the next 1,000 retail customers will also receive the MG Grant, ensuring that the £21,495 launch price will continue. The first 1,000 customers also received a complimentary home charging unit – an offer which will not be continuing – ensuring that those who were quick off the mark secured the best deal.”

RUMOR: FUTURE BMW 7 SERIES GOES ELECTRIC

“One of the biggest projects in Munich this year focuses on the next-generation BMW 7 Series. The luxurious limousine is seen as a reboot for the design language and one of the first vehicles to show us new design implementations, both inside and outside the vehicle. Yet, the G70 7 Series story will be much bigger than its design. For the first time ever, BMW will offer an all-electric 7 Series model.” reports BMW Blog: “Dubbed, so far, as the i7, the new EV limousine is based on the fifth generation platform which allows for both ICE and EVs. We don’t know the full details yet, but sources say that the capacity of the battery pack could start at 80 kWh (just like the i4) and go higher than 120 kWh. BMW is already working on its next-level batteries, the fifth-generation version offering even higher density than before. In real life, the range of the i7, with its largest battery pack, could travel as far as 700 km on a single charge.”

JAGUAR I-PACE DEALER INVENTORY IN U.S. HITS 6-MONTH SUPPLY

“Jaguar I-PACE dealer inventory in the U.S. is now comparable to about six months of sales. The Jaguar I-PACE sales both in the U.S. and globally regularly averages above 10% of overall sales of the brand, but many wonder about the long-term demand.” reports InsideEVs: ” During the first six months of this year, Jaguar sold some 9,077 I-PACE, including 1,309 in the U.S., but according to the latest news, dealers in the U.S. have 1,338 I-PACE in inventory. That would be worth six months of sales of a car that has been available for just 9 months.’ This, combined with significant discounts below MSRP, raises a question about the real demand for the 2019 World Car of the Year.”

GET READY FOR THE FIRST EVTOL CERTIFICATION RULES

“A first stab at clarifying how electric and hybrid vertical take-off & landing (eVTOL) and conventional electric and hybrid aircraft (eCTOL) will interact in our urban air mobility future was recently made by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA). It calls the first eVTOL rule “the first building block to enable the safe operation of hybrid and electrical VTOL aircraft.”” according to CleanTechnica: “This new special condition covers eVTOL aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight of 3,175 kilograms (7,000 lb) carrying up to 9 passengers and using lift/thrust units for powered lift and control.”

$400 STARK DRIVE FAT TIRE ELECTRIC BIKE TESTED ON RIGOROUS COMMUTE

“Stark is trying to be the first company to provide an electric bicycle to the masses for under $400. That in itself is a difficult undertaking considering a quality conventional bicycle can far exceed that price point even for a beginner bike.” says InsideEVs: “The bike has five levels of power for the electric assist. Level 5 is rather impressive, but for my 12-mile round trip commute, I kept it in 1 or 2. The components are rather entry level which is to be expected for the price point. Where the Stark really shined was the ride home. After a 10 hour shift at work, I was tired and faced with a 6-mile return trip in 13 mph headwinds. The bike, set to level 3, made the ride home surprisingly enjoyable. With my more aggressive riding style, I got about 18 miles of range from a full charge.”

TESLA ABANDONED OVER $60 MILLION WORTH OF R&D PROJECTS LAST QUARTER

“Tesla confirmed in a new filing this week that it abandoned over $60 million worth of research and development efforts, but the automaker didn’t disclose specific projects.” writes Electrek: “Update: Tesla says that it is related to solar and energy products.”

NO HUMAN NEEDED: ELECTRIFY AMERICA PLANS ROBOTIC EV CHARGING

“Electrify America and Stable announce collaboration to deploy the world’s first commercial robotic DC fast-charging facility in San Francisco, to be used for autonomous electric vehicle fleets.”according to InsideEVs: “As a part of Electrify America’s Cycle 2 plans, the company announced plans to conductautonomous charging demonstrations to better understand the optimal charging site design, hardware and back-end solutions. Information from this first site will also help both companies evaluate appropriate business models for different autonomous fleet holders across various locations at commercial scale.”

USA: GRANTS AWARDED FOR ELECTRIC BUSES AND INFRASTRUCTURE

“As part of the Low- or No-Emission (Low-No) Grant program, the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) just announced $84.9 million in grant selections. Through the program, 38 different projects in 38 states will each receive funding for either fuel cell or battery-electric bus projects and their relevant infrastructure.” says Electrive: “In the different projects, the funds are being allocated for the purchase of new vehicles, the purchase and/or installation or upgrading of charging systems. The battery-electric buses that are purchased or leased through these projects are supported by a combination of on-route overhead charging and plug-in depot chargers.”
