Show #544

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 31st July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

GERMAN FINANCE MINISTER ANNOUNCES BILLIONS IN EV SUBSIDIES

“German Federal Finance Minister Olaf Scholz has introduced a tax package worth billions into the cabinet to promote electric mobility. The bill provides for an extension of existing subsidies in order to create planning security.” says electrive from a german translation: “The bill, which was passed by the cabinet today and is to be implemented by the end of the year, provides for the renewal of tax incentives for electric cars and plug-in hybrids as company cars to be extended beyond the end of 2021 to the year 2030. Instead of taxing one per cent of the list price per month as a pecuniary advantage, the rate of 0.5 per cent has been halved for electric and hybrid vehicles. The tax-free charging at the workplace will also be extended: if the employer allows employees to charge the car for free at the workplace, it will remain tax-free until 2030. The same applies if employees are given a company charging device.”

NISSAN WILL AXE 10 PERCENT OF ITS PRODUCTS FOLLOWING A CATASTROPHIC FIRST HALF OF 2019

“Nissan has had a rough go at the whole making and selling cars thing this year, as evidenced by the company’s June financial statement released Tuesday afternoon and covered by Automotive News.” The report indicates that Nissan’s global production shrank by 10.9 percent in the first half of calendar year 2019, as compared to the same period in the prior year. Similarly, global vehicle sales are down 7.9 percent, and total exports from Japan are down 17.8 percent. Nissan says that it is investing money to be ahead of the curve in the electrified and full EV field. It is also spending gobs of capital on advancing and rolling out driver assistance systems under the ProPILOT moniker, and investments in Google’s Waymo autonomous driving unit.”

TESLA MODEL 3 GETS 5-STAR RATING FROM ANCAP

“Tesla Model 3 has received 5- star safety rating from ANCAP, which applies to all Australian and New Zealand variants of the car.

According to the press release, Model 3 achieved strong results in both areas – occupant protection and active collision avoidance:

Adult Occupant Protection – 96%

Child Occupant Protection – 87%

Vulnerable Road User Protection – 74%

Safety Assist – 94% (highest result ever)”

ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Mr James Goodwin said: “This is an impressive result, and great to see electric vehicles continuing to prioritise safety. It is encouraging to see Tesla give equal attention to the active safety systems and technologies on board as well as the safety fundamentals through the structure and restraints,

I-PACE DRIVERS ONLY NEED TWO CHARGES A WEEK

“Almost 90% of potential Jaguar I-Pace owners could cover their weekly mileage with a maximum of two charges per week, according to data gathered by the company’s Go I-Pace app.” reports Chris at NextGreenCar: “The app measures daily car use, and helps show users how an I-Pace would fit their driving needs. Information from those already using the system show that 87% of drivers would only need two full charges a week to cover their required mileage, while 52% of drivers would only need to charge once a week.

More than 35,000 trips have been logged by the app, with an average user covering 216 miles per week, and an average journey of 8.4 miles. Jaguar’s I-Pace has a WLTP range of 292 miles on a single charge.”

FIRST PICTURE OF TESLA’S NEW HARDWARE 3 SELF-DRIVING COMPUTER IN THE WILD

“Tesla’s new ‘Hardware 3’ Autopilot computer meant to enable full self-driving capability has been spotted and photographed in the wild for the first time.

Earlier this year, Tesla launched its Full Self-Driving computer claiming that it is ‘objectively the best chip in the world’.” says Fred at Electrek: “Tesla said that the new computer was in all new Model S and Model X since March (start around March 20th) and in all new Model 3 vehicles since April (starting around April 12th). However, it looks like no one has been willing to open up their car and confirm it until now. A Tesla hacker called ‘green’, who has been known to bring us some impressive visualization of what Tesla Autopilot can see, shared what could be the first image of the Tesla Autopilot Hardware 3.0 computer. Tesla has also been promising retrofits for owners with Autopilot Hardware 2.0 or 2.5 and the Full Self-Driving Package.”

RUMORMILL: BMW INEXT TO BECOME I6 WITH THREE VERSIONS

“According to Automobilemag, the upcoming BMW iNEXT (scheduled for 2021) will be available as the i6 in three battery/powertrain versions priced between €72,000 and €110,000 before options.” pick up InsideEVs today: “Rumors say that the battery pack capacity will be 63 kWh, 92 kWh or 103 kWh or even 115 kWh if there is a special i6S version. The expected range of 285-375 miles (459-603 km) seems to be on par with the over 600 km (372 miles) of WLTP range announced previously by BMW. The base version will be rear-wheel drive, while all the other options all-wheel drive. The top of the line i6 will accelerate 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.8 seconds!”

BAIC SUBSIDIARY BJEV DEVELOPING 6 NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLES ON 3 NEW PLATFORMS

“Chinese automotive manufacturer BAIC announced that its EV subsidiary, BJEV, is working on six new fully electric models based on three new BEV platforms by 2021. The new vehicles are expected to be primarily sedans, SUVs, and vans, but the firm is playing this one very close to the chest, with little additional detail beyond that.” says CleanTechnica: “BAIC BJEV commissioned a new 2 billion yuan ($291 million), 50,000 square meter (538,000 square foot) development facility established along with 14 other partners in the space, including automotive veteran vehicle builder Magna, BAIC investor Daimler, battery titan CATL, and Huawei Technologies.”

TESLA TO ALLOW MCU UPGRADE FOR OLDER MODEL

“While responding to a Tesla owner who stated that he would be happy to pay for an MCU and LTE upgrade for his vehicle, Musk responded that it would indeed be possible to retrofit older Model S and X units with company’s newer MCUs. ” says Teslarati: “Providing MCU upgrade options for older Model S and Model X will further emphasize the idea that Teslas are vehicles that only improve over time. It would, for one, allow even the company’s older vehicles to gain access to some of the newest features found in cars produced today, including the growing library of titles in the Tesla Arcade.

MCUs in Model S and Model X vehicles produced prior to March 2018 are equipped with 2011-era NVIDIA Tegra-3 chips, which worked well for the vehicles’ basic features but lacked in smoothness and speed compared to the Model 3’s Intel-powered MCU. Tesla introduced a newer, faster MCU for the Model S and Model X in March 2018, partly as a way to ensure that the media units of its vehicle lineup share the same speed and performance. “

ELECTRIC TAXIS HAVE SAVED LONDON CABBIES £3.85M ON FUEL COSTS, LEVC CLAIMS

“LEVC claims its electric black taxis have helped save cabbies a collective £3.85m on fuel costs since first launching in London last year, with the manufacturer today prepared to celebrate the rollout of its 2,500th plug-in vehicle on UK roads.” writes Business Green: “The Chinese-owned firm said its TX range-extender electric-hybrid taxis had proved a big hit with cabbies since first launching on London’s streets in January 2018, achieving a 10 per cent market share to date. There are now 2,500 TX black cabs operating in the UK, according to LEVC, each of which boasts a small combustion engine alongside a range extender powertrain that allows it to run in full electric mode for up to 80 miles allowing the vehicle to cut air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in dense urban areas.”
