Show #543

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 30th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

Morten Grove @mortenlund89: “#TriumphAce seems to be on track for a Friday night arrival at Zeebrugge, Belgium with a shipment Tesla cars containing many #RHD #Model3.”

PORSCHE TAYCAN PRE ORDERS SOAR ABOVE 30,000

From Motor1: “The number of pre-orders for Porsche Taycan increased from more than 20,000 reported a few months ago to over 30,000. The news comes from German Handelsblatt magazine, who spoke with production boss Albrecht Reimold and HR director Andreas Haffner. Interestingly, Porsche received more pre-orders on the Taycan than Volkswagen did for the ID.3.The unveiling of the production Porsche Taycan is scheduled for September 4. From then on we will see whether Porsche’s attempt to become one of the top players in the high-end all-electric segment is successful.”

TESLA SLASHES PRICE OF ‘FULL SELF-DRIVING’ PACKAGE

“Tesla has slashed the price of its “Full Self-Driving” package upgrade for owners who currently have the Enhanced Autopilot package.” reports Fred at Electrek: “Earlier this year, they killed the Enhanced Autopilot package and unbundled some features to create a base Autopilot package, which they made standard on all Tesla vehicles. Since May, any Tesla owner can now upgrade to the Full Self-Driving package for $6,000, but the automaker reserved the right to still increase the price in the future. It caused a problem for Tesla owners with the Enhanced Autopilot package, because if they wanted to update to the Full Self-Driving Package, they had to pay more, because Tesla added features inside the package that they already paid for in the Enhanced Autopilot package. Today, Tesla followed through and reduced the price of the Full Self-Driving Package to $3,000 for people who have the Enhanced Autopilot package”

TESLA CRITIC AND ‘SHARK TANK’ JUDGE KEVIN O’LEARY REVERSES COURSE

“Legendary Canadian businessman and longtime Shark Tank Judge Kevin O’Leary, who previously remarked that he dislikes Tesla stock (NASDAQ:TSLA), has changed his tune on the electric car maker’s shares. In an appearance on CNBC, O’Leary stated that he personally bought some Tesla shares recently” says Simon at Teslarati.

Have a listen to his talking about his experiences going to racing events and seeing the people who work on electric racing cars:

And wait for the end. Here’s someone investing their own money because of the huge impact Tesla is making, making that decision based on his own personal experiences, and yet CNBC can’t resist kicking him with “that’s a random reason”. Actually, if you’re an investor and you invest in what you believe in, that’s not random, that’s smart!

CONSUMER REPORTS SAYS PEOPLE WANT EVS, AUTOMAKERS DISAGREE

“If there’s one thing the Big Auto can agree on, it’s that nobody wants to buy electric vehicles. In June, when BMW Director of Development Klaus Frölich said, “There are no customer requests for BEVs – none,” it made a splash in the press only because of the ironic fact that he said it at an event where the company announced plans to build 25 new plug-in models by 2025 (as reported by Forbes). Execs at major automakers express similar sentiments on a regular basis.” says InsideEVs: “A recent survey, conducted by Consumer Reports (CR) and the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), found that 63 percent of prospective car buyers in the US have at least some interest in EVs. The survey respondents consisted of a nationally representative sample of 1,659 adults who are considering purchasing or leasing a new or used vehicle within the next two years. Apparently, BMW and other automakers haven’t been talking to these folks, because 31 percent of them said they would consider an EV for their next purchase, 27 percent would consider one “at some point,” and 5 percent said they are definitely planning on buying or leasing one for their next vehicle.”

TESLA GIGAFACTORY 1 PRODUCTION INCREASE TRANSLATES TO 81% MORE POWERWALL DEPLOYMENTS

“Tesla’s energy business (Tesla Energy) often ends up playing second fiddle to the admittedly more exciting automotive business, but that doesn’t mean it’s not growing. In Q2, Tesla increased deployments of its 13.5 kWh Powerwall 81%, according to the Q2 2019 investor letter, to a record 415MWh.” reports CleanTechnica: “Tesla said in the letter that the sharp increase in Powerwall deployments means they have now been installed at more than 50,000 sites around the world. A Tesla spokesperson confirmed that Powerpack installations also increased in Q2 in parallel to the increase in Powerwall deployments. The update is some of the first tangible evidence we have that the company is getting better at balancing battery cell production at its Sparks, Nevada Gigafactory 1 with downstream demand in both its automotive and energy businesses.”

HYPERDRIVE OPENS NEW BATTERY MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN UK

“UK-based battery maker Hyperdrive Innovation has opened the doors to HYVE, a new battery manufacturing facility at the company’s Sunderland UK home base.” reports ChargedEVs: “Hyperdrive says the new facility will allow it to produce up to 30,000 battery packs annually. Since moving to Sunderland in 2014, the company has invested £7 million in its manufacturing capabilities. The Advanced Propulsion Centre, a public-private partnership between the UK government and car makers, played a major role in the early stages of Hyperdrive’s growth. The High Energy Density Battery Project (HEDB), a partnership with Nissan funded by a £9.7-million grant from APC, enabled Hyperdrive to bring its latest battery technology to market.”

FORMER AUDI CEO STADLER CHARGED OVER DIESELGATE SCANDAL

“Former Audi chief executive Rupert Stadler is among four people who have been charged by German prosecutors for their role in the Volkswagen Group Dieselgate emissions scandal.” writes James Atwood for Autocar: “The German public prosecutor’s office in Munich has charged Stadler and three other defendants with false certification and criminal advertising practices.  In a statement, the prosecutor said that Stadler “is accused of having been made aware of the manipulations since the end of September 2015, at the latest, but he did not prevent the sale of affected Audi and VW vehicles thereafter.”

Whilst the New York Times says: “Mr. Stadler and three others who were not named were accused of developing illegal emissions software used in cars sold under the Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche brands as part of a wider effort to cheat diesel emissions tests, Munich prosecutors said in a statement. The charges were the latest in Germany’s efforts to investigate and prosecute the architects of the scandal that has rocked the country’s automobile industry and laid bare the extent to which the companies tried to make diesel appear to be an environmentally friendly fuel option. The state court in Munich will now decide whether to bring the charges to trial.”

Wallbox’s new DC charger for the home operates at 7.4kW in both directions. It can pull down power into the car at a rate of 7.4kW or push power back up from the car’s battery at 7.4kW through its CHAdeMO adapter.”
