Show #540

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 26th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you so much to two new PATREON PRODUCERS! GUILLAUME SÉGUIN and CHRIS WILLIAMS!

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

MAJOR AUTOMAKERS STRIKE CLIMATE DEAL WITH CALIFORNIA

“Four automakers from three continents have struck a deal with California to produce more fuel-efficient cars for their U.S. fleets in coming years, undercutting one of the Trump administration’s most aggressive climate policy rollbacks.” says Washington Post today: “The compromise between the California Air Resources Board and Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and BMW of North America came after weeks of secret negotiations and could shape future U.S. vehicle production, even as White House officials aim to relax gas mileage standards for the nation’s cars, pickup trucks and SUVs. The deal comes as the Trump administration is working to finalize a huge regulatory rollback that would freeze mileage requirements for cars and light trucks next fall at about 37 miles per gallon on average, rather than raising them over time to roughly 51 mpg for 2025 models — the level that the industry and government agreed to during the Obama administration. The rule would also revoke California’s long-standing authority to set its own rules under the Clean Air Act, a practice the federal government has sanctioned for decades.”

The group said in a joint statement: “These terms will provide our companies much-needed regulatory certainty by allowing us to meet both federal and state requirements with a single national fleet, avoiding a patchwork of regulations while continuing to ensure meaningful greenhouse gas emissions reductions”

Why California? How big is it economically? From a May 2018 CBS report: “California now has the world’s 5th largest economy. California’s economy has surpassed that of the United Kingdom to become the world’s fifth largest, according to new federal data made public Friday. California’s gross domestic product rose by $127 billion from 2016 to 2017, surpassing $2.7 trillion, the data said.”

Do they like EV’s? You betcha! And from an April 2019 article on Markets Insider: “On April 15, the average price of regular gas in Los Angeles reached $4.069 a gallon. It was the first time in more than four years that prices in Los Angeles surpassed the $4 mark, according to the Los Angeles Times. California is the only state with an overall average gas price above $4, while only five other states with prices average more than $3. Hawaii has the next highest average at more than $3.60 a gallon, according to AAA.”

FIRST RIDE: 2020 ZERO SR/F

From Sabrina at RideApart.com: “Holy smokes is this bike fun to ride! It uses an amped-up electric motor called the Z-Force 75-10—currently the biggest the manufacturer has to offer—teamed up with a 14.4 kWh battery. This allows the SR/F to produce 110 horsepower, 140 lb-ft of torque, and reach a top speed of 124 mph. The acceleration is bonkers and doing it all in complete silence is the weirdest experience. Whether you’re taking off from a stop or accelerating on the highway, all the power is available instantly at a twist of the throttle and it’s mind-blowing. I knew it was to be expected, yet I’m still enthusing about it. That being said, because I tend to partly rely on the sound of the engine to make my presence known to other road users, zipping around in complete silence like a ninja can be a bit daunting. Keep in mind that you need to adapt to the fact that you’re now truly invisible. Not only do drivers not see you, now they also don’t hear you. This is something you need to be aware of.”

TESLA TO PRODUCE MORE THAN 100,000 CARS PER QUARTER FROM NOW ON

“The second quarter was a record one for Tesla, with 95,356 deliveries (158,356 in H1). There are signs that it was the last quarter below 100,000 though.

Currently, the Model 3 represents more than 80% of total Tesla car sales (part of the reason is a decrease in Model S/Tesla Model X sales).” says INsideEVs “Tesla sticks to its previous car sales guidance of 360,000 to 400,000 in 2019. To achieve the lower target of 360,000, more than 200,000 cars need to be sold in the following two quarters or over 100,000 per quarter.

According to Tesla, the Fremont production plant is already able to produce 7,000 Model 3 per week. By the end of 2019, the combined production output of 3/S/X will be 10,000 per week or about half a million per year. 500,000 cars are be produced between July 1, 2019 and June 31, 2020″

TESLA ADDS ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE INTEGRATION TO MOBILE APP

“Tesla is starting to roll out a new update that allows owners to request roadside assistance directly through the Tesla mobile app.” reports Electrek: “After launching the ability to make a service appointment from the app and launching a new live service status update feature through its mobile app, Tesla started taking away the ability for customers to call local service centers directly. Now Tesla is doubling down on service through its mobile app with the launch of roadside assistance directly through the Tesla mobile app. Some owners started seeing the feature appear in their mobile app. Previously, you would have to call Tesla’s roadside assitance line and talk to an agent about where you are and what the issue is, but since you can send Tesla your location through the app, you can just let them know your issue and the automaker can initiate the service.”

LG CHEM PLANS TO INVEST $424 MILLION FOR BATTERY MATERIAL PLANT IN SOUTH KOREA

“South Korean battery maker LG Chem Ltd said on Thursday it had agreed to invest 500 billion won ($424.03 million) to build a factory in South Korea to produce cathode material for lithium-ion batteries” according to Reuters: “LG Chem plans to break ground in the city of Gumi, in southeastern South Korea, next year, the company said in a statement. Cathode production will start from late 2022, said a company official. The company is one of the leading electric vehicle battery makers in the world and counts General Motors and Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) among its customers. Cathodes in lithium-ion batteries are made up of lithium metal as well as a combination of other metals such as nickel, cobalt and manganese. They absorb negatively charged electrons from the anode portion of the battery that produces energy. The anode portion of lithium-ion battery is typically graphite.”

MAGNA SIGNS ITS FIRST COMPLETE VEHICLE MANUFACTURING JV IN CHINA; EVS WITH BAIC

“Magna and the BAIC Group have signed a framework agreement governing their electric vehicle manufacturing joint venture (earlier post) in Zhenjiang, China, which marks another milestone of their continued cooperation.” so says Green Car Congress: “In June 2018, Magna and BJEV announced they would jointly engineer and build premium electric vehicles for customers in China. In January 2019, the two sides celebrated the opening of a new engineering center and announced the groundbreaking of a new NEV test center in Zhenjiang. The first production of electric vehicles, BJEV’s ARCFOX models, is expected for launch in late 2020. The joint venture will also be capable of offering EV contract manufacturing services to other potential customers.”

VOLKSWAGEN ID.R: RECORDS IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR, SIGHTS SET ON CHINESE CHALLENGE

The legendary hill climb on Pikes Peak, the famous Nürburgring-Nordschleife, and the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed. The fully-electric Volkswagen ID.R holds spectacular records at each of these prestigious motorsport venues. But that’s not all. The sports car will take on its next record attempt in September: The ID.R will set a target time on Tianmen Mountain in China. The goal for this extraordinary outing in the Far East is to set a milestone for electric cars and, in doing so, to support Volkswagen’s e-strategy in China, which is really picking up speed this year. By 2035, Volkswagen intends to increase the percentage of e-cars within its annual deliveries in China to 50 percent.

Tianmen Shan Big Gate Road in China is a spectacular mountain road, which climbs up the 1,519-metre Tianmen Mountain via 99 corners. For the moment, this is probably the most spectacular stretch of asphalt that the Volkswagen ID.R will set wheel on: Incredibly narrow, incredibly steep, and extremely winding – this road is a real challenge. Starting at 200 metres above sea level, it snakes its way along steep rock faces to a height of 1,300 metres and the so-called “Heaven’s Gate”. The ID.R will do pioneering work in September 2019 – never before has Tianmen Mountain hosted this kind of challenge.

TESLA AUTOPILOT’S STOP SIGN, TRAFFIC LIGHT RECOGNITION AND RESPONSE IS OPERATING IN ‘SHADOW MODE’

“Considering that traffic light and stop sign recognition and response is already operating in Shadow Mode, it will likely only be a matter of time before the features will start getting rolled out to members of the company’s early access program. Once these capabilities are refined, the electric car maker could take a definitive step towards attaining full self-driving, and in extension, launching the Tesla Network’s Robotaxi service.” says Simon at Teslarati: “Tesla is yet to introduce the full capabilities of its FSD suite to its fleet, though Musk has stated that he expects the system to be “feature complete” by the end of 2019. During the Q2 earnings call, Musk added that he expects Full Self-Driving to be offered to the international markets such as China as well, though Europe might be an exception due to specific regulations in the region.”

YOUR EV IS A MILKFLOAT, MATE

“Milk & More is expanding its fleet of electric vehicles to more than 500, with the addition of 159 new LDV EV80 models.” reports CommercialFleet.org: “Just like the classic electric milk floats, the new models will be used to provide silent and emissions-free morning milk deliveries. Last year, Milk & More invested £6.5 million in 200 new StreetScooter electric vehicles. The EV80 provides a 120-mile maximum range on a single charge and can be fully charged in less than 90 minutes. The LDV EV80 is produced by SAIC in China and distributed in the UK by Harris Group. A second electric model, the compact EV30, will join the LDV line-up next year.”

TESLA OWNER GETS HIS BUMPER DISMANTLED FOR ‘PARKING AT SUPERCHARGER WITHOUT CHARGING’

“A Tesla owner found his bumper disassembled from the body of his Model S and it is apparently for having parked the car at a Supercharger station without charging.” says Electrek: “Some Tesla owners have been known to park at a Supercharger station without plugging in, which is something that is not appreciated in the EV community, and there’s no way to incentivize them not to do it. In China, they apparently take it seriously. Jay in Shanghai, a Tesla owner who often updates us on EV news in China, posted an image of a Model S with a frunk opened and a front bumper disassembled at a Supercharger station”
