Show #538

Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 24th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

TESLA’S Q2 2019 EARNINGS PREVIEW

“Tesla’s second-quarter earnings report on Wednesday is poised to be a pivotal point for the electric car maker. Prior to Q2 2018, Tesla had failed to meet every Model 3 production forecast that it has announced. Q2 2018 already had an adjusted production target of producing 5,000 Model 3 per week, but the task had proven to be more difficult than expected.” says Teslarati: “The next two quarters following Q2 2018 will see Tesla’s challenges transition from what Elon Musk described as “production hell” to “delivery logistics hell.” Tesla set records in Q2 2019 by producing a total of 87,048 vehicles and delivering approximately 95,200, both in the United States and in other territories such as Europe and China. This quarter’s feat was a blow to the pervading bear thesis insisting that demand for the company’s vehicles is declining.”

SMART FORFOUR ELECTRIC DRIVE FACELIFT SPIED FOR THE FIRST TIME

“Smart will very soon become an EV-only automaker for all markets. The brand owned by Daimler will fill its entire lineup with electric vehicles and the first to come will be the facelifted version of the ForFour Electric Drive. The spy photo gallery [on Motor1] depicts the very first photos of the vehicle, taken somewhere in Germany.” writes Anthony Karr for Motor1.com: “The front fascia will be tweaked but the modifications will be small – expect to see a revised grille and a slightly reshaped bumper with different air openings.          the ForFour Electric Drive facelift should probably receive improvements to its all-electric powertrain. The current model offers a peak power of 82 horsepower (60 kilowatts) and a continuous output of 55 hp (41 kW). Thanks to a 17.6-kWh battery pack, the small four-seat vehicle can travel up to 93 miles (150 kilometers) on a single charge, depending on the drive cycle.”

FORD HIT WITH $1.2B LAWSUIT OVER MISREPORTED MPG RATINGS

“Ford has been slapped with a federal lawsuit over allegations that it misrepresented the fuel economy ratings on its 2018 and 2019 F-150 pickup trucks. The lawsuit claims that Ford installed a “mileage cheat device” that would display overly optimistic economy figures to owners as they drove, Automotive News reports.” according to Roadshow by CNET: “The misrepresentation likely stems from a 2017 change by the EPA in the way that emissions tests are administered.”

Audi’s new Q3 Sportback to offer 48V mild-hybrid system

Audi is adding the Q3 Sportback compact SUV in coupé shape to its model range. For the market launch in Europe, a gasoline and a diesel engine are available. Additional engines will follow in the course of the year, including a more powerful diesel and an entry-level gasoline engine, which works together with a 48 V mild-hybrid system. During deceleration, it recovers energy; during acceleration from low speeds, it supports the engine. In real-life driving, it can save up to 0.4 l of fuel per 100 km (62.1 mi).

SUBSIDY CUTS & TESLA MODEL 3 SHAKE UP CHINESE EV SALES RANKING

“After a slow May, with just 2% growth, June saw the Chinese plug-in vehicle market return to full charge, thanks to some 147,000 registrations, up 72% year over year (YoY).” says Jose Pontes for Clean Technica: “Fully electric vehicles (BEVs) grew faster than that, at +97%, and because the mainstream market is falling (-8%), June’s plug-in vehicle (PEV) share reached a record 8.5%, pulling the PEV market share to 6.3%, well above the 2018 result (4.2%) and on target to reach my forecast of 8% for 2019. But, starting on June 26, “new energy vehicle” (NEV) subsidies were cut off completely for vehicles with fewer than 250 kilometers of electric range, while those with higher range saw their subsidies halved. “

Here a closer look at June’s top 5 best selling models: #1 – BAIC EU-Series, #2 – Changan Eado EV, #3 – BYD Yuan EV (58 kWh battery, 410 km / 255 mi NEDC range, 163 hp motor), #4 – Tesla Model 3 and #5 – Chery eQ.

NIO ES6 – Approximately a year (and over 15,000 units) after the landing of the trailblazing ES8 full-size SUV, Nio has launched its “Model Y,” the ES6. With two battery sizes (70 kWh and 84 kWh), the midsize SUV is rated at 410/510 km NEDC range, respectively, so we can imagine 300/400 kms (180 / 240 miles) real-world range, which is a bit on the low side.

Top Gear website has the lowdown on how the NIO battery swapping works: “Though manned 24-hours a day, the process is entirely automated. Once the Nio man has manoeuvred your car into place, he goes into a little room and prods some buttons. Your car is then shuffled into place and lifted into the air. Its battery is unscrewed and a new, fully-charged one fitted. The whole process takes less than ten minutes and costs the equivalent of around £20. Each station contains five batteries at any one time, and can service 70 cars a day.”

TESLA IS RUMORED TO BE WORKING ON A BATTERY FACTORY IN INDONESIA

“Tesla is rumored to be working on some sort of battery factory in Indonesia, according to comments made by a local official.” reports Electrek: “Local news in Indonesia is reporting that the country’s Maritime Affairs Coordinating Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan is stating that Tesla is amongst several companies looking to build battery manufacturing facilities in Indonesia’s Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) in Central Sulawesi. CATL, the largest battery manufacturer for electric vehicles in China, is apparently in the most advanced stages of the project, but LG and Tesla are also involved, according to the official.”

PM2.5 POLLUTION IN THE USA IS STILL COSTING THOUSANDS OF LIVES

“Even though levels of PM2.5 are lower in the USA than national ambient air quality standards, pollution is still costing thousands of lives, a study has suggested.” according to Air Quality News: “The study was published in the journal PLOS Medicine and analysed publicly available data to directly estimate the number of deaths, by age group and sex, and loss of life expectancy due to current PM2.5 levels across the USA, as well as the benefits of reductions since 1999. researchers found that PM2.5 pollution in excess of the lowest observed concentration (2.8 μg/m3) was responsible for an estimated 30,000 deaths. The life expectancy loss due to PM2.5 was largest around Los Angeles and in some southern states, such as Arkansas, Oklahoma and Alabama.”

Particulate matter (PM) is a term used to describe the mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets in the air. Within UK towns and cities, emissions of PM2.5 from road vehicles are an important source. Consequently, levels of PM2.5 (and population exposure) close to roadsides are often much higher than those in background locations. xposure to high concentrations of PM (e.g. during short-term pollution episodes) can also exacerbate lung and heart conditions, significantly affecting quality of life, and increase deaths and hospital admissions. Children, the elderly and those with predisposed respiratory and cardiovascular disease, are known to be more susceptible to the health impacts from air pollution.
