Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 27th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today, and picked out the best ones to save you time.
Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.
Welcome, and thank you, to a new member of the Patreon gang. It’s FRANK ASADA who joins as a new PRODUCER of the show.
POLESTAR
We’ll kick off with the official blurb from Volvo/Polestar: “Polestar 2 is the first electric car to compete in the marketplace around the Tesla Model 3, with the range starting at a guide price of 39,900 euros. For the first 12 months of production, guide price of the launch edition is 59,900 euros1. Polestar 2 is a premium five-door fastback with two electric motors and a 78 kWh battery capacity2 that will enable a targeted range of 500 km3, based on Volvo Car Group’s adaptable Compact Modular Architecture platform (CMA). The 27-module battery pack is integrated into the floor and contributes to the rigidity of the chassis as well as improves the car’s noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) levels – road noise has been reduced by 3.7 dB compared to a traditional chassis. Polestar is setting up strategic collaborations to give Polestar 2 owners easy and hassle-free access to the world’s largest public charging networks. The all-wheel drive electric powertrain in Polestar 2 produces 300 kW (408 hp) and 660 Nm (487 lb-ft). This translates to a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of less than 5 seconds. Polestar 2 is one of the first cars in the world to embed an infotainment system powered by Android. The Android backbone provides a solid and adaptable digital environment for apps and vehicle functions to coexist, and brings embedded Google services to a car for the first time – including the Google Assistant, Google Maps with support for electric vehicles and the Google Play Store5 In common with all Polestar cars, Polestar 2 will only be available for ordering online. The guide purchase price for the launch version of Polestar 2 is 59,900 euros1 with subscription pricing to follow at a later date. Pre-orders are open at polestar.com. Production of Polestar 2 begins in early 2020 in China for global markets in both left- and right-hand drive. Initial launch markets include China, the United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK. Other markets are under consideration for future expansion.”
Domenick at InsideEVs says: “The Polestar 2 is, arguably, the first real offering from the new Volvo electric sub-brand. Yes, there is a Polestar 1, but limited to 500 very expensive (base price $155,000) examples in its first production year and being a performance plug-in hybrid, it’s an hor d’oeuvre to the 2’s main course. Tesla famously sells its products over the internet and through small company-owned boutique shops. Polestar will be taking a similar approach, though they will be sticking with the dealership franchise model. The stores will not carry a ton of inventory and be staffed by non-commissioned personnel. As well, the brand will put plenty of info online to help inform customers. One difference, though, is that Polestar will also offer cars as a subscription service, meaning you pay a flat rate every month and all incidental expenses (save for electricity) are covered.”
On the InsideEVsForum: Winter bear says: I have a model 3 and hope Volvo hits it out of the park with the P2. More competition with ICE and within BEV is awesome.
Simon at Teslarati says: “Overall, the Polestar 2 appears to be an impressive vehicle. While its estimated production that’s “north of 50,000″ units per year represents just a fraction of Tesla’s Model 3 output, the vehicle does provide a great balance between price and features to make it a compelling purchase. In a way, the Polestar 2 could even be dubbed as a threat to premium gasoline-powered cars, considering that it offers the best of traditional auto in an uncompromisingly electric package. he Polestar 2’s $45,000 base variant, for one, can be an alternative to the Mid Range Model 3, which currently costs $42,900 before incentives. The Polestar 2’s $63,000 Launch Edition, on the other hand, could prove itself as an alternative to Tesla’s Model 3 Performance, which currently costs $60,900 before incentives.”
