Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Friday 15th February 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I can find today, and picked out the ones I think you need to know about.

Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.

2020 KIA SOUL EV EARNS 243-MILE EPA RANGE RATING

  • “Kia is diving head first into the world of electric cars, and now we know how far its new Soul EV can go on a full charge: 243 miles, according to its EPA rating. This officially makes it the longest-range EV in Kia’s lineup, because the Niro EV is rated for 239 miles. The Hyundai Kona bests them all with a 258-mile range, though.” according to Autoblog today: “A 64 kWh battery pack provides juice for an electric motor producing 201 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque. DC fast charging is standard and you can adjust the brake regeneration power via paddles behind the steering wheel. Anyone looking at an EV from Kia or Hyundai is going to have to make a choice when it comes to bodystyle, because they won’t lose or gain much on the powertrain and efficiency side of things. A 243-mile range is more than sufficient to compete in the electric vehicle world right now, especially if you can get that range on the quirky but lovable Soul. The Bolt EV is sitting at 238 miles of range, and the new Nissan Leaf E+ can go 226 miles before fully depleting its battery.”

MERCEDES-BENZ EQC IS REPORTEDLY ALREADY SOLD OUT FOR ITS FIRST YEAR

  • “The 2020 Mercedes-Benz EQC isn’t in drivers’ hands just yet, but the automaker says its new electric car is already sold out for its first year of production. On top of that, Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars Dieter Zetsche told a German newspaper there’s doubt as to whether production could even meet demand next year. Mercedes has not announced planned production figures for the model.” reports Roadshow by CNET: “Although we’re still waiting for exact range figures and pricing for the 2020 Mercedes EQC, the electric vehicle is set to debut in the US in 2020. The car packs two electric motors, with total output rated for 402 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque, and will use an 80-kilowatt-hour battery pack. In an early test of the car, Roadshow’s Steven Ewing was able to drive an EQC an indicated 228 miles with about 7 percent battery charge remaining, which signals the car should offer a solid driving range.”

  • “We are sure that we will not be able to meet the demand in 2019 and probably not by 2020,” Zetsche told Die Welt. “But we’re doing everything we can to achieve the maximum capacity.”

AUDI E-TRON RESERVATIONS SOAR TO 20,000: DELIVERIES DELAYED AGAIN

  • “The German manufacturer said that the customer deliveries in Europe will start in March, which is another delay from previously announced February, and already several months behind the original schedule. In the U.S., first e-trons are expected in the second quarter.” says Mark Kane for InsideEVs.com: “Despite the delay, Audi has good news that more than 20,000 reservations were placed globally, which is two times more than the official number in September 2018. “The first deliveries to European customers will start in March; more than 20,000 customers worldwide have already made advance reservations for the model.” As of the end of January, in Germany alone, the number of Audi e-tron registered exceeds 1,000, which gives hopes that when deliveries will finally begin, it will be substantial.”

DOES AUDI E-TRON REALLY ONLY USE 83 OUT OF ITS 95-KWH BATTERY PACK?

  • Car And Driver asks:” What gives? For one, Audi uses just 81.0 kWh of the e-tron’s 95.0-kWh capacity. Every automaker leaves a buffer to protect the longevity of the pack, but Audi appears characteristically conservative here.”
  • George Bower at InsideEVs says: “In Bjørn Nyland’s video, he calculates the amount of energy available at only 82.5 kWh’s. Maybe the battery was cold? We don’t know as we don’t have battery temps displayed during his test, but the outside temps were just below the freezing mark. On the other hand, we would assume that Audi would heat the battery so maybe battery temp doesn’t explain it.”

TESLA SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT AUDI, NOT JAGUAR, ANALYST SAYS

  • “Test-driving Jaguar’s new i-PACE electric car showed that it is a “credible first effort” but a “poorly executed infotainment system and a dealership network that may not be able to position and sell the car effectively” will keep it from having an impact on Tesla (ticker: TSLA) sales, JMP analyst Joseph Osha said in a note to clients Wednesday. After driving the i-PACE and Audi’s EV, Osha writes that the latter is a much more worrying competitor to Tesla. “The i-PACE we drove was elegantly appointed,” he writes. “It had the excellent fit and finish that Jaguars usually do, and Teslas sometimes do not. The interior and controls are laid out in a traditional configuration, which may be attractive to some buyers not ready to embrace Tesla’s display-based driver interface.” It also has a listed-range of 234 miles, less than the Model 3’s 310 miles and the X’s 270.”

CLASSIC MINI GETS FULL ELECTRIC CONVERSION BY SWIND

  • “The fashion for producing electric powered versions of classic cars shows no signs of slowing down, with Swind revealing its zero emissions take on the original Mini, replacing its combustion drivetrain with a modern-day electric one. It follows hot on the heels of Jaguar Land Rover Classic’s converted E-Types and Aston Martin’s electric DB6 Volante.” says Sam Jenkins for EVO: “Due to the nature of electric motors, torque is available immediately, likely making the model feel rather nippy with a 9.2sec 0-62mph time proving far quicker than the Fifties original. Power comes in at 80Kw, equivalent to around 110bhp, providing a top speed of 80mph. Although range is usually an issue for electric cars, the E Classic Mini has a very respectable range of 125 miles – plenty enough for its intended use in the city.”

COMMUNITY

And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Keep your comments coming in on email and YouTube…

Are you part of a EV club or association online or physically? Do you think there’s more reason for electric car owners to be part of community compared to gas cars? Or not at all?
